Selling Fellaini was a mistake

Buying him was the first mistake. Selling him in January was the second mistake. Fellaini has his uses when most other options don't work otherwise he would not be playing for Belgium.
I agree with others who say we should have kept him till summer, then get a replacement and sold him.
Fellaini in midfield was a disaster. Push him up into the opposite box and put high balls in and he creates problems for the opponent.
He may not score but in these situations he creates opportunities for other players.
There is absolutely no evidence to suggest selling him in January was a mistake. He wouldn’t of helped against PSG or Liverpool due to lack of mobility so selling and playing Perreira was absolutely correct decision

That's the thing though, he wasn't a "great" plan B. Hoofing the ball to him barely ever worked.

The whole "Plan B" thing always irked me. We have a squad that includes the likes of Lukaku, Martial, Lingard, Mata; a couple of which would generally be on the bench.

If Rashford is having a stinker then trying to play the same kind of football that you are trained to play 5 days a week, but with a different player like Martial Is the obvious solution.

If that Plan B doesn't work then you move on to Plan C which might be bringing on a more attacking midfielder for a more defensive one (say Fred for Matic), again playing the same game you train to play 5 days a week. The same is true of a Plan D.

We saw against Southampton and throughout Fergie's reign that actually trusting the tactics that you've trained for but changing personnel is far more likely to bring success than throwing on a big lump and trying a tactic that hasn't been worked on.

Plus even as a final Plan Z throw of the dice in injury time... Would throwing Smalling up front really be much less effective and would the difference in effectiveness really be worth a space on the bench at the expense of a talented youngster plus £5m a year in salary? Likewise as we saw with Fellaini coming on against Everton, this roll of the dice is just as likely to cost you points than gain you points.

Selling him was absolutely the right decision. His lack of mobility makes it very difficult to play the style Ole wants and whether the club kept him or not, playing McTominay, Pereira and Fred ahead of him was the right decision.

Ole's trust in the academy players is exactly what the club needs and both McTominay and Pereira have rewarded that faith with good performances over the last few weeks.

It's much braver than picking an experienced international who is the wrong fit for the club but it is absolutely the correct long term policy. Ole deserves massive credit for that.

100% this.

Throwing on the big man and going long is for shite teams against other shite teams, ands that one of the reasons why he got the chance to stick around and stink the place out for so long, is that the last three managers treated us like a shite team.

Moyes- Cleared out the coaching staff, alienated all the players because he thought they were not good enough and it was everyone elses fault but his he couldnt win a fecking raffle let alone a football match.

LVG- we needed a "philosphy" all the players needed binning, we needed to adapt to modern football and play boring possession based shite, resorting to lumping it up to the big man when that didnt work.

Maureen- All the players are shite, none of this is my fault, resorts to lumping it up to the big man to get results.

Ole- feck this shite, lets get at them and play some football, bin off shite like Fellaini = record breaking away wins, best start to any United or Premier league manager ever, great football, youth given a chance, great atmosphere.

But no, we need a clogger like Fellaini still because people dont like being proven wrong.

We scored a last minute winner yesterday without Marouane Fellaini. Just like we did for years under Ferguson.

This thread is a fecking blight.

im also still wondering how we came back without the tree. What a stupid thread.

So would I mate, but adding another experienced midfielder who could slot in when injuries occur would have been nice. I just hope that it doesn't do us harm. 10 games to go and we have to win the Majority of these games to get that Champions League spot without 2 of our best midfielders for 3/4 of these games.

I mean really what seasoned midfielder would be bought that could make a difference that our already deep set of midfielders(have to remember we have players that have also played these positions sitting farther back and on the bench), and ride the bench and be happy about it? While also stifling experience for the fringe midfield players and some youngsters coming up? What says this seasoned midfielder comes in and makes good considering hes new and has to slot into a top 4 race? just makes no sense anywhere unless you are on football manager.

This whole thread is laughable. People slate sanchez and then praise fellaini?

Maybe we should look at why Sanchez was so good for arsenal and only recently have seen small glimpses of that guy? Its because he has more movement around him, when at arsenal he had 7 people moving around him at all times it would seem(thats for the sanchez thread and for people that can not actually analyze players performances). We are no longer hoofing the ball and I for one will take a loss here and there because we don't have that option than ever hoping for that option again. We have plenty of heads in the box that can get to them that also does not leave us exposed. Good riddance.

Everyone can see that we need an experienced player in Midfield, when without Matic and Herrera. We cannot put the burden on young players shoulders without an experienced player alongside them to guide them through.

As for Sanchez, It's time for him to go. He has got his chances, and now that we are playing good attacking football he gets plenty of the ball but loses it most times, stopping or slowing down our play.

How many times will this thread need to proven to be totally wrong before it’s locked?

And they haven't won anything have they. Probably the biggest wasted 'golden' generation since the English. Fellaini is just not good enough for a club of our ambition.

There's probably one last Tournament in the golden generation, but if you want to blame Fellaini for their failure to win anything so far its a bit harsh.

He's so good that he ended up in China.

It's hardly America now is it ? It's not somewhere players go to earn a few bob before hanging up their boots.

Yes, he is shite for them as well.

Take it you didn't watch the World Cup then, Neymar says Hi

I liked Fellaini and always said he is a useful squad player. But selling him and giving McTominay and Pereira was the right thing to do.

When you consider Pereira got a goal an assist (should have had 2 assists with Lukakus missed header in 1st half) this thread is just... bizarre.

Made even worse as when we do eventually drop points it'll get bumped by those and they'll do the old "told you so" bullshit despite ignoring the fact that we've won 13 of 16 games. Thirteen of sixteen games for fecks sake!

But what we really need is Fellaini picking up the ball in midfield and running the ball out for an opposition throw in. :wenger:

Anyone that misses him needs their heads checked. As I said, signing him was the mistake. Letting him go years ago was the correct decision but unfortunately he ended up staying here far beyond his welcome.

On the contrary, it'll more likely get bumped every time United get a late winner without Fellaini by the trendy haters, most who wouldn't recognise a decent footballer if they fell over one.

To be fair mate you were the first person to bump this thread after Lukaku's later winner yesterday ;)

Definitely mate the Fellaini plan B was never nearly as effective as some like to make out. Even last season when Fellaini wasn't available we had great comebacks against Palace and City away because Mourinho was forced to go more attacking like you just described and it worked a treat. Bringing on more attackers for defenders, pushing Pogba further forward and putting Lignard to RB etc. etc.

Sadly once Fellaini was fit again he reverted to type because even when losing it seems Jose didn't like throwing caution to the wind and going all out attack.

Plus even as a final Plan Z throw of the dice in injury time... Would throwing Smalling up front really be much less effective and would the difference in effectiveness really be worth a space on the bench at the expense of a talented youngster plus £5m a year in salary? Honestly for someone to throw up there for 5-10 minutes to lob the ball to i think that might have been a better option. Not only has Smalling a good scoring record for a CB (he didn't score much less than Fellaini in their time playing together). But also the fact that when Van Gaal and especially Mourinho used Felllaini in that role it was rarely ever at the expense of a defender. With moving a CB up top to play long to you end up with an extra attacker and one less defender.

If you, before the game's even started, are already planning your plan B (putting Fellaini on the bench), then you've already demonstrated a mindset that isn't what this club stands for. That to me suggest that you don't think your team can go out there and beat what's in front of them so you plan for your last resort. I'd much rather have a manager like Ole that wants to play his way and instills confidence in the players in the starting XI that they're good enough to win every game.

I'd much rather that his spot on the bench goes to Chong and the likes so that we, in case we're leading 3-0 with 20 minutes to go, can give the youngsters a chance every now and then.

Fellaini should never have been a Man Utd player. The closest he would have come to the best midfields at United would have been as a water carrier. Even with Scholes and Carrick on their last days at Man Utd players he would not have gotten close to the team. OGS knew that and got rid of him and there did not seem to be much interest in this incredible plan B player some make him out to be as he buggerd of to China. Now we are on the right track, playing proper football and just give the long term job to OGS now.

Fellaini was never a proper fit for United, not even close. This “Plan B” of a footballer made our Plan A much worse. Best wishes to him in China, but good riddance.

This thread is basically to remind us over and over again he 'epitomized everything what was wrong with United' and similar rabble. Although of course it wasnt created with that intention.

Take it you didn't watch the World Cup then, Neymar says Hi

Still wrong, stop embarrassing yourself.

A bigger crime is the absolute lack of ambition to even try to sign a player or two for squad padding in January, when it was clear Ole would launch a challenge for 4th spot and the season wasn't a write-off. Yes, it's difficult, but Chelsea tried and got Higuain, so it's not impossible.

And offering the likes of Mata an extension.

I'm keeping my criticism reeled in until the summer to see if we continue a tightwad policy. RW, CB, FBs and midfield all need reinforcements.
This is old but why should we sign players in January just to fill the squad. Much rather those chances went to a youth team player than buying some player. If we're gonna buy it should be a prospect or a genuninely class player.

Plenty of times with crosses as well. You don't need a giant in the box if you have movement and a good cross.

Eg our equalizer V Burnley was a good cross that 5F7 Sanchez got on the end off and Lindelof scores from the rebound.

There are several things that can be classified as a mistake, United selling Fellaini isn't on that list.

This thread on the other hand... :smirk:

yes exactly. Rashford and Lukaku both wasted good header chances yesterday.

No Mistake, was a panic buy with Moyes and was used by LVG and Mourinho to justify their over inflated ego's pretending to see qualities that just did not exist when
everyone else thought he was shit. Its unbelievable to think he was able to hold the club to ransom in the summer for an improved deal.

If we're missing him that much we can always just buy a palm tree and play it in midfield occasionally. You'd just need to get one of the other players to randomly move it to the right wing after 10 minutes.

I mean I didn't hate him but how can a team trying to be the best in the world be playing fellaini 30+ times a season?

Half of our team is injured and still people will not admit they are wrong. He should have been sold in the summer, simple as.

That was possibly the most galling thing of his whole sorry time here, apart from being signed in the first place.

Is that this club alowwed themselves to be had over a barrell by him, it was absolutely disgusting.
