Come on mate, its not that easy. Otherwise our scouts would all be ex players and we would never have problems with recruitment.
Of course even the best make mistakes. But an ex pro who played at a very high level for the club holds more sway when it comes to judging player ability/potential compared to the experts on here.

Can someone point out where I'm going wrong?
Now, why is Newcastle ripping us off? Forget the number of games Longstaff played. He has potential. Wouldn't 50 for him be a better deal than 50 for Fred?

Just because you have eaten a shit sandwich once doesn't mean you should always eat shit sandwiches!

I fear however we are acquiring a taste for them

Yeah, but one shit sandwich will probably retire as a shit sandwich.
The other might be transformed into a delicious, golden brown ham and cheese sandwich.

So you're saying that because Sir Alex messed up with Moyes we should now question Carrick who actually performed on the pitch as a #6.

I'm saying its silly to think that he definitely knows what hes doing suggesting players just because he played a position. Plenty of players and managers have made bad choices

And doesnt make sense to rate him picking a DM over Sir Alex, who actually signed Carrick in the first place

I like us targeting young talent but it's the lack of activity concerning the first team which is an issue.

  1. Longstaff played remarkably well for a handful of games.
  2. It looks as if he's only going to get better.
  3. Newcastle, who doesn't need to sell, values him at £50m.
  4. After the upcoming season he will probably be worth more than £50m (likely improvement and inflation).
  5. Newcastle is ripping us off.

Remarkably well? No.

Well? yes. Put it this way, Jordan Henderson looked a bigger talent.

All young players look like they're going to get better. Some do, others get worse

Newcastle dont value him at £50 million, they just dont want to sell him to us for a reasonable fee

After the upcoming season you have no idea what he'll be worth

Maybe he did to you, he sure as hell didn't to me.

Assuming you’re of a certain age had you heard of the likes of Ronaldo, Kanchelskis, Solskjaer, maybe even Cantona, before they signed for us ?

Fair point. Whilst not a fan fav, we signed Smalling and he hadn't played that many games for Fulham. Cole came from Newcastle, Yorke from Villa, Keane from Forrest, Dennis from Oldham(?) Stam and Rudd where from very average Dutch teams and the list goes on.....

This is the tax we pay for being arguably the biggest club in the world. Arsenal would sign him for twenty million. But we are expected to pay more. Maximum i would go to is about 30 million.

Cole scored about 40 in his breakthrough season. Yorke probably averaged 20 a season over 2, and Keane had already been sent off several times before they were brought in.

Im a Utd fan and I then when we bought them. Neither Cole or Yorke had only played 9 times first team football either or were in their teens when we signed them. Clearly therefore not comparing them just players are out there from lower or unfashionable teams that are capable of making the step up.

Dont understand why Fred is mentioned here, he was a Brazilian international who had also played in the Champions League, Longstaff has played 9 first team games, big difference.

Utter rubbish that Carrick never performed at a world class level.

So should we take opinions of posters on Redcafe over a former player like Carrick who actually played the #6 role to a world class level?
So when was he world class? Which seasons was he standout? Did he have Prem seasons when he was consistently one of the best players in the league? Was he regularly one of the best performers at champions league level? What about international? Tell me what period he was playing at a world class level. I get the people have watered down the term world class now. When was Carrick ever reached the performances of a Pirlo who actually performed world class?

No, both do not deserve 50 m.

Exactly. Some people talk some amount of arse

If Barca came in for Greenwood what price do you think we’d put on him? Just asking as I think it’s relevant. The game has gone mad.

It's not just Carrick that will have had a input on Longstaff though. I'm pretty sure the likes of Marcel Bout and Jim Lawlor would've seen him play too and would've submitted a report on the player.

They could of course be wrong in their assessment and he could turn out to be a flop. But we've had established players who did wonders at their previous clubs who turned into duds when they arrived at United. I'm willing to back this approach of signing young players with high potential which is something i've always favoured.

And if Longstaff does live up to his potential, then him being English is a big bonus IMO. I say that due to our lads having more of a affiliation to the club than say if we signed someone from Spain who will look to jump ship as soon one of the big two from Spain comes calling. English, Welsh, Irish and Scottish players would see United as the holy grail.

Who cares how many games he's played if Ole and his staff think he's good enough. Pretty much everyone here hasn't seen the guy play and doesn't know what he's worth. So perhaps people should show a bit of humility and stop trying to pretend they know everything?

Happy to wait and see. From the youtube clips and reports I see no reason to be unhappy should we sign him. Good engine, two footed, great shot and a steely character. We badly need a midfielder. So if Ole thinks he's the one I'm happy to let the club decide how much they are willing to pay.

Perhaps create another thread to continue this crap discussion.

Why not sign Jonjo Shelvey? He has all of this. Does Ole have a good track record signing players in the EPL? He is definitely open to suspicion as he only has Cardiff on his resume and that was a shambles. He has been managing for 10 years so there is no sense of infallibility

You’ve got to be kidding me haven’t you? Your a united fan and your asking those questions? There was a strange group questioning how good he was in the early years but I thought by the last few years of his career everyone got a grip on just how good he was. If you still don’t get it our recent demise maybe spells it out for you

I'm happy for Ole and his staff to sign the players they want to sign. I'm not aware of a bit for Shelvey so it's a stupid comparison.

You mention Pirlo who had a miserable time at Milan until he joined Juve.

Carrick was world class between 2006 - 2009. His performance against Roma within that time period was excellent and a particular stand out. Which season was he bad in? He did his job to a high standard consistently for a long period of time. Many ex United players who played with him considered him world class as a #6.

What about international level? I guess Scholes wasn't world class either by that metric.

People always get hyped up in retirement. So tell me when he was one of the best midfielders in Europe? During what period? To me he never came close to the Xavi Pirlo etc and it showed at the top level as they shone and he bowed to Scholes authority which a world class player doesn't do. Our demise down to Carrick? Really? The last time we won the league Scholes came out of retirement to help out. When he was gone and Carrick still played we stayed 6th. Our demise is down to multiple factors, not least losing the boss and multiple WC players and leaving Carrick surrounded by a bunch of mid table guys. I felt sorry for Michael at the time.

Maybe because the club don't want Shelvey?

He openly admitted he gave the ball to Scholes because he was better and was accused by United fans of hiding and not doing enough at that period. A classic tale of re writing history. Pirlo shone in a world cup CL 2005 and 2007. What were Carricks great tournaments? Roma game isn't enough mate. Our team were like Liverpool's today. Functional midfield, world class attack and world class defence but Barca exposed the gap between having actual world class midfielders and just good ones. Milan did too in a way

This guy can pass the ball, i can understand why he is compared to Carrick:

With his potential in this market the price will be high.

He really can spray it around with both feet can't he. But he hasn't played enough games so I guess he's not good enough

You're mentioning some of the greatest CM's in the history of the game to down play Cartick which says it all. Xavi, Iniesta and Scholes were better than Carrick for sure. But that doesn't mean Carrick wasn't a world class performer. He played at a high level and won the European Cup and multiple league titles with United over a period of time and his peers even consider him as a world class player as a #6.

At international level he was wasted by England who just didn't play with a regista type unlike the Italians who knew exactly how to utilise such players hence Pirlo benefiting.
