There were reports about it being a 25m transfer when it first surfaced.. nothing for a couple of weeks..

Then there were reports about us preparing a 15-20m bid..

I'm guessing both came from our side.. basically valuing him at 25m. Starting the bid at 15-20 and go up.

Newcastle will start off from 50 and come down.

The fact is, if we dont think he is worth paying more than 25m, it wont happen.

Another thing..
If we knew we wanted him, then why the absurd delay...
Should have offered them 20m a month back before the media cycles ..

So you're confirming your response to the poster had nothing to do with what he said. Thanks. That's not how it works, but OK. Woodward decides what we pay for players, not the manager, no matter how much you warp it.

Feel free to check my previous posts, I supported him on some things but ultimately wanted him gone. He seems to still be ruining your life

I commented on his comment. Sorry it didn’t match up to your response thread criteria. But like I said you could have just not responded after i made it obvious i wasnt referring to Longstaff’s allegid fee.

As for Woodward, like i said. Mourinho sanctioned the deal and after he got here he decided it was just another toy he had no care in playing with. A quite exspensive one at that.

Mourinho’s ruining my life?. Have you had your coffee yet?

My criteria? I believe you were the one who became persnickety about my grasp on the ‘conversation,’ though I’m not sure how you making one unrequited reply about a topic you now admit had nothing to do with what you were responding to, constitutes a conversation.

Jose doesn’t ‘sanction’ any deal. Like most managers, he works with his scouting team to create a list of targets and their priority, and then it’s up to Woodward and Judge to negotiate a fee. The fact you’re bringing this up in a response that made no mention of Jose, in a thread about a Newcastle player 6 months after Jose left the club, suggests you’ve still got some issues to work out. My advice is to move on. Maybe you can start to blame the postman for pushing up your broadband bills or something.

£5Om for someone who has played 9 EPL games is crazy. Personally it seems like quite a gamble. Can't judge him as I've never seen him play but this is madness, although he could come here and play immense and they £50m if true if we pay it may turn our to be a bargain.

Thing is though he’s made over 70 senior appearances and scored 14 goals. Plus yet again as everyone is constantly repeating the 50 million fee, United value him below 30 million.

If you look at Newcastles results with and without him last season you will understand the valuation.

We wont be paying 50m for Longstaff

and people wonder why there's been so few deals in the PL in general so far. Clubs simply don't need the money these days and will just quote ridiculous fees as a result ... then you add the United tax and clubs will just take the piss like that. I would have liked Longstaff at United a lot, but if that's their valuation we might as well move on.

Hope The Sun is right and that we've been put of by the supposed £50m tag. that's stupid money for someone totally unproven (in my mind: the fee and the unproven). now if someone wants to pay us £40m for the "brilliant and totally underrated" pairing of Jones and Smalling, I'll reconsider

To ask 50mil for Longstaff is a mockery. Besides, like there aren't midfielders outside of PL and they wouldn't cost us arm, leg and kidney. And stop with that british core nonsense, it is too damn expensive. Buy british players for the younger categories and groom them to become a first squad players some day. Untill then turn your attention to Bundes League, Spain and Serie A to buy players.

We are run by amateurs. We had been briefing for a month that we were confident of a £25m deal. Why make your interest public in the first place?

So they want the same fee SPurs paid for Ndombele? imagine is he had played 20 league games and had an even better youtube compilation..... they'd be asking for 100mill

- Man Utd feel that the price should reflect the fact he is not «proven» and the risk related,

- NUFC feel that the price should reflect his potential,

Both clubs agree that his potential is high.

If he ends up not being good enough, Man Utd would probably be able to sell him for £20-25 mill regardless (unless we pay stupid money in wages) in a few years. (Mings just went for something similar).

Consequently, if we really believe in him, I can see us paying £20-25 mill with a similar amount in add-ons relating to performances (number of starts for us each year, England caps etc). I mean, if he end up becoming a regular for England, we would probably be happy to pay £50 mill for him. If we do, the media will obviously report it as «a deal at least worth £50 mill».

Playing for Man United Cole with a 10 cap minimum England call up anyway. So wouldn’t want that.

Good point. The issue I guess is that they want more money upfront? I don’t think we’ll have any problems just tagging on add ons dependant on success.

Would you even sell Greenwood for 35m? He only played 118 minutes with the first team last season.
Greenwood is 18 years old, Longstaff is 22. If Greenwood only managed to play 9 games a season for us four years later then yes, 35m please.

Yep, it's not an accurate comparison. I saw tweets defending the price by bringing up Hudson Odoi too. Another awful comparison as he is a wonderkid. Longstaff is 21.

There's no way Ruben goes for 40m and neither can you get a top class international midfielder for 50m either. Look at what City payed for Rodri and he's only just had his breakout season.

Not saying Longstaff is worth 50m, his fee should be atleast half that.
Bernardo Silva went for 43 mill the other day. Rodri had his release clause activated. Rodri has 3 seasons in La Liga under his belt, and has played for Spains 1st team since 2018.

He has. I just think maybe people are ignoring the fact his experience is mostly gained in League one and Scottish EPL which is similar standard. I have mates who play in league one, and Bradley Deck was player of the year in 2018 so maybe we should be in for him.

Just furthers my point that you can't get an established international midfielder for 50m in the current market.

To make the fans excited about signings, so that Ed can get out by saying fee was too much..

It makes him look like he is targeting players.

Yep, repeatedly not making signings fans are excited by is a sure-fire way to keep fans happy. I can sense the joy engulfing the caf even now.

It's reported that Michael Carrick has recommended Longstaff to Ole. I think he might know a thing or two about the potential of the player if he wants United to sign him.

I think Newcastle are certain to go down come the end of the season. The fans will be on there backs straight away once Brucey starts playing horrible football. Mike Ashley will be getting abuse from the off as he always does so the atmosphere will be toxic.

Longstaff for £50m is a joke and with interest from us, he will absolutely be wanting the move and hopefully a sensible fee can be agreed as he won't want to be around that place this season

Tend to agree. The loss of Rafa will be felt and the best scenario for the fans is the team being somehow sold before relegation is certain. The valuation seems like a money grab before the shit hits the fan and Ashley has to drop his pants to sell before the drop.

Considering the comparative values of other midfielders this window, we shouldn't go above 30, unless you have a few big performance targets (i.e. consecutive CL seasons, multiple trophies, tied to % of appearances, etc)

If we really want him, Newcastle will sell. This is pure profit for Ashley. He will try as he should to get as much money as he can for any player.30 million for a player with limited 1st team experience is more than enough, he'll bite.

Does Carrick have some proven expertise in identifying and developing talent? I don't know so maybe you can fill me in....

50 million is way over the top for unproven player. Ndombele is a top player and only cost 62million. Ridiculous.

Carrick has played the #6 position to a world class level and knows what is required to play in such a role. That makes him a expert on identifying a player of a similar profile in my book.

Carrick obviously has contacts in that neck of the woods so must know something but I’d be concerned if our scouting network was reduced to ex players making recommendations aka giggs and James and now this
