Scott McTominay (Out) - Newcastle, West Ham, Everton, Southampton, Leicester interested

Based on ETH’s selections so far he’s at worst one injury away from the starting lineup

swap for Tielemans would be nice though

Looks like the journos have gotten fed up of pulling names into to Utd of a hat and started doing if for players going out.

I get what you're saying, but Fred and him have done very well together for Brazil.
We have to base our view on what we've seen in over 4 years here. He just does not have the technical quality, particularly when ETH was looking to bring in a deep lying playmaker like De Jong it's such a wide contrast in what he wants in a midfield player.

I have no doubt all our players are better than they've shown if you put them in better circumstances, but we have to be realistic about their true level. Fred will be a useful squad player.

That tweet in the OP  It’s hard to see him starting another premier league game because he’s currently third in line, forth if we sign another midfielder. Whereas, he’ll most likely be starting on Monday.

He's shite but we have zero depth at the position

I probably agree, but it's difficult to rate players in a squad so deficient in protecting the defence . We'll probably find Varane plays a lot better due to the protection which would open up the midfield and allow Fred and those further upfield do what they do well. It might be optimistic, but this is the first proper defensive midfielder we've had for a long time and I reckon it will make a big difference.

You can tell how much ten hag values players like Iqbal more than Scott. Maybe we'll finally get a midfielder that is decent on the ball again.
Yeah, I can tell by how much they've each played.

To be honest, we needed a 2nd CM signed after Casemiro which I hope we do, and we'd be slightly overstocked in midfield if we did.

Casemiro, CM, Fred, Mctominay, VDB, Bruno, Eriksen is 7 players for 3 positions.

Having said that, I expect we'll end up keeping Scott and not signing another CM, which will cost us on the pitch. Casemiro needs a competent partner.
7 players for 3 positions is completely fine.

If we sign another midfielder, letting him go is the best option. But without him we’re incredibly light there.

Iqbal and Savage should be loaned out, not stay as 6th or 7th choice. They need lots of game time. Especially as CMs.

If we get another CM then any one of Fred, VDB, Garner and McTominay will go as that would be 8 players.

Thank feck. Get rid. There's no space in our squad for people as limited as him IMO. Fred and Donny can rotate. Bruno and Eriksen can rotate. If casemiro is out, we can push Martinez up to midfield and use 2 of Maguire/lindelof/varane at CB. There's enough cover where he won't need to be used.

Not light at all. Fred and Van de Beek rotate next to casemiro. Bruno and Eriksen on the other side. With Casemiro out, assuming both Garner and Mctominay leave, we push Martinez up to DM (he can play as an actual DM, McTominay can't), and then use 2 of Maguire/varane/lindelof at CB.

If we put him up for sale Moyesie would 100% want him. We could easily get £20m no matter how shite we think he is. He is grossly overrated by others.

100% this

He literally isn’t unless we are playing Leeds. Can we stop with this “he’s a useful squad player” rhetoric
I’ve seen worse. I’ve seen a user claim, without any irony or sarcasm detected, that McT would be Stevie G in the championship when I was comparing Garner’s situation to Scott’s in the Garner thread.

Surprised Roma isn’t linked as well.

Would be great if we got some decent cash for him.

Nowhere near good enough to even be a squad option.

"Fine" but unnecessary and it's inevitable at least 1 player will end up a waste of wages as he just won't play. We've had 6 players for 3 positions the last 2 seasons and VDB couldn't get any game time to the point where we he had to ask to go on loan so he could remember what it feels like to play football. If we couldn't find games for 6 players we won't find games for 7 players.

Having 7 senior midfielders would also prevent any young players having a chance at game time.

I like him. However, if there's a decent offer for him that's best for all parties. I think our - hopefully - new brand of football won't suit him and he's too old to really be developed as a technically competent player. If he can get in at West Ham or Newcastle that is an absolutely great move for him and I think he could step up with the right team and setup.

Wouldn't take a frivolous bid though, he still has value as a squad player and he's one of the few I don't doubt in terms of professionalism. Think 25m is achievable.

I don't want the young players here hoping for a scrap of playtime. I want them to get regular minutes in the Championship. That's why I want 7 senior midfielders. The situation can be assessed in January.

Yeah I’m fine with that, but if with just Casemiro coming in and him going it leaves us light. I’m assuming Garner is going too as has been heavily rumoured.

Offload maguire and mctominay in the same season? That would be an instant A transfer window.

Why 7 instead of 6? Realistically what use would it be keeping Mctominay if signed another CM? We've never struggled in previous seasons with 6 options, it's just the quality of those 6 has been shite.

If we loan this already far from good enough midfielder, at the age of 26, I’d be beyond baffled. Sell him.

After that Brighton game, I did say that I suspect he’d be gone by September. This joke has gone on way too long and become ridiculous now.

Sell him to West Ham. Weakening them to drive down Rice price, so we may be able to sign him for a reasonable price next summer.

Not that I want to risk being viewed as a man in support of McTominay but I really enjoy the tendancy of people on this forum to add a digit to someone's age to really emphasise their point.

Shows what a lot of nonsense people talk about him being championship level, or him and Fred being the worst in the league.

Clearly these clubs don't think so. I wouldn't shed any tears if he was to leave. He's not got the ability for where we need to go, but he's a PL footballer.

I hope we fleece Newcastle, just like how they wanted to rip us off with Longstaff.
They've already shown they are willing to walk away from deals if they think they are getting screwed over, plus while they may have the richest owners they are limited to what they can spend this summer given they had an outlay of 90 million in Jan and 60 I think so far this summer, leaving them with around 20 million left due to the Premier League's FFP regulations.
