Scott McTominay | Napoli

Agreed. Average player. Glad he's gone.

Yup. I like him, I even would have kept him. But he's a very average player who excels at very little.

People on here seem to conflate getting rid of players/managers who aren't good enough, and often replacing them inadequately. They're two separate issues.

As with Fred the year before, it’s not that selling him that is the mistake, it’s not replacing him with a better a player.

People like to throw in Zirkzee as a comparison to McTominay, but they are very different types of players. It's mainly used as a way of trashing Zirkzee and overhyping McTominay.

I like seeing our former players do well when they move to another club especially our academy players. That doesnt mean I want them back but its nice to see them succeeding even after it didnt work out with us.

I had no doubt he would thrive in a conte system. Pleased to him doing well. But while Ugarte and Mainoo haven’t shown it this season consistently . We have upgraded. Its just looking worse because is playing in a side winning games and with a manager who he fits well with. Good move both sides. Bit like the Samcho thread on here . Everyone loses their minds when an ex player scores a goal

Give us an example of everyone losing their minds in here when McT scored a goal

I think poor recruitment is a separate issue to moving on players who aren’t good enough. If we let players go and replace them with worse players it makes us worse. That’s stating the bleeding obvious and has been happening for years. But taking your logic to the extreme we just never sell anyone. Keep lining with this same bunch of shitty players until they die from old age. Players like McTominay and Martial had such obvious limitations selling them whenever we received a decent offer was a no brainer. And that remains the right decision no matter how much they’re enjoying life in a weaker league, or how badly the funds raised by their sale were spent.
Post should be pinned on top of the threads of just about every player we’ve sold post SAF because people keep moaning about the same thing.

Even with McTominay, EtH wanted to keep him but he wanted more guaranteed minutes (which we couldn’t agree to) and the club needed to raise funds. Considering he was a decent performer considering the wage he was on, he was one of our more saleable assets, as well as being homegrown. Happy he’s doing well but your post basically summarised it. Same thing with those moaning that we should have kept de Gea whenever Onana drops a howler.

it's worse doing that to an academy player is shameful, after his best season one of the few bright spots

I mean, you currently have Amad and Bruno Fernandes. Not sure why McT should be a player you particularly miss, unless you think he could have turned into a CF

Why you bring up CMs with him I don't get. It's like you haven't spent several years watching him be useless in midfield...

Exactly. Selling him was the correct decision.

It's only a handful of posters who are a wee bit obsessed with him.

Can’t be bothered to dig out old posts. But just a general observation I have noticed. I actually like Mctominey always gave his best. Had some obvious flaws in his game like in possession but did ok. Silver lining is we would of never been able to sign Ugarte without the sale. Who looks like has the makings of a top midfielder. But if it wasn’t for this nonsense PSR rules. We would of probably kept him and offloaded Casimero and Eriksen on the cheap.

For 21 mil its hard to find players with similar qualities and experience. Simply because clubs have always rinsed us and no decent players are going to be sold for less than 30m.

So in that regards I wont say selling him was a good move. I would have sold Erickson and Casamero first. Especially if I knew in advance it was going to be Amorim who replaces Ten Hag.

Dont get me wrong he is no Zidane Ickbal level of talent (although to be fair even he was sold) but good to have in a squad and can give us goals in desperate times.

Happy for him. Wish him well. Glad he’s gone. Wish Casa and Ericksen left too.

Only regret is how little we got for him. Need to become a better selling club (should have been sold sooner and for more).

Who's gonna bite...

There wasn't a market for Casemiro or Eriksen last summer. There was for McTominay. No brainer. Especially with the pure profit.

Zidane Iqbal? That's a really bizarre player to mention. He isn't worth crying over.

He's no Mats Moller Daehli

Starts every game for a team who’ll like win, or at minimum challenge for Serie A, but not good enough for 14th placed Man Utd… right.

He’d be superb under Amorim as one of the 10s running beyond the striker. Similar to what he does for Scotland.

Sure, with a little more trust, I am sure he would have handled the ball exactly like Goncalves and Trincao

Darmian, Mkhi, Young and Sanchez have all won Serie A since being sold and we were correct to sell all of them.

There are legions of Chelsea castoffs who look like world beaters there too.

Scott barely looked championship level on the ball for most of his career with us I can't understand the pining for him back just because he scored a few goals from time to time

Completely out of his depth as a midfielder. But a very good forward and would do better than Hojland right now.

That is a bad argument for the reasons stated by other posters but also the main thing is that he isn't good enough for where United wants to be. It's not about the current state of the team.

Also worth noting is that both United's n.10s are contributing more in goals and assists than him this season. That's without even going into how much better they're on the ball than him.

 I like the guy and I’m really happy for him but come on….this happens with just about every player we’ve sold - especially when we’re struggling. We’ve seen more then enough of McT to know he’s not good enough as a starter and he didn’t want a squad role himself.
