Scott McTominay | Napoli

McSauce doubters every time he scores a goal for Napoli:

This might sound a bit crazy but I think he's one of the best midfielders around currently at doing the Lampard run into a box or edge of the box and finish.

Not crazy at all for me. I remember calling him a poor mans Lampard while saying we were using him in the wrong role at least 4 or 5 years ago on here.

Or people can just realize he was a limited player who wasn't the quality we need here for a midfielder, or the quality we would need as a starting cf? Just because we replaced poorly doesn't change the past. But no use arguing here we still have people wanting mcfred back

Isn't that the one thing people agree on when it comes to McTominay, that he's been a decent goal scorer for the last couple of years?

Most sane people, but there were a few on here last season who were like "Sell him now while the value, it is a fluke season, has never scored like this before"

Which was true but was also willfully ignoring that he had never fully played in an attacking role until last season.

Guys has a ton of flaws in his game but some of the hate had people denying any of his strengths or qualities as well.

Lots of people point to his games where he was deployed as a pure destroyer to say he's not a consistent goalscorer

he's been class at that for a while

don't say it too loud on here though, you'll be charged with crimes against football or something

Or sniff at his Scotland record while ignoring he played half his games at CB, which he also got shat on for.

I feel like he would have been a much better rotation option that what we are now left with. Honest grafter with legs albeit limited for me. Odd to let him go when we did instead of others but he wouldn’t have been part of my ideal rotation options list given good recruitment…which we obviously don’t have.

Better question, how did he spend all that time being so woefully misunderstood and miscast? Was it Mourinho's fault? The academy coaches? What? How did it take until Ten Hag to figure out the guy should play as a shadow striker/attacking mid

It’s not that odd when you consider PSR. He would be much better able to cover the costs of Ugarte etc than a player we’d signed from another club. At the end of the day he wasn’t good enough to play for us in central midfield, we desperately needed an upgrade in the position he plays, and selling him made more financial sense than selling almost any other player.

Maybe it was Steve Clarke.

Look at Napoli's structure in possession. It's a very clear 4-4-2. Guess McT's role

It's not crazy. He's a great box crasher which has been the main source of his goals it feels like both at United and Napoli. He's also one of the best midfielders in Serie A, but everyone who knew a bit about McTominay's profile and what kind of a league Serie A is currently, knew this was coming.

I'm certain I heard he used to be a striker. Some of his finishes are very good. Strikes the ball cleanly.

Another important goal for him.
Manchester United might regret his sale.. He wasn't very good overall but let's not forget he scored 10 goals last season, TEN as CM:

and look at the final results of those games: 2-1, 3-3, 1-2, 2-1, 3-4, 1-2, FA Cup QF, SF.. Somehow ALL decisive goals, every single one either to get points in the league/UCL or to win the FA Cup..

How many goals Mainoo, Casemiro and Ugarte all combined scored so far? ONE.
He wasn't really playing as a CM last season. He was a second #10, so more in the Bruno/Amad/Garnacho role than the players you name.

ETH effectively played with only one CM last season, which was one of the main reasons we were so open and basically every team we faced ran straight through us multiple times every match.

Napoli are in the race for Rashford according to numerous sources. That would be fascinating to see McTominay and Rashford at Napoli.

Not complex, we needed the money and he was one of our few sellable assets

Conte loves ex-United players. It's probably something that can't be explained. It just works.

PL castoffs generally have done very well in Serie A for a while now.

Lukaku, Sanchez, Darmian, Mkhi, Smalling, Abraham, Loftus-Cheek, Tomori, Pulisic, Lookman, Guendouzi have all done at least decently off the top of my head. Probably plenty more.

This was a transfer that worked for both sides. His competition in UTD would have been Bruno and Amad. We just didn't need him and we needed the money. Glad to see Mctominay playing regularly and doing well.

That’s Bruno who has started several games at centre midfield and Amad who has had some of his best performances playing at RWB in a side that has struggled to score goals all season.

There would’ve been plenty of minutes for McTominay in a world where we weren’t an absolute basket case that needed to sell him to balance the books, especially as a sub late on in games we were chasing.

Absolutely chuffed for him to be doing well … but he remains a big of myth for me.

I watched tonight’s game against Atalanta and whilst he grabbed some headlines for a lovely finish to score the second and a powerful run through the middle to draw a yellow from the defender, they were two eye catching moments which papered over what was a pretty average performance. He failed to find space to accept a pass and failed to produce any line breaking passes. He was caught of position quite a few times … yet was candidate for MOTM (as per TNT sports). Again, very happy for him but I am seeing nothing which would make us want to buy him if we were looking for a midfielder and he was somebody else.

He was played further forward in the academy. Mourinho brought him into the team to be a more responsible midfielder than Pogba was being at the time and McTominay largely stayed there. Mourinho might have even played him at CB before Scotland did but I'm not sure.

He'd definitely have gotten games and goals, but I get the feeling that, without selling Scott, we wouldn't have signed Ugarte, and we all love him.

McTominay is the new Welbeck. Every time he scores a goal the threads getting bumped with "told you we shouldn't have sold him".

I'm glad he's doing well but it was the right call to swap him for Ugarte.

They can't sign him due to already signing two non EU players in McTominay and Gilmour

And Neres. They'd need to either sell one of those or for Rashford to get a EU passport

Them 3 players you mentioned aren’t in the team to score goals. And Casemiro can actually score a few if he actually plays games. He’s lethal on set pieces. Mctominays best attribute is getting into the box and making late runs. But he offers nothing els in terms of being technical on the ball etc.

A few goals and some people forget he spent his whole United career hiding behind opposition players in build-up and shying away from the ball.

He's bottom 4th percentile for touches per 90 against midfielders in Europe's top 5 leagues (30 a game) which I'd imagine is the reason he looks good. Don't let him in possession anywhere outside the final third and he'll look decent.

We sold this guy and kept crap on the payroll. The most damage done by ETH is this one.
He wanted to keep McTominay.

We couldn't sell the other crap because nobody else wanted them.
