I keep going back and forth on this... that header, how intentional do we think that was? Does it just hit him? Is he purposefully heading that into the floor? Is he trying to direct it that way and the bounce is a fortunate by product?

Fairly standard downward header, no? That’s what you’re coached to do. Always head downwards.

Why this guy is not a striker instead of pretending to be a midfielder, I will never understand. Did he have a very late growth spurt? How did he "decide" to be a midfielder?

He is excellent from the bench. However, whenever he has to start instead of the players in front of him in the team, he is so bad. We can not progress the ball, we can not dictate tempo, we can not dominate possession, we can not defend properly. Just because of the latter, we need to have a more balanced player, that can be good on both fronts.

I highly recommend the High Performance podcast-video on YouTube featuring a sit down interview for just over an hour into the mind and motivation of Scott. A truly fascinating and sometimes emotional insight into his career at United from a boy and his relationships with the likes of Warren Joyce and mentor Jose Mourinho. His candid conversation about dealing with self doubt is a world away from the crap interviews you see around football.

That isn't his game. He is at his best in the role Steve Clarke found for him as an attacking goalscoring midfielder with Scotland. The lad has done what he is told - defence, defensive midfield but they clearly are not his best positions. For a boy who is our top scorer he deserves just a little bit more credit than he gets. The fact is he is United through and through and has played everywhere for the club...even to the detriment, perhaps, of personal achievement. He actually looks more likely to score when on than Hojlund and could easily play up top with our thin squad. A valuable player.

You can't possibly rate him. Also, he is nowhere near as good as Højlund.

McTominay has always been better in the opponents half, and especially in and around the box. When he comes on to replace Casemiro, Mainoo or Amrabat I thought managers would have realised by now that he is nowhere near as good.
He is not a 10, but is more like an advanced midfielder, who makes late runs into the box.

What does that mean? He can't possibly rate him as anything other than shit? What if he thinks he is a decent PL player and not the league 1 standard donkey that so many repeat to fit in with the rest of the sheep in places like the goldbridge channel.

It means exactly what it says. The guy is not a Manchester United player.

His role in the team should be what we saw against Wolves.

I have no problem with him coming on with 15-20 mins to go to freshen up the team and be a goal threat.

But that’s where it needs to stay! No starts please just cameos.

Who has scored more goals in the Prem?
He’s scored a few this season, though not consistently. Never done it before though. Last season he scored 1 in 24 and the previous season 1 in 30. Before that it was 4 in 32 and 4 in 27. This myth that he’s a big goal threat is just nonsense. Steve Bruce from centre half had a comparable scoring record to McTomminey.

A football match does not consist only from attacking play in the opposition half, where he is good at. I'm not trying to devalue him as a player, I'm just pointing out his shortcomings as a player.

This is nothing against him personally. I just think that he is not enough of an all-around player that we need to keep. The one thing I can not go over is that his passing is so, so bad, and that's not good enough for a Manchester United midfielder. When he is a starter, the complete midfield suffers.

This is true, but what is also true is that this is the first season he has ever had a primarily attacking role for Utd.

It is like saying he is not really a goal threat for Scotland because he has only scored 8 in 47 while ignoring how many games he played at CB for them.

I'm one of Scott's biggest critics, but this is somewhat unfair. This is the first season that he's being played in an an attacking role. The previous two seasons where he's scored only 1 each he was mostly being played as a defensive midfielder, and the seasons before that as a box-to-box. As such, if we're talking about how much of a goal threat a player is it only makes sense to base it on the position that they are playing now. It's about the one thing that Scott is doing to a decent level. It's everything else that he brings (or that he doesn't bring to be more exact) that is the issue.

In saying that, the 'who has scored more goals in the PL' doesn't make sense. There's more competitions than just the PL, and while I can understand not counting goals against a low tier club in a cup competition quite the same as a more competitive game, only one of Hojlund's fit that category (Newport obviously). Pretending that his goals in the CL somehow don't count is ridiculous.

Man Utd 3:0 West Ham
He's a really good bench option

Seems to be able to get up to the speed of the game pretty quickly.

Normally I despise him on the pitch (seems like a great lad though), but today he was very good. Good runs, a nice assist and a couple of good passes as well.

When the opposition is chasing and the game is open he's a good option off the bench

I did not like the sub at all. I dont like it at all when McT is on the pitch but he was good today. He also seems to be learning. Not too long ago he went for a shot and missed, today he went for the pass and Garnacho scored.

I would still sell him to gather funds for a much better player though.

You can never really fully want him gone. He has many flaws but when used correctly he’s an asset.

He squandered 3 other chances due to his selfishness and bad technique but yes he was good today.

Probably the only time in his United career when I'm close to saying "he's a good squad player, keep him" but I'm not there yet.

Sometimes I feel like im one of the few who thinks McT deserves a longer stay with this club. Where my fellow McTominators/Tommies at?
He's fine coming on as a sub when the opposition are chasing the game. He is nowhere near good enough to start games and he was awful when we had a major injury crisis when he regularly started. If you cannot trust a player to do a job when rotation is needed then his time should be up at the club.

I hope that the "he's our best scorer" lines are thrown away. Our attack is pretty dire, that the guy is our topscorer tells us more about out attacking players than it tells about him. I thought, he was solid to invisible today. He popped up at the right time to punish a Westham mistake in the builtup which he did but lets not get carried away, only thing he had to do there was to not feck it up.

The situation triggers me so hard - I am puzzled about myself. We thought about selling him this summer, brought in Amrabat, not sold him because we wanted more money and now the guy plays every week while Amrabat sits on the bench for a 10 million loan fee. I already see it coming - in May or June people will talk about us being fine with midfield options and that we should put other priorities first. Damn, this fecking story is infinite

But kudos to the guy, he played to solid to good games in a row from the bench, don't want to take that away from him

Agreed, but weirdly this time it was the first time I wasn't hugely worried when he came on. Maybe he knew it's the audition for his summer move :smirk:.

Thought he played the role of a sub quite well. He has a lot of energy going forward. He is doing exactly what we need when he is on the pitch, he he can pop the semi regular goal all the better.

Not sure why people struggle to give him any credit. Coming off the bench and getting goals and assists again.

He's 27 and we now what we get with him which is awful to average performances. It's time to cash in

He's in the team on merit, we've signed about 4 CMs under ETH so maybe we should look elsewhere for criticism. He's actually a good #8, has scored important goals and gives us much needed height.

Because people are sheep and social media groupthink. Add in that hot takes are the name of day, it can't just be that McT is a decent PL player with strengths and weaknesses, it has to be he is shit and a pub player. Hyperbole rules.

Tell me how he is a worse player than Soucek for example.

I like him as a sub and he did brilliantly today.

Sadly he's not good enough to start and help control games further up the league. Perhaps he'd enjoy playing every week for a different club rather than being a sub impact player for us. He's worth 30-40 million.

Should have had another assist, should have played Antony in.
Well, it's not given that Antony would have scored, but it was the correct thing to do.

Nevertheless, I like him in his substitution role. Roams around with fresh legs, commits to challenge, looks dangerous.

Can't be a starter for me.

I think if gets a free chance at a shot, middle of the goal, no-one closing him, he should always be looking to hit, the only issue there was him pulling it, he strikes a ball well enough it is a valid choice.
