I'm confused, is this an Ole defense or a McTominay defense? Either one is quite hilarious, just want to clarify

Try to keep up.

You mentioned it was Fred and Casemiro against City, which helped in not being overrun in midfield. I then likened it to when Ole played Fred and McTominay in the so called bigger games for the same reason.

The weak link in midfield was Eriksen who struggled to keep up with the intensity, which isn't really his fault. Try putting Odegaard in a pivot and see how he gets on.

As much as I like Scott he has more games like this than he doesn't. This is his ceiling and it's not good enough for us to be competing.

He’s like the anti-Casemiro. Casemiro always seems to be in the right place to snuff out danger but McTominay is never in the right place, either defensively or to receive the ball

No. It's called jumping on the bandwagon because so many on here are unable to form their own opinion.

I think plenty formed their opinion years ago and he hasn't done anything to change that. Genuinely not sure how you can watch him as a midfielder while understanding the game of football, and think he's a solid option. He's terrible positionally off the ball both defensively and in finding space to receive it, and on the ball he's as poor as they come as a passer. So what's left: He loves the club, tries hard, and has a great shot on him. Are we really pleased with that? Really? After watching clubs in Europe dominate for years and wanting to get back to that level, you geniuenly think Scott McTominay is a good option to be in a squad with those aspirations?

I thought he did ok, wasn’t the worst.

It's even more obvious how bad he is now that we have Casemiro. You notice Casemiro every other minute when he's playing. Either interrupting passes, marking people, playing forward passes, whatever, the guy does it all.

Took me until the 30th minute to notice McTominay today, and that was when I saw him hiding in midfield. Just not good enough, at least not for that position. He's better when he has an attacking role as he's a goal threat at times but it doesn't work against these good teams.

Scott clearly loves the club and can be useful in some game. But oh my, he was really really bad today.

Defensively, I thought he was pretty good actually. According to whoscored.com, he was our 3rd best player, with a rating of 7.05.

Made the most clearances (9) and joint most tackles (4) in the game. On the ball, nothing special but he was never there to be that and neither is Casemiro. We expect that from Eriksen and Bruno, both of which had under 80% passing accuracy.

Whether or not people felt McTominay had a good or bad game today, I personally believe he was always going to be targeted because he was asked to come in a replace the best defensive midfielder in world football.

He had a decent first half and then a struggle second, especially on the ball. Had to make a lot of runs out to support AWB and looked gassed in the last 20.

A problem in these threads is that people rarely judge a performance on its own merits, there is always a history that creates a bias.

One thing we have to remember...he's out of position as a DM.

I have to factor that in before the simple fact that he's not a top half PL player.

But the Casemiro suspension led to this the nightmare scenario and here we are at 7:40pm pissed off about losing control of the midfield completely after the equaliser.

He’s like the anti-Casemiro. Casemiro always seems to be in the right place to snuff out danger but McTominay is never in the right place, either defensively or to receive the ball
My exact observation from the game. He has zero awareness of where he needs to be. Multiple times our defenders had the ball and he was no where near them to give them an outlet for a pass. Always hid behind 3 Arsenal players so we eventually hoof it out to the wings.

Why is he the only option there? Ten Hag has some culpability. I was being a bit irrational in the summer, but in August I remember saying that whether or not I support Ten Hag would depend solely in whether McTominay made it to September as a United player. If he saw any value in him, I would struggle to have any confidence in such a manager to come in and straighten things. Now of course, Ten Hag is great, but I still cannot defend or excuse any coach’s decision to look at Scott and fancy him as a midfield option for a top side.

So yea, he’s all we have, but he should have been sold and replaced last summer, so the fact that he’s the only option is Ten Hag’s fault as much as anyone’s. If we find ourselves in a situation next season where Scott is the available option, he takes all blame because Scott can’t have done anymore to demonstrate that he is useless.

We don't really know why McTom is still in the squad though. It could be that ETH thought he could coach him up, or it could be that they just didn't have the funds available to go and get another player after Antony and Casemiro were purchased. I think if they had managed to buy De Jong or someone like that, McTom or Fred would have been moved in the summer.

If loving the club was enough most of us would have played for the club. Simply isn't good enough, not even as a squad player.

He's limited but he's not a DM and never will be.
Argued the same in the match day thread before the game. His good games always came when he was a bit more attacking in a box to box role. I don't know where the notion has come from that he is a DM. Buying Casemiro has highlighted how limited McT really is.

I'm tired of him and AWB struggling to pass it to a man 5 yards away from them. It really is bonkers how long McT survived in our team. Hopefully this summer is finally when we sell him and upgrade.

Championship level player, not good enough to be in our squad. Sooner he is moved on the better.

Whoever is mad enough to bid for him this summer we have to let him go. Any money is a bonus.

Apparently not a cause of our midfield being overrun but what is the main way of not getting overrun? By maintaining possession yourself of course. So a midfielder who consistently hides and offers nothing does in fact make it hard to retain possession which in turn leads to being overrun. A consistent feature of his appearances.

Eriksen made 75% more passes than McTominay today. 75%.

As a team we are 6th in the league in possession, so you would expect our players to be around the top 30% or 70th percentile in possession stats as well no?

Well they are or even better in some cases.

Eriksen - 85th percentile
Casemiro - 87th percentile
Fred - 75th percentile

Now where is McTominay you ask? Maybe a bit lower you think?

The 30th percentile. 70% of midfielders make more passes than McTominay, this despite the fact McTominay plays for a team in 3rd place and 6th in possession.

But this includes the past year so part of last season where we were poor. So obviously he has improved this year? Wrong. He has actually got considerably worse. 44 passes per 90 is the 30th percentile, McTominay now averages just 32.4 passes per 90 minutes.

A central midfielder for a top 3 club who makes 32.4 passes per 90.

In comparison:
Fred - 75% more passes
Casemiro - 96% more passes. That is almost an average of twice as many passes per 90.
Eriksen - 95% more passes. Wow also almost twice as many.

In conclusion, what causes the midfield to be overrun? Well, midfielders who are afraid of the ball and lack the basic skills of getting onto the ball. Principal in chief, Scott McTominay.

I think if they had managed to buy De Jong or someone like that, McTom or Fred would have been moved in the summer.

If he felt he could teach him how to play football, then yes, he has culpability. And I suspect we’d have gotten some money if we simply sold him. It wouldn’t take much at all to improve upon him.

I'd rather see some kids get his minutes for the rest of the season. Mctominay just disappears too often. Take whatever money is out there for him

There's posters on this forum that believe he is good enough to get in the squads of the likes of City. Let that sink in

I think this whole argument has run its course with Mctominay, there’s no bias or scapegoating. He just isn’t very good and rarely plays at anything like the required level, today was no exception.

A very low bar has always been set for him but that can’t continue, unless there is instant and drastic improvement (which he shows no sign of making) then all he’s doing is making up the numbers.

He's one of the few players who hasn't returned to his best (albeit a low bar) form under ETH. Definitely let him go in the summer if we can bring in a Fernandez or FDJ

I just want to know what all these managers see in him?
Blame Mourinho for that. He promoted McTom because of his love for tall and tough players.
Don't think Ole rated McTominay but he refused to sign midfielders for whatever reason. ETH and Rangnick clearly don't rate him

I didn't think any player disgraced themselves for us in terms of effort today but the drop off in quality from Casemiro to Mctominay in Fred is just too much.

I don't think he had a horrible game (some of his jogging back irritated me at times though) but an obvious weak link.
