It was stupid but these things happen. The good thing is though despite him not playing as badly as usual ETH doesn’t see him as a starter or someone to build around or any other nonsense like that. He’s going to start less games and play less minutes which is how it should be.

With odd exception he does seem to be a pretty rubbish sub, going to have to do better.

Idiot. Such a stupid decision to have his hands all over Broja, giving the referee a decision to make.

Right now, that is the easiest way to give the opponent a free goal. Such a shame after the hard work put in by the players.

Idiotic attempt to hold onto the opponent. You simply can't do this anymore in modern game. Even if the referee don't see that, VAR can still catch that. I wonder if he has been learning this from Maguire who also likes to do that.

I'm a big fan of McTominay but these things shouldn't happen.
It's beyond idiotic

He is clearly lacking in intelligence. It will happen again. He does perform a function but it shouldn't be too often.

No idea what was going through his mind to give away that corner. In the VAR era that kinda thing is crazy. Plus Broja put hands in his face. If he had his wits about him he could have gone down and bought the foul.

There should be three penalties every game if that's a pen.
Was soft as anything for me, both had hold of each other, see. Similar every game so far this season.

No issue with it being given as a pen but you 100% know there will be multiple instances of it next week without punishment.

Hm surprised with the comments, I thought it was a soft pen and Chelsea player did very well to make more of it. Looks like a regular hustle but fair enough, he did put his hands around him. I just think it happens all the time and don't see a lot of pens given.

The sort of thing that happens every game without punishment, but what was he thinking? The sooner we can bolster the squad enough to flog him to the likes of Watford the better.

Made a poor mistake and was punished for it. Unfortunate that that was his biggest contribution as otherwise he looked reasonably effective.

I’m not sure these things do happen. They just seem to happen with him…. A lot. Brainless hard man challenges. At some point he was going to cost us with it. He’s been lucky in the past to escape reds.

He’s done it both against Saka in the Arse game and Bilva in the City game. Was only a matter of time until he got punished for it.

Brainless challenge, especially in full view of the ref. You can get away with that sort of thing in a massive tussle, and only if VAR isn’t called into action.

That wasn't on his footballing ability, that was lacking smartness. Hopefully he learns quickly, and if he is going to play in the holding role, you need to be quite thoughtful about when to challenge, when to let the opponent go, when to man mark, when to take a card etc. DM role is one of the most intelligent position on the pitch. The problem wasn't with him holding Broja, it was the amount of time he kept hold of him, he had to let go off him sooner.

The good thing is that he probably learns from that and doesn't give another one away.

Mate it cost us 3 points. Definitely mattered.
No, it didn't cost us. Chelsea sat back and we pushed at the end because we were losing. Otherwise we would have just settled for the draw which thanks to Casemiro we got in the end.

Yes, he made a daft mistake but you people are just going over the top. I'm not a fan of his but even I can admit he's done okay this season. He's a backup until we with all the glaring needs of the squad. The other day he came in an got us a winner!

I think he tends to panic after losing the ball quite often hence some of the challenges. On this occasion his instinct was to stop Broja, but you can’t hold on to or restrain a player for that length of time, the ref was bound to award a penalty.

The issue wasn’t with the grabbing because that happens in every game.

The issue was in him not letting go much earlier. feck was he still grabbing on for when the guy was falling. Made it look so much worse and one of the easiest choice for the ref to give the penalty.

No need to overreact though. It happens.
‘It happens’ should apply more to accidental issues like mistiming the tackle or the ball hitting a hand in an unnatural position. McT decided to grab a player with two arms and not let go in the penalty area, with five minutes to go in a big game.

Whether they always get given, and for me I’d say in the context of the way McT wrapped his arms around him and didn’t let go they often do get given, it’s utterly brain dead. The chances of that player scoring in that situation even if you let him run freely vs the chance of scoring a penalty….how is it worth doing THAT?

The problem with the penalty is how easily he got baited into doing what he did.

Anyway, this should be his last season at the club. We need much more quality on the ball from a midfielder and he's one of the few squad players who could be sold for a decent fee.

I have noticed his wrestling for so many times now but the one time he did it in penalty box, it was given. ffs.

Clues for the clueless, or the bluffers guide to soccer ball part 11. That was a harsh reffing decision. McT was unlucky. Not one of the pros alongside him would have seen it differently. Same with staff. Situation didn’t help, maybe he could have been cuter, but it was just one of those things. Amazing team response, is the real story. Magic to see Casemiro peg them back. His mad face and screams said it all. Anyhow you don’t show football nous by sh*tting on McT for the peno. You show your green belly, which ain’t a pretty sight. Steeer cleeeear, is my advice.

As they say around here; this.

Fair enough, I still thinks there's a big gray area for the ref. Ronaldo is handled similarly on every corner kick, he throws himself into the ground theatrically, and nothing happens. Maybe Chelsea player was smarter here but still I don't think it's that obvious pen. Maybe the fact McTominay was in fact the one who headed the ball somehow influenced the ref.

Already suspended after 5 cards this season, although he does a lot of dirty job and is expected to take one for the team, I think he'll be a victim of his reputation. It's just easy to book him. Would definitely be interesting if it's given if against, say, Casemiro.

The ref could have given one for the chance Chalobah had that just went over. Where he was pulled out of. Minutes later McT does the same and he points to the spot.

It's about having brains and using them in these situations. Just don't do anything stupid, he did and got punished.

Stonewall pen, not soft by any means. We'd be screaming if it was vice versa and not given.

Incredibly stupid.

He got played and fell hard for it. It was a pen and Scotty has no excuses for this. But there are some really over the top reactions to this. He has been very solid this season and has a role in the squad he will learn from this and do better next time.
