He needs benching but there is nobody to bench him for.

There was a point in the second half where he dropped into right back to cover AWB and let the ball go straight past him to the Everton winger who had already easily run in behind him. What's the point?

DvB is superior in possession and defensively from what I’ve seen. He is also a much better partner for Fred being that he is so comfortable on the ball and moving it forward with efficiency.

DVB has shown nothing so far, though he's hardly had the chance. I do think a game or two next to Fred is worthwhile now because starting Scott is like playing with 10 men at the moment.

Whoever plays, the constant chances we give away won't stop until the coaching changes.

It's annoying, he's an average player who is in poor but still gets selected in every game. Bugs me even more when certain other players would get dropped and never get a look in again if they perform on his level. The level of trust and faith has in him is unearnt and, frankly, unbelievable.

I would take 5 mln and run, nothing player. I do not even know he knows how to play in central midfield. Brings nothing to the defence, his passing is poor. Fred with all his fault is few times better then him. He would not get into any team from top 10 in the League. Player at that level should never been in the club like United. Just can stand him.

Awful player, no other team in the league would start him let alone have him on the bench.

I feel bad for the kid. He’s a good squad player but he doesn’t have anything special enough to be starting week in, week out, for a team that wants to win the top honours. “McFred” gets bandied about a lot, but Fred actually does stuff (often badly, but you can see what he is all about).

McTominay is often anonymous. His passing is not great and his defensive awareness is not great. He’s ok at bursting into the box and his finishing is decent, but that’s not how we use him anyway, or what we require from him.

Didn’t think he was that bad. Got forward and supported the attacks, was fairly positive with his passing.

not great, but not as bad as most here are making out. Need to stop treating him as a holding midfielder and realise he is box to box. He needs to play alongside someone like Carrick to bring out the best in him, unfortunately we have no such player.

McTominay has been in poor form and he's fortunate that he's playing alongside everyone's favourite scapegoat in Fred. I see Fred making the occasional mistake; be it a poor pass, a miscontrol and his part in Townsend's goal yesterday for example. Ultimately though he puts himself in that position by making himself move available and taking more responsibility than McTominay. I remember a particular moment in the second half yesterday where Sancho was in acres of space, yet McTominay either didn't notice or didn't have the confidence to switch the play. It's unacceptable really.

Just to add, I'm not attempting to defend Fred. He needs to be better, himself. Better tactical coaching would help the team too, but alas.

He isn't ready to be starting every week, he should be starting half the games and alongside a worldclass CM but Ole has neglected that position and he and Fred are given a task they're not suited for.

Lots of people willing to stick the dagger in on a guy who had groin surgery and came straight back to play 350 minutes in 13 days

Thought he was fine today.
You thought he was fine today?.
He was rubbish today, showed no hunger nor any desire.

There was one sequence in the first half where the ball was coming down outside the penalty area, instead of jumping and fighting for it, he just stood there watching doucoure get ball

Started very badly this season. I don't think expect he'll ever be world class but hes showed much better form than this before. Maybe the surgery? Dunno, but we sure as hell need him up to speed soon.

The thread where this guy was likened to Davids, Gullit & Gerrard because he scored 2 against Leeds has aged well. McAverage.

Serious question: Where was he on the Everton goal? Isn't he supposed to be a defensive midfielder? Why was there a gaping hole in the middle after Fred had vacated the space?

The Declan Rice yellow card comes to mind. Exact situation and Rice fouled the Brentford player and took the yellow. He went for the player and simply took him out.

The guy is bang average. It is what it is. No amount of academy product excuses would cover that up. He is not even a starting midfielder for Scotland yet he is undroppable for us. Laughable. But hey he’s got blood thunder and passion innit ? Neither of mcfred is good enough for manutd but atleast one starts for Brazil and put good performances for his national team.

Clearly not fit enough yet after his injury.

Clearly not good enough either.

I really like his attitude and mentality but he is an average footballer. He is no better than any other Premier League club midfielder and of course he's had some really good games, against PSG in particular. I mean Jonjo fecking Shelvey has had sensational performances against us as well. Belongs in Southampton, Norwich or the likes. Definitely need to upgrade.

Would much sooner see DVB get a shot in his spot than Fred's, and I think it's more of a like for like given that Scott does have a bit more of an attacking role (not that he has shown it this season)

Sad to say I can't see this lad making it here unless we suddenly see a big mentality shift, he's shown he can boss games but he's done it about twice. Not consistent enough I'm afraid.

It was a counter attack from corner, players won't be in position. McTominay was in the box to win the header (or score).

I mean its pretty obvious where he was...

We had a corner, he is one of our big lads so naturally, he will go up for the corner.

This logic that he is CDM where was he doesn't apply here, otherwise we would be asking where the CB and LB were?

Rio pointed out that Townsend started about a foot away from him and left him for dead. He made zero effort to get back, he was jogging.

Yeah, it was poor effort from whole team.

The futility of it all.

 Let’s see if they’re good at coaching as they have one hell of the job trying convert someone with such low base level of positional and defensive awareness. Not to mention the first touch and passing range required for such role. He’s tall that’s pretty much it.

I remember this was hinted a while back when Ole said Mctominay was learning from Matic. Why is he rated so highly by the coaches? Actually we all know why. He should be getting Matic like minutes not being the base of our midfield. How is that even going to work when he's our worst passer? He did have that one game against Liverpool a while back where he played well there.

With all due respect - he can't hold the midfield by himself.

his passing isn't good enough, his positional sense isn't good either, he's not press resistant, his tackles are off

Because he was up for the corner.

I still don't think he is that bad.

He is made to be worse than he is because he is playing more than he should.

He shouldn't be a starter the way he is. I'd be happy with him as a sub option. One day he will reach his prime and have a good season like Fletcher but until then he should be a substitute player.

The only reason that's not happening is because Ole has sorted out 99% of the defence and attack options but hasn't touched the midfielders. We hardly have any great world class starters except maybe Pogba - who many say should not be playing in deep midfield anyway.

Such an annoying mistake.

He's a decent player but as part of the squad not as an every game first teamer. He's not at all suited to defensive midfield. He looks most comfortable travelling forward with the ball and he can pick a pass or get a shot off quite well.

What he can't do well is the intricate pass-and-move in small pockets of midfield space, or receiving from a defender and actually doing something other than popping it back straight away because he doesn't have the 360° awareness that a specialist defensive mid needs.
