To be fair promoting him wasn't the issue, it was how he used him. This is the part that absolutely disgusted me. We got our reputation of giving chances to our youngsters. Yet the moment our manager promotes an academy lad which is not looking like what we usually want, we slam him as a mere "political tool". I know our fanbase have reached new low throughout the years. But this stood up among the most shameful acts in my opinions.
He threw him into a back 3 away at West Ham when he's NEVER played at centre back before. We got destroyed and then he got subbed. We had Lindelof and Bailly on the bench.
He then used the press conference afterwards to blame it on the squad having no good centre backs. It WAS a big political statement and another nail in the coffin for Jose for many fans.
While i'm sure Jose felt he could make a good centre back in the future, that was not the right time to trial things. It was rightly criticised.
After that he rarely played him which showed a big knock in his confidence until Solskjaer took over.
