I swear, people who criticise him don't understand football and how difficult centre midfield is. His positional, tactical awareness is far beyond his age. He's going to be a top player for us and looks better for me than Darren Fletcher did at the same stage in his united career.

Roy Hodgson claimed that he could coach pub level players to shut out Manchester United after 6 months of coaching. He looked awful against Palace when we were not camped in our half. You can’t get a measure of a midfield player from how they perform in a low block.

Not a time to speculate about how he will be in the future. He is doing well at the moment and holding his own in games, so he deserves praise and minutes.

If it’s that easy for Roy to do that then why did we score 3 against them on Monday?

I’m amazed that people don’t see it with McTominay. There’s a reason Southgate and McLeish were clamouring after him.

Talent is there with Grealish he just hasn’t got the mentality.
United level talent is extremely debatable. Either way, you can also look at someone like Crowley, Hodgson and O'Neill both fighting over him. Munir had Spain fighting over him with Morocco. The international managers clamouring over someone to declare means nothing. Sure feck Hodgson even said England was monitoring Adnan who wasn't even eligible. They'll clamour for anyone because it gives them a bigger pool to choose from.

Obviously he is limited in creativity but what I'll say is I personally don't even want him to be that creative. What I want from him is what I saw today, composure on the ball, simple passing to open up the play, not just passing back to the defenders the moment someone's in your face. He doesn't need to be able to create openings for others, just timely forward passing into feet and space for the forwards will make life hell of a lot easier for our attack.

He is the Carrick when he was in his debut season. Offers nothing but composure and interceptions to play simple passes to Scholes.

Personally I don't remember Carrick attempting any Hollywood pass during his first season here, but he was constantly picked ahead of anyone. The caf wasn't happy with Carrick back then.

That is more than promising, because just like lingard, he will show more qualities when he has established himself as a big player for the team.

Exciting times ahead for this lad.

Genuinely can’t believe you don’t rate Mctominay

Genuinely can't believe the massive overrating of him. He's ranged from being decent to looking out of his depth.

But then again its been the exact same for every youth player who has got a chance. Even the likes of Blackett.

Some already made their mind about him and not ready to change his mind about him any time soon whatever performance he makes. Just another Lingard.

I wasn't convinced with him earlier but he won me over. The only thing that matters is the trust his manager has in him anyway, not the fans tbh.

He's done well in about three United games. The hype is unreal, overall he's done okay but showed nothing special. He has to show that in many more games. Lingard won some people over only in his last season with us scoring amazing goals. McTominay doesn't need to score goals from a midfield position but to be excited about him he needs to do more than just slot in. And I know about the instructions and so on but he doesn't even look better than D. Gibson or Cleverley...

Some praise here is over the top, once he starts imposing more on the game I might start believe in something

He's not supposed to show anything special. As a young player, all he has to do is demonstrate he can be a stable midfielder who does what Jose wants him to, which he has obviously done since he keeps starting him.

No, the hype isn't unreal. He's getting exactly what he deserves. Showed nothing special ? What are you searching for ? flair, tricks and dribbling past players to score or something ? Are these the only qualities we should be searching for in a midfielder ?

The kid has played against Seville away in CL KO stage, against Chelsea then Liverpool. He never looked out of place and played with full maturity, composure and discipline. Not many youngsters in this specific position can show all this maturity and discipline at such big occasions. Now throw in the fact he started ahead of Pogba in some of these games and in a period we were under heavy pressure. It's really baffling how can anyone thinks he doesn't deserve the full praise he's getting.

Some fans only look for the flashy things players do on the pitch.

Plays like a combination of Darren Fletcher and Carrick. Love it.

Not this discussion again, sorry. I played central midfielder for 15 years. It's an imperative to watch how central midfielder play. I just don't see anything special about him. Composure etc. okay he looks mature. But also He's 21 if he doesn't slot in next to 10 senior players than he's not made to play for us. I would kind of expect he would have few good games like against CHelsea/Liverpool where we were mostly overrun and bad game like against Crystal Palace. Not sure if he was any good against Sevilla. We were pretty horrific in that game after Herrera left the pitch but he still gets a lot of praise. Mentality is great but only that won't make a great midfielder of top club quality...

I am not critisizing the kid, I am starting to like him lately, I am just not as impressed as you are with any of his traits. Let's wait few more games to judge him more. Blackett looked absolutely unfazed at start for Van Gaal even though quite shit for reserves and on loan, so you'd expect he would turn to shit. Cleverley got even better start to his career for us and at 28 at his peak he doesn't seem to be playing for shit Watford.McTominay was average at best for reserves so I am not sure if I should be expecting him to become anything more than that. But fingers crossed for the lad. I'd be happily wrong on this if we get a midfielder out of him.

Some fans only look for the flashy things players do on the pitch.

I don't see it, i doubt i ever will. Isn't doing anything you wouldn't expect from a prem level midfielder not expected to do anything with the ball.

You saw nothing in that performance that impressed you? His decision making, calmness and positioning is not something every player has especially when just coming into the team.

Jose has already said he potentially has more to his game but at the moment is doing what Jose is asking of him. Im sure he can surge with the ball and get in slightly more advanced areas.

Nothing Jack Cork can't do. You can stay in deep areas and still be effective with the ball.

Passing the ball to the nearest team mate doesn't make it the 'right' pass.

I never said it did. He tried to sweep passes out to Lukaku and Sanchez when the option was open. He didn’t make passes for the sake of it and does look forward and goes for it if it’s viable.

He had purpose to his play. It’s not easy to play in a 2 man midfield in a derby whilst shielding against that attack.

We played really really well in the first half, dealt with their infamous press and attacked with aggression and great movement in the final third.
Scott played a big part in us winning the midfield battle in the first half, we completely outplayed them.

Honestly, struggling to find a reason why he shouldn’t be a starter for us, beyond this season if he keeps developing.
I find very few faults in his game when it comes to playing his role in a double pivot.

I feel like his has a lot more to his game, we’ve seen glimpses of it.
That name.

More in his locker, yet to be revealed, which makes this a lot more exciting.

Thought he was superb on Saturday v pool, only seen the highlights of the palace game so cant comment and he was very good v Chelsea as well. Certainly deserving of his place right now for me and hoping it continues, nothing better then seeing a young player come threw the ranks

He developed very nicely over the past few months. And now he showed against Chelsea and especially Liverpool that he deserves a spot in our squad and that he has some talent. He seems to be a smart boy, taking some very clever and smart decisions on the pitch

I must say i am hugely surprised by him. He actually looked really good in tough, tough matches. That's what a real dedication and professionalism get you. I would love for certain someone to take notes. There is a lot he can learn from Scott in that respect.
But back to McTominay, of course he should raise his game with the ball if he is even to be in our squad. Because even if you are DM, just strictly DM, you still expected to do very well in attack if you play in the top club.

I am hopeful he can be our next Fletcher. I've always said that player like Butt, P. Neville, OShea, Fletch and others were paramount for Fergie teams successes. None of them were match-winners and stars. But over a long season you need these players, that will come on and give you full 100%. And United were short of them in these last 3-4 years. And it's hard to buy that.

From what McLeish has said it sounds like Scotland might play 3-5-2. He's hinted at Tierney playing CB and I'd imagine more chance of that in a 3 than a flat back four.

Looking at the Scotland squad, I'd imagine a midfield of McTominay, McGinn and Armstrong is what he'll go with.

That was quick. WTF with THAT username, mate??:lol::lol:
To be honest had a too much to dream one night, and in my dream, Scott (apart from becoming a United legend as a player) retired and after a short stint at Elbar became the Man United manager and with him at the helm, we started to dominate the PL as well as the CL proper again.
So it is what it is and amen to that, innit mate?

I can only say amen to that, brother.

Sounds like an innovative passionate national manager. Good for Scott's development and by extension for us. Yet to be proven of course.

Midfield absolutely collapsed without him in next to Matic helping control it.

Can’t believe we played Fellaini ahead of him.

His mobility alone makes him more valuable to us than Fellaini.

It was a different set up completely. Fellani was playing further up the pitch with the intention to hit him long and Lingard was weirdly dropping deep. It left Matic to screen the back four on his own too much.

Fellaini just doesn’t have the positional sense. Watch him he never is proactive in tracking his man. Just gets lost and wanders back.

I bet if you asked a bunch of CMs in the league they’d love to play against Fellaini. Never a United player.

I don't particularly rate him but he should feel hard done by sitting on the bench for Pogba any time in the near future.

He shouldn’t be on the bench for anyone. As our double pivot Matic - McTominay is comfortably the best option we have just now and if people think otherwise then they are kidding themselves.

From that game vs Liverpool to the bench just because, dunno age? It cant be form, he is fit vs person who comes from period of being injured. feck, if you are good enough shit, means feck all.
