I do think he is overrated on here and amongst United fans.Is the hype on here really ridiculous though?
Most posters seem to agree he's a solid enough player who can do a job but he's nothing special.

His through passes forward into space or teammates are absolutely atrocious (he either doesn't have the ability to do it or those passes aren't coming for him yesterday), but i see Matic absolutely loves playing with him for sure. He sets the big Serb free in a way that he's able to dictate things a little which he likes to do
He played against Seville which was half of the overall tie and was one of our better players. Would there be as much doom/gloom as Seville if we lost at home vs Liverpool? Yes absolutely. Both were high pressure games just like the 2-0 loss vs Seville and he did more than fine. It was a mistake to not play him at home vs Seville and to be fair I still don't know why he didn't/what the game plan was for Fellaini.
He suits our current system perfectly. By that I mean he is defensively solid and lacks any flair and technical ability
He's as technically adept as Tom Cleverley. All he does is pass backwards and sidewaysThis seems harsh. He seems to be quite good technically.

He will need to kick on though. It's all well keeping it safe and simple but at some point he will need to take responsibility and drive forward and look threatening. But that has nothing to do with technique. His touch and awareness around him are quite good even if as you say he doesn't do much if anything with his passing.
Cleverley was much better passer than him at the time, SAF told him to play it safe to keep it ticking and building a confidence and than try maybe more difficult passes, that's also with McTominay but when the time comes he's not able to see the pass quick enough and move the ball quickly enough. He's as technically adept as Tom Cleverley. I didn't once see him do this yesterday;it was all very negative

No problems with him staying as a squad option but no way should he be starting ANY match for us. A casual cup game player nothing more.
I really don’t see what other people see in him to think he’s a good enough player for united.
I bet you didn't stick your neck out and say this after the Chelsea or Liverpool game?
It's funny that some posters have obviously been waiting for weeks for a bad performance from him, so they can come out of hiding and proclaim he's not good enough.
Well.. do we have good option otherwise at the moment? No.No problems with him staying as a squad option but no way should he be starting ANY match for us.
Yeap, the difference is huge, in comparison to when Matic played next to Pogba, where Matic had to hold his run more and play more conservative to complement Paul. Playing wild like B2B and playing more dictating role is much better for Matic, as he have shown to be capable at that, and actually that good at it. Scott's playstyle is more holding and defensive, so it helps set Matic loose. His through passes forward into space or teammates are absolutely atrocious (he either doesn't have the ability to do it or those passes aren't coming for him yesterday), but i see Matic absolutely loves playing with him for sure. A lot of people don't really rate him, in fact he gets labelled as 'can do a job' player. Wouldn't classify that as overrating him to be fair.I do think he is overrated on here and amongst United fans.
I don't really see any hype, we've had some injuries and he's come in and done ok. I've yet to see anyone say he's the future of our CM but it's admirable hes getting game time and performing to a decent level in the PL.
I fully expect to see him, Axel, TFM in the squad next year and getting decent minutes. I do expect Jose will try and lure a big name CM here though which means McT will become a good bench option or go on loan.
No place for Pereira?
I would like to see it but I think he'll be sold - I remember Mou saying he wanted him to stay & then also Pereira made some comments about not wanting to return early which will probably rub Jose up the wrong way as well. TBH I think we could use someone like him now given Matic is basically our best DM, CM and AM at the moment.
Hmm, I think he's just rightly rated here. He did the job well, and no one thinks he'll become our first name on the team sheet in the future.I do think he is overrated on here and amongst United fans.
We lost to Newcastle and Bristol City. We’ve won every game bar one he’s played in this season (Sevilla draw), but he’s not good enough. Right.
He keeps the midfield stable that allows our side to attack going forward. Such a under rated aspect of football is knowing and holding your position.

Yet I'd be surprised if he doesn't go the Cleverley route, in all honesty. I do think he can be useful if we develop him in the right player, but I hope we don't try to make him something he is not. For example there were comments he should be Matic's successor, I don't think he is as talented, and if anything we would need an upgrade on Matic not downgrade.Hmm, I think he's just rightly rated here. Just a useful squad player, who offers something useful to the team, especially atm. Any football seasons won by the whole squad anyway, not just the first star 11.
Maybe some posts sounds like over the top. Didn't see any though.
Nah mate. When I say the Cleverley route I mean a youth product that at the beginning we all want him to make it, some overrate him and after a while you realize that he is just not good enough.@Kostov Oh wait, yeah I remember some posts are like that. Well, I just take those as some fans being overly excited overpraising him. I say most who supports him are rightly rating him, as he is, and not which he is not.
Actually the Cleverley route.. there are two routes i.e. the Clev (1) before and (2) after his big injury.
---Clev was so good before that (remember his combo with Anderson, they were so good), a tidy player with good attacking movement and passes, link-up plays, good energy, hungry plays, and a certain attacking cutting edge, not too spectacular but helps everyone plays better, basically a very good motivated supporting player with good all-around talents and attacking minded, fulfilling his potential.
---And then the injury, he just stops trying after that, opting to become a passenger in games, ridiculous safe passes after another and actually spend time hiding a lot, no longer that hungry nor attacking. His partner Anderson also stops trying. SAF had to moved him around, and eventually to CDM, with a very simple role, helping the defend being an extra body and keep safe possession at the back, yet largely invisible. Should've done better.
Yes, there is a risk Scott going on that second Clev direction, but I hope not, as long as the manager encourages him to develop and he himself continues to improve his game. Pretty much depends on who our manager is (and on that note, Mourinho is perfect for him) and Scott's motivations. Just continue to develop and not become a waste average who contributes nothing in the squad.
I’d imagine he’ll make his debut and start for Scotland tonight against Costa Rica.
Well yes we are capable of knowing as he has a whole youth career. If he wasn't capable of things at youth level then it's fair to think he won't be capable of it at senior level either. Is it hard to understand that McTominay came into the first team under a special circumstance, and was instructed by his manager to play in a certain kind of way? Nothing more, nothing less. A greenhorn, playing before large crowds and donning the jersey of a big, big club, was not daunted by the occasion and carried his manager's instructions to a T. We don't know, nor do we have any way of knowing, if he is capable of more. That test will come. If he is found wanting then, he will fade away, like scores of others before him.
Until then, give him some breathing space. Laud him for what he has done, and wait for better things to happen. Jump on him when he becomes a regular trooper, benching others more deserving of the spot, and plays badly.
Those zombie critics above, are they United supporters? I sometimes wonder.
