SARS CoV-2 coronavirus / Covid-19 (No tin foil hat silliness please)

I disagree. It suggests many people who have it aren't bothered enough to go to the doctor, because it's not all that bad. As long as they are responsible and try not spread it to others I don't see a problem. We're all going to get it eventually.

If everyone gets it then tens of millions of people globally are going to die. How about we try a cunning plan of everyone NOT getting it instead?

I think it is partially because if you for example implement a mass quarantine before the peak of the virus, by the time the peak comes people would be less reluctant to continue to be quarantined. So the timing of any quarantine is critical to its chances of success.
I mean are they drawing this up out of common sense or is this actually a well known and well studied phenomenon?

I mean with China and their live markets. After this it will be another virus and another. The future on an over populated planet is bleak as feck

I hope that when this is all over one of the things to come out of it is that we no longer pass clearly problematic things off as 'oh its just their culture'. If obviously disgusting and dangerous things are your culture, you need to change it.

Not a chance, its something that will develop as they develop as a country.

Someone from our office was recently on a skiing trip abroad and one of their group has tested positive, they've since been in the office feeling unwell and were advised to self quarantine awaiting tests. This was on the same day that a bus load of School pupils were being shown around the building as we do a lot with community interactions. I'm feeling hungover and sniffly myself (without having been drinking). I stayed around my friend's house who works in a prison. This is the North of the UK. There's zero chance of containing it now, is cancelling events and flights just prolonging the inevitable ?

If it could be the difference between 40% of the population catching it and 80% catching it, then its still worth them trying to contain.

Trump is an absolute despicable human being. The fact the US is effectively limiting tests (I know cost and many other factors influence here too but cannot pretend this isn’t happening) to reduce official confirmed cases so that it doesn’t look bad and impact his re-election is just something other worldly.

But if his citizens can’t see this happening, then ... sadly they reap what they sow. A price they may end up paying for ignorantly ignoring the tell tell signs in past events. Sad for the majority of Americans who actually didn’t vote for him but ended up with him as president.
A lot of his voters are the people most at risk.

Indeed.
We are stretching the planet resources way way beyond sustainable levels. That is pretty obvious.

To me, the most critical thing is the atmosphere.
We take it far too much for granted.
Yet, it is really quite thin, only a few kilometres.

But we continue to pump out pollution like no tomorrow.

Our atmosphere took hundreds of thousands of years to develop such that it can sustain all the various life forms.

We seem to treat it with contempt and will ultimately pay the price.

I guess but the impact to economies by trying to contain it could possibly be worse in the long run, it's clear that the World is woefully unprepared for outbreaks such as this.

I'd much prefer to see places which house vulnerable people (hospitals, retirement homes etc) quarantined against the outside world with people checked on entry - flip it on its head and concentrate resources protecting those most at risk...

We saw with the cruise ship that quarantine doesn't necessarily work and simply amplifies deaths for those at risk because they're housed with the sick.

Are the airports in Italy even open?

Yes and they will remain open for safety reasons but by tomorrow i expect all scheduled flights will stop. The majority of flights into Milan today are getting cancelled as the day goes on.

Just imagine we cancelled all flights to China 2 months ago. Most of this would have been avoided.

Italy did exactly that, and fat lot of good it did. People will still find a way in/out.

Are you in Italy?

If a county gets anything like 40% of its population getting it at one time the death rates are going to be massive, I mean a good chuck of the population would be wiped out. Currently only 0.015% of the population of Italy has had it, and the country is shut down. Even is we seen 5-10% of a countries population getting this, we would see far worse problems than we are seeing now, no country wound be able to cope.

It really isn't. We're just utterly and contemptible shite at sustainability and efficient use of resources. How much food do you think the west especially wastes every year? How much water? How many consumer products are built deliberately to be cheap and disposible, with absolutely no attempt at making things last or indeed any interest in repairing things rather than simply throwing them away and replacing them?

The world could sustain a hugely increased population over what we have today, but at some point it's going to require some basic resource management and allocation, rather than just the consumption free for all that we're all so used to.

I am pleased that you understand it.

I have read that the current population is using the planet resources at a rate of 1.75 and rising rapidly.

Which effectively means that even at today's level, we are way beyond sustainable.

Now. How realistic is it that we humans are going to change what we are currently doing to reduce that impact back to 1.0.

This seems very irresponsible. These marketplaces seem a breeding ground for these sorts of diseases and it seems it will keep happening. Sorry if this has been discussed before.

Well there will come a point where that’s forced on us one way or another. The real question is whether we adapt before or after there are wars/mass migration/global rioting etc over it.

Not realistic when the current trend is to elect leaders like trump who deny everything that may affect his poll ratings and the economy,
Stuff the planet

Nature strives for balance, one way or another there will be a cull of the human population eventually. World leaders should be looking to reduce constant population increases, but I’m not seeing anything other than planning eternal growth...

Absolutely. It's fecking ridiculous and disgusting to allow it.

This has essentially murdered thousands of innocent people, and will continue to do so. You can't allow that based on 'culture', there should be repercussions for this for wherever it originated from - serious repercussions.

It's fecking idiotic in this day and age to keep entertaining these dangerous, archaic ideologies and practises.

I have high some hopes that this will change starting in the US next November

So what are you going to do to China then...duff them up?

First confirmed case in Suffolk today. Suprise suprise it is someone who has recently returned from a trip to Italy.

Also got a friend who has a Trullo out there and she's still going out and says her flight hasn't been cancelled. FFS

Its thought process like this that cause wars.

Also anyone who's travelling to and from Italy, or has been in the last week or so, is an idiot in my book. Unless absolutely forced to do so by different factors obviously.

Tbf H1N1 started with pigs in Mexico. Stop eating bacon or meat altogether?

Entire Global community has had their economies crippled by this - if you think afterwards changes won't be insisted upon within China you're insane / naive.

This is unprecedented right now. We're in uncharted territory, and we're there, Globally, because of one country's outdated practices ffs.
