Sancho won’t return to Man Utd until he's ready - Way too much inappropriate speculation.

Damn. I really thought that this will be his season. I hope it is just fitness issue.

I think it actually makes sense for ETH to be honest about it. To an extent, anyway - it's not as if he has given specific detail.

Otherwise you have Sancho in the wilderness and a lot of scrutiny over that fact. Having that transparency over the situation should make it easier for the player as fans, media etc know where it is at.

No different to what has happened in sport such as cricket where players have had mental health breaks.

Definitely. 20 years ago you could probably get away with the 'unspecified injury' shtick and leave it at that.

Saying nothing about it now just leaves him getting pictured training with a small Dutch club and causing hysteria on social media by simply not interacting with it. Better off short circuiting the speculation as best as possible.

Seems to me that fitness and confidence are both lacking and the club is trying something different to try get him back to his best as he's one of our most expensive players. It being anything more than that is just speculation.

I see this as positive. There's no way this is the player we spent 75mill on. I believed it's a loss of confidence because he isn't this passive. It means hopefully we can actually see the real sancho if he gets his head right. But between him and Mason God damn we don't half pick em. Basically 2 of our most promising forward line turn out to have issues
or... is it the club breeding it? he certainly didn't show these issues before he joined.

Young lad. Bigger pressure than any of us will ever face. It's a surprise more footballers don't need time away to get their head sorted. So glad Ten Hag and the United staff are taking the time to understand him and help him get back to his best.

I cant imagine him being in a worse place than Rashford last season. That was sad to watch.

From the article it seems it's more fitness and attitude related than it is a personal issue.

Everyone reacts differently, but isn’t it all linked together? Often it is at least.

Not saying that there aren’t exception, but as a rule, being a perfect citizen, working hard, doing the right thing, that is really easy, fun, gives you joy and so forth — when things are going well and you are in a good spot. When you are not, everything is hard.

There are so many examples of people not doing the right things. How many of them had issues?

The only way to correct that is by dealing with the underlying issues. We all know that Sancho is a smart, humble and really responsible kid. I can’t for the life of me doubt that he doesn’t “care” enough. When we get signs of him not playing with the right intensity, not being in the best shape — it’s very close at hand to come to the conclusion that there are underlying issues.

Bit of a step thinking Jadon's 'issues' are comparable to Mason's.

Doesn't really read like a mental health thing. Think people are just going off unsubstantiated reports and putting two and two together. Could well be a long covid type issue for all we know but think more likely he just didnt come into this season fit enough.

You can't do intensive physical work whilst playing in games so makes sense for him to just reset.

What makes you ask that?
It just seems odd.

I hope it's just me reading too much into it and it's what it's said to be but I've got this feeling that ten hag doesn't fancy him that much.

He's proven to be quite impervious in his demands and what he expected from his players do to me that seems like a possibility.

feck Ryanair for mocking Sancho when he did make the squad for Qatar.

Missing the penalty in the Euros final + losing form + being dropped from England, all when you're only 22 years old with that pressure on you.

Wow, I don't ever really recall anything like this happening mod season. Interesting stuff, hope it gets the result we all want.
Rooney sent off to Nike (USA if I remember correctly) to go and train

Exactly this.

Reading the longer text quotes from ETH makes me think it's just a loss of form and confidence stemming from missing the penalty and our really poor last season.

Sancho has always been a confident, cocky and skillful player. If that confidence goes then it must be really hard to perform as opposed to players who are mainly grafters.

It happened before of course, but not so openly. Who cares, as long as he gets back to his best.

10-15 years ago, we wouldn't have discussed the mental health of players as openly as it is addressed now. That is progress and I'm proud that our manager is leading the way on that front. Hope Sancho gets the support he needs and comes back stronger.
I love this club

I asked whether people found it extremely strange that Sancho wasn't linking up with the squad in spain when it was first announced a few weeks ago considering he missed the WC and some poo-pooed this away.

Now proving to be a real issue as many of us agreed it looked to be.

This is refreshingly honest from ETH, but also very damning on our Marque signing.

He had pre-season with us, he has been playing games. Now according to our manager in his own words he is "not fit enough or in the right mental status" and "can't give a prognosis of when he will return". Rashford and Saka btw both had international issues before but they have bounced back since then.

Fair enough if some want to downplay the severity of this current situation by putting positive spin on it, and fairplay to Luckhurst and ETH who are dovetailing quite well in softening the impact of this revelation, but can anyone else recall a situation developing like this where a player has been dropped from a squad mid-season, potentially going to miss one or more significant fixtures for our season, with no return date, to work on his fitness and mentality?

Best case scenario it might work out as a masterstroke and he might come back ripped and able to sprint high intensity at his fullback whilst contributing to wins every week, I will celebrate as I love Sancho & his playstyle but like I said in the "sancho needs our support thread", feel like the writing could be on the wall for him and this does not bode well for our £73M man at all. I hope it's not the case but just looking at what's infront of our eyes here.

Not to mention he is on £300k/week and Rashfords' renewal will probably be using that as the yard stick for his new deal. I hope he turns it around and lives up to his status he had before he came here, it's great handling from ETH to call Sancho out and design a path back to the top for him but it is worrying we are at this crossroad in the first place.

I generally like Ten Haag’s Dutch bluntness but maybe he could have been a bit more discrete? I wonder how Sancho feels about that level of detail reaching the press?
I think it’s important to get the fans to understand a little bit more that these guys are human. Fans will be more supportive than pretending these guys are super-human as has been the case for the longest.

It’s good to see proper management of the players for a change. None of us have a clue as to the specifics, but there’s clearly a problem that will take a bit of time to sort out. Well done ETH and the player management staff.

I am glad to hear ETH talk this way about Sancho and get it out in the open. It feels like the club is looking out for him, which makes sense for all, but is still great.

You dont know the reasons why he isnt fit enough but by saying its quite damning of our marque signing you are placing the blame on him. There could be a number of reasons and we dont know what they are. They could range from small physical issues that have hampered his ability to maintain his fitness to issues of personal problems affecting his ability to be fully focussed on his fitness.
You keep mentioning the money and thats so often an easy and lazy stick to beat people with.

Hope he feels better soon, whether it's mental or physical.

Fans will be behind him when he feels ready

Best wishes to him, hope he can get through this and realize the immense potential he has. Physical and mental health is more interlinked than what we usually assume, even more so for top level professional athletes. Reassuring that he's being looked after

You haven't read his performance thread apparently.

There's been little to no empathy towards him for months.

Even with this news, let's see how the what's conveyed in relation to his situation.

Stadium crowd and particularly away crowd tends to be way more supportive

Sounds like depression. A lot has happened since June 21 to now (missing penalty in Euro, racially abused and patriotism questioned, expensive transfer, new team mates & new system, new team under performing, Ole/Rangnick/Ronaldo circus). He's only a quarter of the player he was in Dortmund. Hope he sorts this.

And it sounds like the death of a family member early in the year hit him hard. He is just a kid and it is no wonder the pressures of such a high profile pro career become overwhelming for someone so young at times. Hope the club give him the support he needs and get him back to being the player we signed.

Any rational fan would be, especially match going fans. Issue is the Internet people tend to forget people are human beings.

I felt he had a great start to the season but waned a bit, he's a big talent with huge potential. I hope the training programme is good for him, and if its mental health related he just needs time and a good support network around him.

There should be a limit with the support. This can't be allowed to go on for years. Big wages come with big expectation as it happens in any work in life.

He is in good hands with ETH. And maybe he can work the same magic as he did with Rashford

I have not been shy about saying that it would be his mentality if something blocked him from fulfilling his so-called "generational talent promise."

It is nothing new, though. Saha was being accused of not being tough enough while playing for one of the greatest teams in one of the greatest eras under SAF.

It won't be his fault if he can't make it here. He is who he is. I just hope it is not about some kind of serious mental illness.

Looks like last chance saloon. Think its a good idea to work on his physical side as he's always been a 'sluggish' type who comes alive in moments... a very similar style to the Neymar we see now, which is fine in a uber possession side and a slightly less intense league but in the EPL, it can kill you as a player. If he can reach a point where he can ball carry more and take the game to opponents more often, the better... but it will need a lot of intense physical training to get him to that state. No guarantee this time out will work but fingers crossed it does.

Probably gutted to go from a dead cert in the England squad to totally missing out on a World cup appearance due to poor performance. All the talent and promise is still there. He just needs to be more direct with his play, raise his production and boost his stamina.

Not to get all overly mushy on ETH but I’m struck how perfectly he frames these really difficult situations. He’s direct, honest, and holds the player accountable…but still seems caring and doesn’t seem to be throwing the player under the bus at all. In the modern age finding this balance with players is critical and shows the quality of the manager we have right now…
