Samuel Umtiti

Toby, Gimenez, Sule, Skriniar, De Ligt are hardly next gem, they are already top players and they will cost around half of Umtiti considering transfer fees and wages.
As if Bayern would sell Sule. Alderweireld and Giminez would both go for similar fees to Umtiti due to wanting to get rid before a buyout clause becomes active (Alderweireld) or an already existing buyout clause (Giminez). Can't see us signing De Ligt, he looks destined for the top. Don't know anything about Skriniar. But I'd also dispute Sule and De Ligt as already being "top" players, I don't think they are, can Giminez even be called top class when he's only played 40 odd times in the last two seasons?

Sport today has the latest on Umtiti.

Main Points from the Article :

1.- POSITIONS MILES APART - The Catalan club want to improve his contract but feel it's impossible to pay the nine million euros net mentioned by his agent, which has been offered by other clubs. Barça, meanwhile, don't want to break their salary structure and feel Umtiti is still not ready to be in the second tier of players after Lionel Messi.

2.- MANCHESTER UNITED PRESSING
Jose Mourinho's United are aware of the situation. That's why in the last few days they have intensified their contact with the player's people, promising a contract in line with his exceptional performances. However, there are other clubs now on the phone to Umtiti's agent, too.

It says the player's agent and Barca met a few weeks back. But the meeting was short, because it only served to clarify that the two positions are miles apart. They plan to speak again after the Roma tie in the Champions League.

Have to disagree with you on one point mate, i think De Ligt is already a top player and as soon as he steps into a "bigger" team in a more powerful league people will see that. I genuinely believe he is going to be a once in a generation level defender. He is going to be that good. Just my opinion.

How many goals did Chelsea actually score?
Their lack of goals had nothing to do with Umtiti. Willian struck both posts Umtiti was nowhere to be seen. They got behind them twice more and Umtiti was beaten tits up!
The away game was tighter but again they got behind Umtiti, once getting in each other’s way and another time he was beaten the air at the back post! Check it yourself in the link below. Chelsea beat Chelsea in them games, they lost in spite of Umtiti, not because of him! As I said already Chelsea's finishing let them down not barcas defending holding them out. It's not even the keeper saving them.

And in a parallel to Lukaku, I'd much prefer Toby, premiership tired n tested!

What type of marking scheme would lead to Umtiti chasing Willian out on the wing? Having a great CB does not mean you will never concede a chance or a goal ever again. Barca's defensive record has been outstanding this season even though their midfield is pretty meh by their standards and Umtiti is a big reason for that.

He relies on his physical attributes like Bailly. He's probably stronger and more wise at using his body than Bailly who can get caught out against stronger PL strikers. I wouldn't say he's all physicality though, you have to be switched on tactically and technically to play for Barcelona, which he has shown.

He's definitely the best CB of the next generation now that Boateng, Ramos, Godin, Hummels are getting older/struggling with form or injuries. Him, Gimenez and Koulibaly should be our main targets, all probably unattainable unfortunately.

Thanks for the info. Bailly could be great if he used a little of part of his brain, but he seems to want to terminate everything in his path. Just don't see him as a reliable top class defender.

Seems like when we have a position in mind we always go for 2 targets. It's going to be Umtiti or Alderweireld and I wouldn't be upset with either.

Lukaku/Morata
Matic/Dier
Lindelof/Keane
I'd happily take either too but given Umtiti's age (24 vs. 29) and Alderweireld's recent injury record that offsets the proven prem thing for me and he'd be my first choice. Also good to take from Barca because if we are going to do anything in Europe it's best strengthening ourselves and weakening a perennial favorite.

To the people who pay attention to these type of things Umtiti pointed at the badge after Barca's second goal.

Deserved to be disappointed if you thought this was on.

When Umtiti inevitably signs new contract, would signing Jonny Evans for his £3m release clause be a good deal?

I can see City going all out for him to replace Kompany. The way he was punting the ball aimlessly up the pitch tonight in the 1st half was funny to watch, those alone will warrant Pep splashing another £60m on his defence.

Hahaha

Aren't we signing him, Ramos or Varane?

Just Varane IMO. I can't see the other two going anywhere, and I think Mourinho would prefer Varane anyways, he's his favorite defender.

Varane doesnt seem likely + his injury record has been poor. We need a week in week out CB. Umtiti is a solid CB but he plays in a possession team. Im not sure why we wouldn't go for Giminez who is a player that seems more suited for Joses playstyle. The only reason id prefer Giminez over Varane is because they'd be looking at DDG in return. You dont weaken to strengthen .

Add another average defender to an already long line of average defenders?
Only if we sell him to Arsenal for £23m about 20 minutes later.
I reckon we can buy him, only to sell him for a sizeable profit shortly afterwards (perhaps in January). Besides, if he's brought in as a squad player to replace say Smalling, with us additionally buying a first choice CB, it wouldn't be the worst thing.

His injury record is slightly overblown, he's gotten better at managing his body and misses less games.

Why would Varane leave?

If the offer is good enough, he's won plenty at Madrid as it is and he may be looking for a new challenge, especially if Zidane gets sacked. I'm not saying it's likely, I'm just saying out of the three options Varane is by far the most likely and one of Mourinho's favorites.

I don't see this happening. Umtiti seems to be looking for the best possible deal from Barca. If I'm not wrong, when he contributed to the second own goal vs. Roma, he pointed to the badge and all. Does not seem like someone who wants to leave but I could be wrong.

That doesn't mean much, but I agree with you that he doesn't want to leave. He loves Barcelona. At the same time, you only get one career and he's looking to get the best offer based on his performances since he's been at the club. I feel they will figure out a deal that works for both parties.

He said he loved Barca last night and grabbed the badge yesterday didn't he.

Can't see why a frenchman would have love connections between himself and a spanish club. He's probably just pointing to the club badge at his bosses upstairs to extend his contract by giving him the money he demands

Literally means nothing. It's just what anyone does when it involves money. He has to make it look like he's close to the club to get fans on his side to push for a new contract.

Mkhi used to do it nearly every time he did something. Means sod all in this day and age.

I know it's nothing definitive, by any means. But my gut is he'd rather get his pay rise and stay at Barca.

It's the club he supports since he is a kid.

The chances on him coming here are around the same as when Ramos was 'thinking about it'

Well duh. If he's getting paid the same why would he leave his current team? We're not a bigger opportunity nor is our club at the current level of Barca.

Thanks for that mate.

I dont know what Umtiti lovers make out of his performances against Roma.
Been telling he is not that good at defending.

Been telling you guyz he is not that good at defending.

Physically struggled big time with Dzeko. Hard to tell in a game like that though where the entire team just looked shaky as feck.

Against Dzeko, even the likes of Vidic and Terry struggles, but the issue is Umtiti struggles against other weaker strikers as well.

Just seen the first goal. Not sure what he’s doing switching off and jogging.
Yeah seriously, what was he thinking there. And in second goal, yes pique brought down Dzeko, but right before that Umtiti could have snatched the ball but he decided to just watch two guyz tussle.

Haven’t even seen the second goal tbh. Saw the pen but not the incident/foul.

Biggest culprit is definitely the Barca manager though. Been relying on Messi way too much and got it all wrong tonight.

Tried n tested over the big name...

Get Toby!

Think Lukaku/Morata! Bet it’s the same baller Morata shout outs that are backing Umtiti!
