Samuel Eto'o

Paying £30m for a 27-year old like Berbatov is different than paying £30m for a 28-year old like Eto'o. Berbatov relies purely on his technique and class whereas one of Eto'o's main assets is his pace. Berbatov will likely carry on playing at the same level until mid 30s, for Eto'o it is a downhill only after he reaches 30. You pay for 6 to 8 years of Berbatov's service in one case and for 3 years of Eto'o's service in the other case.

Also, Paying £30m for a 27-year old like Berbatov is different than paying £30m for a 28-year old like Eto'o because Berbatov still had a few more years on his contract and Eto'o is in his last year..

That's the way I view it as well.

Eto'o is already earning massive wages at Barcelona. Yes, he can be on much bigger wages at City, but why leave a club that's just won the Treble to go to a club that's nowhere near the CL, hasn't won a trophy in over 3 decades and isn't even the biggest club in their city?

I think he'll be happy earning a huge amount and playing on the biggest stage and winning trophies then he would be earning an obscene amount but winning nothing for a fair few seasons yet and not even playing in Europe.

Kaka turned City down, for even more money, after all. I just think that despite the amount of money City's owners have, City are just too small a club to be able to sign these massive players because they're just not attractive to the top players.

It's like City are just a step too far to be made into a really big club, even for the richest owners. Players have got to want to go there.
It's not that he wants to leave, they wanna keep him anymore as his contracts is getting to an end and they don't wanna lose him on free.
Eto'o having won anything he could dream of as a club football player so going to City with much higher wages while still playing in the best league in the world wouldn't be such an odd thing to do.

He's said no to City.

I'd love for us to go for him. For 20-25 he'd be fantastic for us.

This whole saying no to Citeh and wanting to stay with Barca thing, I dont buy it at all. I reckon Pep wants him out of there and Eto'o isnt making it easy on them. Pretty sure he'll still end up leaving. Think their manager wants Villa as a direct replacement and his mind is made up.

He's definitely going - and I think he'd consider most CL clubs.

however eto'o is many a rung on the ladder above berbatov, that even if the change in eto'o's level is more than berba's, he's starting at a much higher level so he'd still be better. rather have 3 years of service of the best striker in the world than 6-7 years of service at leverkusen/spurs levels.

So he's still on course to join shitty then. Can't see Barca giving him an improved offer.

I'm not sure - we had the exact same situation with Eto'o last summer. On the other hand, Inter signing Milito today might spark off a wee merry-go-round with Ibrahimovic going to one of the big two in La Liga.

Barcelona Offer Samuel Eto'o Two-Year Contract Extension

http://sports.yahoo.com/sow/news?slug=goal_barcelona_offer_samuel&prov=goal&type=lgns

According to a report emanating from Sky Sports, Primera Division giants Barcelona have offered Samuel Eto'o a new two-year contract extension.

The 28-year-old striker has been heavily linked with a move to Premier League money men Manchester City this summer, and it is thought that they made an official offer worth around €29.3 million (£25m).

Speculation has suggested that la Blaugrana head coach Pep Guardiola is keen to see the Cameroon international leave the Nou Camp this year, despite having one-year left to run on his present deal.

However, Eto'o's agent Jose Maria Mesalles says there has been no indication that Guardiola wants his client to move-on during the close-season, and also stated that as long as los Cules want him to stay, he will.

"The player wants to stay and complete the last year of his contract," Mesalles is quoted as saying.

"If Barca don't want him they should say so, so we can pursue the player's future in a professional manner.

"The club said coach Pep Guardiola did not want him. Guardiola has not told the player he is not required."

Apparently, Barcelona offered a Eto'o a new two-year contract extension on the same terms as present on Monday evening.

It seems that the former Real Madrid and Real Mallorca star may not be entirely happy with the manner in which la Blaugrana have acted, and the suggestion is that while he is happy to remain in Catalunya, he has not ruled out the possibility of joining Manchester City.

"If they have a serious offer from Manchester City, and if they want to continue with this negotiation we could be interested," Mesalles remarked.

"We haven't spoken to City but if Barca have reached an agreement it shouldn't be that difficult to reach a deal."

Who else do you actually think really wants him like City in England? I think you would be struggling to find any club with £25 mil free other than City. I don't really think Chelsea are that interested, if anything they have distanced themselves from reports.

Ronaldo the victim. That got old long ago. The guy messed about for a season, the fans in all honesty would of proffered the honesty, they wouldn't of rioted. Not in a million years, not over him, not over a player who didn't want to play for us.

Havent been on for a day or so, so when i was planning to answer you i see many people have done it for me.

Thats not really true. There would have been a big deal about it made, I reckon.

I don't think many fans would have preferred the honesty. I wouldn't have found it easy to support him if, halfway through the season, he had come out and said he was going to leave at the end of the season. Many fans would have booed him. Rio was booed for stalling over signing a new contract. Ignorance is bliss. I was happy to believe the lie then and I don't feel betrayed by it now.

As for Eto'o, I believe that he single handedly could have City battling for a Champions League place next season. I pray he doesn't join them.

Ok, think for a minute about what would have happened if Ronaldo had come out and announced to the world that he intended to leave at the end of the season. Wouldn't have exactly put us in a great bargaining position when Real came calling, would it? Probably would've shaved 10-20m pounds off the price we got. Instead, he was saying he was happy to stay, ensuring that Real payed full price (which gels with what he was saying the previous season - that he'd be happy to move as long as Real payed the kind of money they were talking about).

I wonder which option Fergie would've wanted him to take?

Thats just the thing, as much of a cnut as Ronaldo is, he lad already stated his desire and "dream" to play for Real Madrid, so it was only a matter of time as to when that happened. He wanted to play for Madrid more than he did for United, simple as.

You know honesty is not about beating your chest up and telling the supporters that they are in your heart all the time. Honesty is also not about using the fans as a bargaining chip or to coerce pity in one's situation only to laugh at some of their ill advised attempts to have you signed by whoring yourself out to everyone bar United. Honesty is about realising the need to perform better and doing it for the club, not hanging dirty linens in public and certainly NOT joining a traditional rival.

Problem is KingLaw, you're such a Tevez fan you're letting your blind bias cloud your judgment.

Tevez has taken the love shown by the fans and shit all over them with his constant outbursts (yet another today i see) and then to top it off he's going to join our city rivals.

Nice... reaaaaal nice.

Having merked the footballing world by signing Michael Owen, it seems Manchester United are keen on bringing another striker in.

That's if you believe The News Of The World anyway.

The paper reports that Samuel Eto'o is a target for Sir Alex Ferguson, and get this - the altruistic old soul is prepared to drop those wage demands that had even Manchester Citeh thinking twice.

Apparently Eto'o will 'be prepared' to accept a mere, piffling and paltry £150,00-a-week to join United, as opposed to the £200,000 that he was reportedly demanding from City.

He is even willing to drop those demands for the best part of half of the transfer fee, which would amount to around £12million.

Clearly, Sam is one of the good guys.

Meanwhile, The People claims United are lining up a bid for Ashley Young, and The Sunday Times suggests that they - along with AC Milan - are after Klaas-Jan Huntelaar.

hummmm.... notw... cant see us signing him and owen when we have macheda, welbeck and petrucci coming through as well...

though if we were to sell berbatov and sign eto id be as happy as michael owen being injured in horsey racing season

talksport reportedly said "eto'o was at United" but I can't verify this as it is what I read on ManUtd Talk when this place was down. Most likely nonsense.

We've signed the former Liverpool and Newcastle player. We won't be signing Eto'o now.

didnt want Eto'o, even before we got Owen. He has attitude problems and from the looks of it is extremely greedy.

I can see this transfer happening. We have money to burn, and Eto'o would significantly increase our chances for immediate success, especially in the champions league. I agree that we would only be buying 3 or 4 years of service for our 20-25 million pounds. But we have a team that is ready to win things, and Ferguson might see this as a chance to have another chance at winning the champion's league. I'm not sure however that we would break our wage structure for him.

SPAIN: Samuel Eto'o is near a move to Manchester, but not to the club he has been linked with over the past few weeks. The Cameroon striker has rejected the advances of City but according to Sport, he will only leave Barcelona if it is for the Blues bitter rivals United.
