Saúl Ñíguez \ Joins Chelsea on loan

Seems like we're actually in for him. He would be a welcome addition to the squad imo.
He has been available for some time . Why exactly did we delay this until Chelsea went with an offer ? Seriously I don't understand our club some times.

Maybe the car crash vs Southampton spurred the board into action. We can't beat a Southampton press, I don't want to imagine what happens if we meet a team like Bayern in the CL.

Please be true, anything but Fred! It is beyond me how he can be a starter for Brazil.

'He's got a great engine'... Yeah but we want footballers and not vehicles.

Our game fell apart on Sunday when Fred went off

Feel like our name is being used to hurry Chelsea up. Atletico need to get rid to clear up space to sign Cunha. I think we have more interest in Camavinga and Neves tbh.

I don't particularly rate the player and have no issue with him joining Chelsea (he's not better than any of Kante, Jorginho or Kovacic and does not improve their side).

He hasn't joined Chelsea yet though, that was the point I was making. He's not gone anywhere.

This is definitely going to be one of those times where the majority of the CAF write off Saul and then he goes to Chelsea and then those same posters bitch and moan about the club for not signing him.

Fred is the most disrespected United player. The amount of ground Fred makes up is ridiculous and although he's not the most technical of players we were overran in midfield as soon as he was taken off.

There's a real shortage of CM options this window eh, especially with Camavinga likely off to PSG. He hasn't been as good the past few seasons, so feels a bit like Falcao where there was a good player before but picking him up at a low point.

I think a duo of him and McTominay (or him and VDB) in a midfield two would be interesting. Fred really needs to be a back up option, and Matic is past it.

He'll go to Chelsea as a rotation option next to Kovacic. They are short in numbers and it makes a lot more sense for them than United.

This is the point I was making in another thread the other day. It's a case of looking at a shiny new toy and assuming they're better than what we've got.

If we can get Saul on loan with an option, it's fine. But we need to ensure that our next midfielder that we buy is the right one.

Even if he comes here, he won't be starting any time soon. Gonna have to ease him in, sub at 80th minute.

Struggling to get excited about this one, everything I’ve heard suggests he has been pretty average for 2 seasons now. If it’s a loan with no obligation instead of nothing then I’ll take it, otherwise I’m not sure it’s the right option.
Agreed, I'll take the loan move with no obligation but far from excited. It would surely signal the end for VDB too.

A loan with an option to buy, not obligation is the best outcome for this potential move.

And he's been poor for a while but mainly because he can't roam as much as he'd like. He needs to leave to develop his game.

Aletico have been trying to sell him all summer. I'd hazard a guess that they've changed stance and indicated that they're open to loan+buy options that wasn't the case earlier in the window. They must really need to move some wages.

Imagine that, Saul and Donny on the bench. If you asked any United supporter 2 years ago that you’d have Saul and Donny but the manager would deem them not to be good enough to start, you’d be laughed out of the room. For Saul’s sake, Chelsea or Liverpool will come in for him.

We've scouted him for years so doesn't surprise me that our name is being mentioned. Loan with a buy option would be a good deal for us, gives us an extra body in midfield but can step away if we think he isn't good enough.

Personally, don't think he's all that. But beggars can't be choosers and i'm sure the board would love to take him on loan knowing that they dont have to fork out money on a midfielder this season (other than wages).

has he declined that much the last years or why doesnt he play. and could he play with pog in a midfield two because that would really take us to the next level against the so called minors

So that was the meaning of his message reacting to our 5-1 win vs Leeds.

He's seemingly good enough for a champions league winning manager at Chelsea, but not good enough for the majority on Redcafe....

I haven't seen him play for a number of years, but from what I remember, he's the perfect player to help implement a high tempo play style. And I think if we signed both Saul and Camavinga (doubtful) then a double pivot of Saul and Camavinga could potentially work, and in conjunction with Bruno, Pogba, Sancho, Cavani could be the making of a fantastic team with high functionality.

He must have lost motivation/fallen out with Simeone. They’ve been shopping him almost as hard as we’ve been shopping Lingard. I wouldn’t mind this signing but I don’t think it will be transformative. Midfielders take ages to get going if they get going at all. If you’re Donny you must be considering your options. Saul is a more accomplished Donny I guess.

Getting Saul on loan would be a brilliant piece of business if we can manage it....would really be an upgrade in terms of having a player who can be calm on the ball in our build up play and know when to go forward or just put his foot on the ball to keep tempo

Mctomminay is a good player. Don't know why he's lumbered in with Fred. He got 8 goals last season which was the most of all our midfielders bar Bruno who is more of a number 10. He even got more than Pogba.

Fred is garbage though. Can't pass. Can't shoot. Can't control a game.
When will you understand that you don't judge a central midfielder by goals?

Nothing will happen if club will feel comfortable about midfield and squad in general.

Fabrizio said we have in contact for 24 hours and he's in our list. That means there is something on it. And if it's true he's available on loan with option to buy that could be a good strategy for midfield transfer. If it doesn't work out then we don't need to active the clause.

I don't. Mctomminay isn't a bad player though. It's just the FIFA fan brigade (kids basically) who think he is. He's a perfectly good player. Not world class but we dont have too many of those anyway.

He's Scottish so automatically that rules him out of being good enough with a large section of our fanbase.

Another able body to replace Matic, I guess? I would prefer someone in the mould of De Jong just because he would be different type of CM/DM compared to McFred and VdB.

We don't know how Tuchel would use him. There's a good chance that he is 3rd choice behind Kante and Jorginho, potentially 4th choice behind Kovacic. Tuchel rotates a lot so even being 4th choice I think he would get minutes.
