I know nothing about him, but why are Atletico willing to loan him out if he’s good enough for United and Chelsea?
Looks like they want to offload his wage bill which is very high as north of 200k per week for squad filler with recent la liga wage bill law made them to think to offload him in my opinion

IMO would be great business to take him on loan with an option to buy. Very little risk involved.

Then get Cammavinga for the very cheap price being quoted, worst case sell him on if it doesn't work out. Potentially get two very good midfielders as cheap as we could hope for.

That's the sort of business Bayern do.

Is he really an upgrade though? Or just simply a case of anyone new is better than McFred? I’m not always on the side where the grass is greener

Mctomminay is a good player. Don't know why he's lumbered in with Fred. He got 8 goals last season which was the most of all our midfielders bar Bruno who is more of a number 10. He even got more than Pogba.

Fred is garbage though. Can't pass. Can't shoot. Can't control a game.

He has stagnated at Atletico, and the team doesn’t need a jack of all trades midfielder.

A change of scenery might be what he needs.

Saul on loan and Cama for 30m would be astute business, though both would be risky transfers.

Dreaming. We’d still be playing McFred every week too.

We are bit lean in that central midfield department especially kante has some injury concerns. One suspension away from looking to play defender there.
Fair enough if he’s squad depth. I was thinking more of your first team where I don’t think he gets into it.

No one wants to buy him anymore.
He's not as good as he used to be. People say that his decline started only last season, but actually it's been going for a couple of seasons now.
Plus Covid... And Atletico wants to get rid of his massive (for them) wages.

I really like Saul as a player but isn't he just the same as Donny and Pogba. A player that is more attacking than he is defending? He's not the DM everyone wants is he? I don't get it at all.

Probably a load of rubbish the story tbf.

Cheers. I just wonder when he’s “stagnated” and a “squad filler” at Atletico, if he’ll be worth the north of 200k that he’ll then cost either of you.

I don't particularly rate the player and have no issue with him joining Chelsea (he's not better than any of Kante, Jorginho or Kovacic and does not improve their side).

Saul is better than Kovacic, he going to improve them, simply because him playing means there's no drop off in quality.

McTominay is literally a worse passer than Fred by all metrics as well as being worse defensively. We don’t need “goals” from his position we need a deeper presence that can pass forward under pressure constantly without being an immobile tree without the ball (Matic)

He's not better than Kovacic, but I agree he'll be a decent squad option if Kante's hamstrings can't take the strain.

Overall, though, it's > £200k per week for a player who doesn't get in their best XI.

Mctomminay is a much better player than Fred. Come on ffs.

If he was called Mctomminho or Mctomaldo our fans would rate him much higher than they do. He's Scottish though so an easy target for the moaning brigade. He's not world class obviously but he's a solid player who we missed at the weekend I might add. He played great Vs Leeds.

Disagree. And in fact I think he’s basically a mirror player of Kova with a slightly better goal threat. They’re the exact same sort of player. Which is why I’m not sure why we’re after him.

His career has stalled for a while. Wasn’t really a nailed on starter at all last season either

Saul on a loan with Option to buy would be a genius move by us!

No risk and potential for high reward.

Also if we let Saul go to Chelsea and we get no CM/DM then we are very dumb.

Be interesting to see what happens.

Yeah but you'd argue not for long. I reckon Saul get's minutes ahead of Fred or Scott during this season and after perhaps a season loan Camavinga starts for us next season.

Both Saul and Camavinga offer more overall. Though I don't think Fred or Scott are terrible players, they just have their limitations.

Point stands though, for the money those are two decent bets for limited outlay. Worst case one goes back to Spain and Camavinga get's sold for similar or more than we paid for him.

Captain average. If he played for United it wouldn't be long before everyone would be demanding an upgrade.

Surely there is some player that Utd can get to sort this CM position out. Most teams have 2 or 3 players !

How many games have you seen him play? He had a pretty rubbish season for Rennes from what I've heard of French fans on here.

Seen him for France a couple of times, and against PSG another few. Not much, but he is very talented and mature for his age.

He’s just a kid from the French league. Ole would barely play him. Possibly would loan him out.

The first part applies to Mbappe as well, just saying. Imo Camavinga should be starting for us and would atleast be above Matic in the pecking order. I think he will displace one of McT/Fred as well.

Come on, this guy is nowhere near good enough to be the kind of man that will step into our midfield in the the PL and take us up a level, week in week out. There are very few metrics at all that he appears to offer a big upgrade and we're not buying potential, he has to be ready made quality.

He's got a nice name and comes from a fashionable club but that doesn't mean he's automatically a level above McTominay or Fred who are good players. Based on what? Performance...they want rid and he isn't a key feature anymore. Statistically..nope.

I criticised the Neves link but I'd much rather that one, even. Least he's PL ready and of an age with some improvement in him and would be highly motivated to come to us.

If there's a loan then nothing ventured nothing gained I guess, but even then it's not exciting me as a potential solution.

He has been available for some time . Why exactly did we delay this until Chelsea went with an offer ? Seriously I don't understand our club some times.

This just doesn’t get me excited at all. Saul is a good player but does he offer more then what we got? We need a pass master like Neves.

I can only guess that we've accepted Camavinga is not coming so we've moved on to the back-up, Saul.

I just chuckled remembering the chap who said his middle name was good!

Something like a loan with a buy option (not obligation) seems like a win/win for all

- we can see if the player is good enough. If yes then we buy him, if not then let him go
- Saul gets to put himself in the window of PL clubs
- Athletico get him off the wage bill and (temporarily at least) out of the squad if they have no plans for him.

Please be true, anything but Fred! It is beyond me how he can be a starter for Brazil.

'He's got a great engine'... Yeah but we want footballers and not vehicles.

If Tuchel fancies him then thats quite a good indication that Saul can still cut it.

At his best, he improves our midfield considerably, is he worth a punt? absolutely yes.

Struggling to get excited about this one, everything I’ve heard suggests he has been pretty average for 2 seasons now. If it’s a loan with no obligation instead of nothing then I’ll take it, otherwise I’m not sure it’s the right option.
