Ryan Shawcross back at United?

I doubt it. If we had one to begin with (which i doubt personally) I doubt it would still be in place 5 years after we sold him.

From an article in 2009

"Manchester United have [a buy-back clause] and they have the first option on Ryan at any price or bid we receive. So if we get a bid for him, we tell Sir Alex and then it's up to him. I think that Alex is being very astute and clever and experienced and you would expect no less from the man."

We had one to begin with. I dont know if that option expires say when he signs a new contract or after a period of time.

^^ Yeh but it's not exactly a buy back clause for X fee. It's a "if we receive an acceptable bid then you have dibs." clause.

So if they, for example, accept a £10m bid from Liverpool then they have to inform us and we'll be able to place an equal bid that'll have to be accepted. In a normal market that's exactly what would happen anyway, the only upside of this is that we'll know about the other team's bid as soon as it's accepted.

Haven't those sorts of clauses been rendered more or less pointless by the increasing role of agents? If a bid was accepted they'd be straight on the phone to every manager or chairman who might be able to afford the player. The only real situation it would seem to help in is if the selling club didn't want to sell to the club with the clause, even though they had agreed a fee with someone else.

The fact that he's really not a very good player is probably the main reason why you'll never want him back. Fergie's just being polite.

Agree. He's nothing special. Would never be anymore than 4th-5th choice.

Look at the article posted! We definitely had one in 2009, whether its expired by now who knows?

The Guardian article is misleading. I think the quotes are from yesterdays programme, in which SAF went on to say something along the lines of 'we've moved on now'

I just read an exchange from a protected tweeter who claims Hummels is our number one priority, with 'Stoke guy' being our back-up plan. He surely must mean Shawcross. What do you all think of that?

Ayee, always thought he should play there.

Set to be offered a new six-year contract apparently. No quotes apart from the old ones from Fergie and some from Pulis saying that he thinks it'll be another two or three years until he is at his peak.

Stoke City hoping new six-year deal for Ryan Shawcross will ward off Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur

Shawcross is in advanced talks over a lucrative long-term deal that will ensure he sees out the peak years of his career at the Britannia Stadium, with manager Tony Pulis hopeful of ending the uncertainty over his future in the next few weeks.

Stoke have stepped up negotiations after Shawcross was called up into Roy Hodgson's England squad for the World Cup qualifiers against San Marino and Poland last month and further talks are expected within the next fortnight. The 25 year-old has just over 18 months left on his current contract but Pulis is keen for Stoke to agree a deal as a number of Premier League clubs are believed to be monitoring the defender's situation.

United sold Shawcross to Stoke for an initial £1 million in 2008 but still have a buy-back option which allows them first refusal if any rival clubs make a bid. Sir Alex Ferguson has made no secret of the fact that he regretted selling the former Old Trafford trainee and could move to bring him back in the summer, with doubts over the long-term fitness of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic.

Shawcross joined United as a 15 year-old and made only two appearances in the League Cup but Ferguson is known to have been keeping a close eye on his progress. In his programme notes before United's game against Stoke last month, he wrote: "I was delighted to see him called up for the England squad because he is a quality player I have wished – particularly of late – was still at Old Trafford.

"The problem was that at the time of his release we had an especially strong group of young centre-halves and it was becoming impossible to give them all games at the level their progress warranted. We had Jonny Evans, Gerard Piqué, Ryan Shawcross, Craig Cathcart, and Paul McShane, and something had to give. We made the right decision keeping Jonny Evans but I'm not so sure about letting Shawcross join Stoke."

Spurs have also been interested over the last two seasons and current manager Andre Villas-Boas would have targeted Shawcross this summer if he had managed to offload Michael Dawson to Queens Park Rangers before the centre-half rejected the move and opted to stay at White Hart Lane.

Stoke are aware they are playing a dangerous game with time running out on the club captain's contract and the deal on the table is designed to keep him at the Potteries into his 30s.

Shawcross is waiting to discover if he will be included in Hodgson's squad for the friendly against Sweden in Stockholm next Wednesday. He was an unused substitute in the recent World Cup qualifiers and is keen to become the first Stoke player to be capped by England since Mark Chamberlain in October 1984.

Pulis said: "The call-up was great for the kid and great for the football club. He was desperate to play but Roy can only pick 11. Unfortunately it was not Ryan’s turn but we hope he will get that chance in the future. We hope he will play well in the league games and get that opportunity to get that cap he’s desperate to get.

"Every year he’s improved. He’s 25 now and I still think it’s two or three years until he hits his peak form. He’s a fit lad and we have not seen the best out of him yet."

Typical twatter nonsense. Hummels isn't going anywhere and we're not signing Shawcross in his prime years as injury cover.

 Not a big fan?

Who isn't in the market for a tough tackling centre half who also so happens to be one of those top blokes who feels remorse when he shatters someone's leg into thousands of little pieces when trying to 'win the ball.'

Good guy, hope he does great in his career.

Good centre back. Would happily see him back here for the right place.

I hope he breaks Alistairs leg.

Where do you see him fitting in? Ahead of Evans and Smalling, or fighting for the 5th choice centre back spot with Jones?

Defensive right back and centre back cover. Not every game requires a Valencia or Rafael at right back.

Pointless getting him whilst Ferdinand is here. Or at all probably.

Firstly, shit, I meant to type price.

Secondly, I don't know but given we have a bit of a problem keeping centre backs fit I don't think it can hurt to have quality cover.

But then again, Michael Keane and Scott Wootton have shown some promise so maybe we should entrust them and save the money.

Who knows ? I'm not SAF.

Thing is I doubt he would want to make his big move only to be 5th choice. If everyone's fit he won't even get a chance to play himself into the team. And CB's need a run of games in a steady partnership to show anywhere near their best form.

He'd be a backup initially behind Rio, Vidic, Evans and Smalling (It'd be much better than playing Carrick there). I guess if we signed him it'd be with a view to him being one of our 4 centre backs once Rio retires.

We desperately need another central defender. Far mroe than another midfielder so yes I would take him too, or Vlaar

I wouldn't mind a strong defender like him who never seems to get injured, rather than the collection of glass dolls we seem to have at the back.

But maybe whatever is in the water at Carrington would get him eventually...
