Ryan Shawcross back at United?

NOTW running an 'exclusive' piece on us buying him back.

When was the last time we ever bought any of our players back. Probably Bosnich was the last but he left due to permit problem I think. We didnt sell him.

No thanks....Were well covered at Centre back...Evans is a fantastic young defender and Brown is a very reliable centre half as we saw with them both yesterday..both of whom i rate better than Shawcross and those two are just cover for Ferdinand and Vidic...Even O'Shea and Neville can fill in centre half duties if required...given that Stoke would demand above 10 million for the player and the fact were more than well stocked in this area with better players already at the club it would be a waste of money in my opinion...

Selling pique still does my nut in. All this talk about buying the likes of shawcross or gary cahill for 15-20 million quid when we had what is going to be one of the top 10 cb's in europe on our books for 3 years.

He was sold because we had and still have better centre backs at the club already...im sure Sir Alex new how good Pique was/is and in an ideal world wouldnt have sold him but there was no way he could break up the Ferdinand/Vidic partnership as they were and still are (form is temporary class permanent) better defenders than Pique...then theres the emergance of Jonny Evans to take into account...anther centre half who i think will be better than Pique long term anyway...you could argue a strong case he is now...only two of the worlds best centre backs are keeping Evans from being a first team regular for one of the worlds greatest clubs...

The fact is Pique was reaching a stage where he felt he needed to be playing week in week out and be at a club who offered him that chance and as much talent as he clearly had/has we couldnt offer him that at that stage...Barcelona could...selling him made sense at the time...as i already said we have plenty of options at centre half even if one or two defenders pick up injuries..case in point yesterday...so it wasnt a problem..

No need to splash out 10-15 million on Cahill/Shawcross or anyone in that position...

He has been a rock in Stoke's defense all season, and was absolutely brilliant again today. Would love it if we sign him back.

It all depends on Vidic. If Vidic doesn't leave then it doesn't make much sense bringing Shawcross in. I mean, Rio-Vidic-Evans-Smalling-Wes provides ample cover. On the other hand if Vidic leaves then we will need a central back. Shawcross is English AND a homegrown talent which, considering FA/UEFA regulations should be considered as a bonus.

After signing Smalling I don't think Shawcross would be signed for any other reason than there being a mistake in buying Smalling in the first place.

P.S. Shawcross is English!!! I thought Shawcross was going to defect to Wales!

Not going to happen.

He'll never be good enough to be our first choice CB. If it's cover we're after, then we'd be better off signing an experienced CB from a midtable PL club to sit on our bench.

he's better than johnny evans

I disagree. I prefer if we keep Vidic, on the other hand Rio, Evans, Shawcross, Wes and Smalling provide ample cover/quality for United's central back's department.

I'd certainly have him back. He'd be good cover.

Is it true that we have a buy-back clause? I remember reading that somewhere but I am not too sure if its credible and true..

I think that Shawcross has a lot of potential and that being coached at OT would improve him greatly as a player - almost all players improve after signing for United and this guy won't be any different.

And with Rio being a regular on the sick list, Vida being courted by the LaLiga mob, Jonny Evans' form being patchy and Wesley's injury record likely to continue I would have thought it obvious that we need to look at the CB position.

Now I don't know who is available from abroad but out of the home countries players currently out there, there are very few that we would want, and even then the price would porbably be prohibitive. So why not look at people like Shawcross?

He is still a far better player than Shawcross

True but if vidic leaves, shawcross could be a better replacement than pique.

Imo, Vidic's greatest contribution to our defence is the way he attacks the ball in our penalty area. no one is good as him in this regards. Rio, evans and wes tend to ball-watch at times. And pique wasn't the best at either, apart from the fact that at this stage barcellona will not let him go again.
From what i saw, Shawcross on the other hand looks very similar to vidic in this regard
