Good move by the club, his first season was dynamite and delivered #20, he'll always be fondly remembered for that, but the time is ride to refresh the forward line.

Still thought he had something to offer, but it probably is the right move given his wages. Just hope we have a replacement lined up.

Love him but this is a good move. Very thankful for the way he played for us. Wouldn't have won the title in SAF's last season without him.

Can't quite believe this will happen so soon, without the a top name on standby.

The tour could well involve LvG experimenting with Januzaj as a striker, not sure he has it in him myself, but will be interesting to see.

When Sky Sports announced he's getting medical at Carrington we probably knew we're gonna get that trophy back at some point. Seeing him training with Rooney in in one team was something out of fantasy football.

Outscored Suarez and then we've outscored City with 20 goals of difference. The last masterstroke from SAF, Eric Cantona would be proud of that kind of a Goodbye...
For the sake of pedantry, he had his medical at the Bridgewater hospital. I was there on the same day.

I think Mata would make a better converted-striker than Januzaj. Mata has already shown he is a very good finisher with both feet. Januzaj certainly hasn't done it on a regular enough basis.

Think LvG is toying with the idea of giving Januzaj a try as striker, so the tour is the perfect chance, tbf though after last season he'd have to be phenominal to be considered a second or third choice for this season coming.

Mata is established in behind the striker/ on the wing and he's great there, so why mess.

Shame i think we could have got another year out of him, his game isn't based on pace if the team was playing better he would still bang them in.

But considering the salary he's on i suppose it's a lot to pay a rotation player.

just dont really see who we are going to bring in to replace him, thier really arnt any decent strikers on the market.

Rooney is next if he has another season like the last one.
I hope LvG has the balls to drop him when he is not performing, and by that I mean really drop him and not play him in midfield. But sadly I fear he is going to be our Gerrard.

The season he won us the league is one of the best seasons by an individual United player in recent memory.

Thanks for the memories RvP, and I hope you rattle the goals in in Turkey.

No way they were on £700k a week combined. Van Persie was no more than £200k and Falcao would have been around the same, Nani I'd have expected to be on around £80k. Even if we went adventurous and added extra £20k to each of them it'd still be some way off £700k a week.

6-700k easily with incentives.

This looks on. Sad to see him go, but he served his purpose well. He will always be fondly remembered for that at least. It is time to move on, though only if we sign a replacement.

Great first season, and played a massive part in us winning number 20. Unfortunately, he's not been able to stay fit, and that's resulted in poor form in the last couple of seasons.

I honestly feel he has something to offer, and considering the striking options out there, I'd probably prefer to keep him. That said, I can imagine that Van Gaal has already got someone wrapped up if he's letting Van Persie leave.

He did his job. Won us back the title and a very important one at that. Came up with some moments of magic after that season too such as his Champions League hat trick under Moyes and his double at Southampton last season which proved a valuable three points.

Good luck Robin.

I find it interesting that we seem to be holding back on letting Evans and Rafael go before their replacements are signed yet are happy to let Van Persie go, a position that we are surely more desperate in.

I thought it sensible to hold back on letting them go in case things go wrong with targets and we end up short so it's a surprise that we are letting Van Persie go unless he sees Rooney, Wilson and Depay as better options than Van Persie.

Also... After hearing the nob heads talk about Van Persie getting preferential treatment because he's Van Gaals son, this shows his ruthless streak and that nobody gets treated any different.

Lacazette is the only genuine striker available who could improve us for a fair price IMO.

I can't help but feel a bit sad that his form dropped so badly. He was so so good for Arsenal, and we got a year of that too. Fergie leaving really did a number on him, it looked like he aged 10 years over the summer and played like it too.

Interesting is one word, bizarre would be my description. There's basically been no rumours whatsoever of Rafael or Evans leaving despite one being completely left out of the team for months and the other falling behind the pecking order and under threat from targets such as Ramos etc.

Not really, he came back and was still in good form initially. Scored four goals in the first two matches including a fantastic brace against Swansea (people on here were predicting he'd match his first season tally) and then went on to score at a good rate in an under performing team until he got injured after the win against Arsenal. By the time he came back from injury in January it was clear Moyes had lost the dressing room and even then he managed to drag us through against Olympiakos and racked up a respectable 18 goals in 28 games. Obviously he wasn't as good as his first season but I don't really buy into this 'Ferguson left and he was done' idea that gets put about on here. It's contributed and Ferguson would have got more out of him in my opinion but it's also been down to Moyes, injuries and Rooney being handed a new £300K a week contract and becoming the main man again after looking like he was gone in 2013.

I wonder how he will look back on his time at United. I guess he will remember fondly his premier league title, but I cant help but feel at 29 he felt he was just getting started with his haul joining what was still the top dog in English football. I reckon United fans will remember his time fondly for that 1 season alone, but he himself will surely be disappointed from a footballing perspective that he only won one trophy. He has tormented us a few times in recent years.. even last season so I cant say im too upset to see him go!

I don't think it'll tarnish his time here too much actually, there was enough moments in that first season that means he'll be remembered fondly by United fans as you say. Ruud van Nistelrooy is the best striker I've seen at the club in my relatively short time watching us and he only has one league title vs. someone like Anderson who has four and yet we both know who United fans will still be talking about in a few years time.

Good luck to Robin. Thanks for helping us to that title. Shame he couldn't maintain that form :(

Van Gaal would never let him go without a big banger lined up.
I've got this little sneaky feeling Bale is still in the picture, or one of the PSG strikers, possibly Kane.
Someone's replacing RVP if he leaves. I'm 100% certain of that.

His options at the time were us, City and Juventus. You could argue he might regret missing out on Juve's success, but considering he wanted to stay in England it wasn't a possibility. So between us and City, you couldn't really say City have had much the better of the last 3 years - ok they didn't finish 7th but they didn't pull up any trees either, just the 1 league title like us.
I too wonder if RVP will feel disappointed about his time here, but mainly because I think he has a right to feel disappointed by Fergie leaving earlier than he apparently told him he would. That first season though, I remember how apparent it was that he was really enjoying his football, it was child-like. I'd suggest that season could be the highlight of his career, so he can't be too disappointed about his time here. If he was still at Arsenal he would have won two FA cups. Meh.

I think we'll sign a striker. I think James Wilson might be above Hernandez in the pecking order. If we were in need of a goal I think LVG would be more inclined to send on Fellaini than Hernandez to be honest.

this is good news for us.

He was amazing in his first season and although he popped up with some memorable moments in the next 2, he was so poor last season it was inevitable that he was going this summer. Nani and RVP were my top choice to get shot of this summer and we have done that, now we just need to sign players for the positions we have left to fill and start the preparation for the season.

All the best RVP, I thank you and wish you well.

He was a major, major influence in letting the greatest club manager retire in the manner suiting to his persona. His dream to become a champion came into birth and he won the golden boot aswell that season. He (and the rest of the team) were just unlucky that the appointment of you know who didnt work out and United in stead of challenging for silverware and continuing the trend were building back that which was destroyed in one season after SAF retired. How many strikers can pronounce that in their first season ( at a top club) they single handedly carried a team to the championship trophy and winning the golden boot while they are at it ? When reflecting on his time at United he will probably surmise about what could have happened if Sir Alex didn't retire but he will surely end that thought with a cheeky smile thinking about the memories of his first glorious season.

The contrary part of me would love it (feel free to read this in Kevin Keegan's voice) if we didn't buy a replacement and Wilson went on to have a Kane-esque season. It's more than within his capabilities.

EDIT: And literally any outcome is better than buying Cavani.

The damage had we not won the 20th title would have been a nightmare and a footballing disaster. SAF wouldn't have retired as a winner, we would have never heard the end of "well he managed to beat Roman's money, but couldn't manage to get the title back from the Sheiks" oh and City (most probably with RvP) would have won that year's title instead and as a result would have won 3 EPLs in a row which apart from United no other club has managed in the EPL era.

For that most United fans will always be grateful to RvP!

Read that the Lyon manager is the French version of Levy, so you might want to scrap the fair price part.

This is sad to be fair. Only seems like yesterday we signed him. That was as exciting as a signing gets - everyone knew it was a complete gamechanger.
