Russian invasion of Ukraine | Fewer tweets, more discussion

It seems that the Russians have severe maintenance problems. I hope that we are able to supply a lot of Javelins to Ukraine so that they eliminate the mechanized Russian forces. Also antiaircraft missiles, I think Germany supplied a lot of those.

The unusual thing in this war is that Ukrainians can have unlimited supply!

reading through replies on that and it appears they are cheap chinese knockoff tyres aswell. The irony is delicious

All they have is numbers and disregard for lives of their troops. Might have worked in ww2 but against a modern competenent army it is just a meat grinder.

It didn’t even really work in WW2. They were pulverised until the German’s became overstretched.

Even with state control of all TV, press and radio, you have wonder at how many ordinary Russians truly believe what they're being told when:

* Laws are being passed with severe penalties for criticising Russia's military "involvement" in Ukraine.
* Access to YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and more has been blocked.

After all, wouldn't a lot of people figure that, if it's all going swimmingly well and they're being told the truth, why would such measures even be needed?
….and your money’s worth nothing, and your cards don’t work anymore. And the stock exchange has gone on holiday. Tbh it’s probably terrifying

Can someone with good knowledge on the situation explain what Putin is planning to do if he kills Zelenskyy? What needs to happen exactly for him to call this a win?

It does happen in the fog of war. The only British Challenger 2 tank ever lost in battle was hit by another Challenger 2.
Didnt us suffer more casualties in DS due to friendly fire than enemy action? GPS was in its infancy and a lot of mistakes were made with targetting.

No it's funny because microsoft softwares are and will continue to be widely pirated and free or close to it. The tablets will be sold online as long as russian's customs don't prevent it. Microsoft knows it and think that people are complete idiots with their bogus PR stunt. Also it's a perfect opportunity for people to ditch Microsoft products and go with Linux.
As yes, most of what they do is software, which you steal on the internet, not in a factory!

And it goes way back to the Napeoleonic Wars at least. WW2 is probably the most noticeable exception to the rule with certain highly competent generals like Zhukov, but there were so many incompetents at the helm too as to explain why the Nazis went this deep in the Soviet Union between 1941 and 1943.

I think it was mostly cause during the great terror, most competent generals were all executed.

Extremely optimistic opinion, but let us dream for a minute.

The incompetance, defeats and lack of progress could be signs of deeper rooted problems within the Russian military that we aren't aware of just yet... maybe.

Great thread.

Is anyone using drones to bring in supplies?

I assume no one is flying things into Ukraine except Ukrainians.

Well Ukraine seems to have gained a bit of ground last two days if anything, after beginning offensives of its own, though the incoming bombardments continue.

Some disturbing reports coming out of Kherson... Looks like Russia is attempting to set up another "people's rebuplic" like they did in Donesk/Luhansk. They have bused in "civilians" from Crimea to use for whatever propoganda purposes they have in mind, have taken over the TV network to broadcast Kremlin TV into every household and are planning a referendum. Also reports of rape and executed civilians to try and quell resistance.

No one knows. Originally the plan seemed to be to replace Zelensky with a pro-Russian candidate & then make sure that the latter has enough support (money, men etc., similarly to Lukashenko & Tokayev) from Putin & Russia... but it would be hard to rule a country where you have a support of, like, 1% of the entire population (more so if DNR & LNR reintegrate, but it's still barely 10%).

That's a myth about WW2. The Soviets were in shambles for the first few months of Barbarossa (when they generally didn't have the numerical advantage, by the way), for many reasons, but the Red Army would become a highly competent force.

Yeah i saw that, i was wondering if anyone here personally knew of anyone though.
Anyone that is a Qanon type. Or anywhere Russia was working the disinformation behind the scenes (anti vax or alt right, etc). Qanoners believe Russia is working with Trump to destroy chemical or bio-labs created by Fauci. Cause that makes sense.

It is nice to read such a positive thread, but it suggests that they have almost eliminated the ground forces which is not the case even though they have suffered many casualties.
I think it is also not clear what % of their air force they have used.
The hypotheses about independence movements in all those territories also seem a bit utopian.

Labs are in Ukraine. Makes total sense.

The best one I read was that The USA was planning on nuking parts of the world as the man made virus didn’t kill enough

I believe they still had more casualties than the enemy in every battle almost till the end. Not necessary due to competence, but also leadership.

Good article on the russian air force

There are a whole lot of reasons for that too, but the point is that there's nothing particularly Soviet or Russian about military incompetence in WW2, once you get past the "whoops all our experienced officers were purged by Stalin and now the Germans are attacking" phase of it. That doesn't mean they're competent today, of course. A lot can change in a week or two, but right now it sure seems like they're not up to the task.

I was going to write an articulate summary of my opinion but decided to go with the statement that the modern Russian army are flat track bullies who don't like it up 'em.

I wouldn't be surprised if it's also just corrupt to the core. No military can be professional and disciplined in such a corrupt environment.

In a morbid way I'm glad that those supposed Wagner mercs encountered the US military in Syria. They got obliterated.

Has this been posted? It’s pretty mental.

Attacking clearly marked and identified press is outrageous. It’s the sort of thing that could escalate this. A country whose press have been attacked would be well within their rights to retaliate.
