Russian invasion of Ukraine | Fewer tweets, more discussion

Looks now as if the Russian attacks in the north of Ukraine are a feint, the real push is in the south to isolate Ukraine from the sea. Once that happens they have a big advantage because roads to and from Poland, Moldova, Hungary will be block by refugees seeking to get out and this will make getting provisions into the Ukraine much more difficult.
If help from the West/NATO is coming for Ukraine, it needs to come quick.

Trump wont get a 2nd term, I dont think so, but thats for another thread

I agree, it was years ago he was quoted as saying he will take US out of NATO if he won in 2020.

He is going around now saying its thanks to him that other NATO members are spending more on military and unfortunately some people still fall for his bollocks.

He isn't that wrong. If you can’t rely on the US, you invest more in your own capabilities.

 Knew I'd get a comeback. Yes, if the US is taken over by a Russian puppet then everyone else needs to up their security.

Surely it's all flown in to around Lviv and the Western part? Avoid the roads etc.

Is admittedly a grim outlook though. It's clear the Russian aim was cutting off Ukraine from the Black Sea, which will absolutely screw any future Ukrainian state economically if the Russians don't leave.

This is such a mess, it's so difficult to see how this is going to end.

I cant imagine you will be flamed for pitying the children Putin sends to fight his war of conquest. War has always been about cnuts in ivory towers moving poor kids around to go and kill eachother. Such a fecking ridiculous concept. War.

It truly is. I'm always amazed that it even works, that people don't desert en masse once they are being told to go and kill people they personally have no gripe with or who they even thought were their friends. I can understand fighting to defend your country, but I truly can't comprehend going to another country to kill people on behalf of some rich fecks who of course don't risk their lives in the war.

Well of course there is the problem that you will be threatened with jail or being shot if you don't fight, at which point it becomes probably a question do I rather kill someone I have no problem with or risk being killed if I don't fight.

‘It makes no difference what men think of war, said the judge. War endures. As well ask men what they think of stone. War was always here. Before man was, war waited for him. The ultimate trade awaiting its ultimate practitioner. That is the way it was and will be. That way and not some other way.’

Long before the nuclear option, Putin would drop a couple of thermobaric bombs on Kiyv and tell Zelensky they will drop one every successive day until Ukraine surrenders. I can't imagine any leader would let that continue for more than a few days.

They have already kind of being going down that route by destroying cities beyond any reason.

That eventuality is unlikely not to trigger some response from NATO, so it would be unlikely to continue every successive day. It would simply escalate the conflict in terms of Western involvement.

Very strange last phrase.
Ban.Totally inappropriate.
What in the hell?

pretty sure homophobic abuse isn’t allowed wtf?

@golden_blunder i thought I’d get a warning for abuse. But homophobia  wtf.
It’s a reference to this image that is banned is Russia because Putin is homophobic

They were being ironic because Putin doesn't like homosexuality
To be fair, Putin would regard that as a grave insult.

These guys got it

Well let's be completely honest, it's only a matter of time till Russia takes Kyiv. Despite all the social media noise and media, everyone knows this. So if they aren't doing anything now I fail to see why they'll do anything in that scenario either.

Not that I think he will use nuclear weapons of any sort.
But just to point out that the bombs used on Japan were Atomic Bombs.
Whereas modern nuclear weapons, including tactical ones are Thermonuclear or Hydrogen Bombs. Because they are smaller and significantly more powerful than an Atomic Bomb.
Both fission (Hiroshima/Nagasaki) and fusion (thermonuclear) are called atomic bombs. I think that nowadays most countries use fusion ones cause they are significantly more powerful.
Modern deployed physics packages are thermonuclear fission bombs. They use regular fission cores which are boosted by tritium gas, in a process that I won't describe here. That is very different from a hydrogen (fusion) device which although can reach greater yield is impractical and requires certain conditions which are hard to maintain.

Russia isn't losing a war against us. Nobody has invaded them. There is no threat to the country.

If somebody actually invaded Russia they would be well within their rights to use nuclear weapons to defend themselves.

Thanks for clarifying they've not been invaded, really helpful

My point is if people think the west would use a nuke in a scenario of being heavily invaded then they shouldn't be so sure Putin won't. His downfall is the equivalent situation for him and we're fast approaching that point.

The economic sanctions are beginning to take effect. Russian debt is crashing and they have started missing interest payments. Doesn't count as a default yet but it's not good and they will be paying for it in the form of higher interest rates for years.

BBG terminal is very interesting to explore during times like these.

Vladimir Putin has warned Russia’s neighbours “not to escalate the situation” by imposing more restrictions on his country.

The Russian president was speaking at a government meeting broadcast today:
There are no bad intentions towards our neighbours. I would also advise them not to escalate the situation, not to introduce any restrictions.
We fulfil all our obligations and will continue to fulfil them.

Russia did not see “any need” to “aggravate or worsen” relations with other countries, he continued.
All our actions, if they arise, they always arise exclusively in response to some unfriendly actions, actions against the Russian Federation.

I was saying from day one, Russian citizens are responsible for what is happening, I read somewhere that Putin’s popularity increased by 11% based on this war against Ukraine. It should tell you everything you need to know. Sure there are plenty of decent Russians that have gone to protests etc., but majority has been brainwashed or have complete apathy towards what’s happening, unfortunately.

Alas a discussion means very little when the whole of NATO seem to be behind not advocating a no fly zone.

Sorry it’s just not funny and I don’t think it’s right for this thread. The fact that others took it the same way should suggest that you need to examine your way of posting

Discussion will go like this:

"shall we Implement a no-fly zone"

Everyone:
"Nah"

"Ok we're in agreement, next issue to discuss is...."

I don't think you can read anything from polls in Russia and Belarus, although I do agree that large swaths of the Russian population are complicit or indifferent. That's what enables so many terrible things to happen in the world.

And, yes, many of us Westerners would fail to be counted when history would test us too.

Nothing will happen, the costs and risk has gone too high.

When Russia were amassing troops and artillery on the border for 'training exercises', that's when US and couple of other nations should have placed the air force on Ukrainian soil and said we're doing 'training exercises' too.

Match bullshit with bullshit in public and let Russia know in absolute clear terms via the private channels that Ukraine is a sovereign state and there will be retaliation if Russia attacks. Put the onus on Putin and see how much he likes it.

Sanctions seem to be hurting. We should increase them then.

Citizens from the west: Putin knows he ain't winning a war against us

Putin: Captures biggest nuclear facility in Europe.

This shit isn't making sense. Been told everyday that Russia is losing this war by the worst figures ever, and now this?

I'm sorry but who told you this ? They have had massive set backs and own goals yet still they advance and are pummelling cities with their artillery.

I agree with Varun here. It could have been done earlier, but it seems too late now. However, if sanctions are implemented properly with no major loopholes, Russia will be in a very very deep sh!te in a couple of weeks. Here is hoping that Ukraine will be able to withstand until then. As long as the Ukranian Army are supported with arms, it will be very difficult for Putin to achieve his goals. I have read that there are thousands of volunteers willing to fight on Ukranian side. This would help a lot too.

I think that the problem for him is that he's too far in to back down. Anything that isn't an outcome he can convincingly spin as a success back home is a none starter for him. And he knows that as pissed as Western states are, very few of them are willing to get into a direct military confrontation with Russia unless threatened directly in their home soil.

Russia has a massive army and, unless they are faced with a larger NATO led army, they will eventually take major cities in Ukraine. But it certainly may be true that it hasn't been as easy as they anticipated at the start (or as easy as the west thought).

That being said, this will go the way of the Soviets and US in Afghanistan and the US in Iraq. They might take over but they'll have hell to pay, the locals will hate them and eventually they will want to leave because it will be too much of a nuisance to retain.

Unfortunately, this is closer to my thinking.

I think there's a lot of misguided optimism about Russia and its society. You cannot underestimate the persecution complex ingrained in Eastern European nations. Some of it justified, most of it completely paranoia.

And even though Putin has been exaggerating this and using it to support his disgusting agenda, it's very much alive today. I definitely think North Korea'd Russia is much more likely than a regime change.

And then if Putin's cornered, he's even more dangerous. There appear to be no good choices at the moment, just less bad ones.

Yup, that's why I said it's too late and risky now. Only way this ends is if there's a coup or if there's a settlement which he can 'sell' as a win.

The time to intervene and stop this was when he hadn't started and could have gone 'I already said it was just training'.

It is apparently difficult to not be racist on tv.
I don't think he's being racist? He's suggesting that the idea of it being used in the continent where he lives is stomach churning, which it is.

Not sure I see the issue in this report to be honest. People can see what they want I guess

Unfortunately, this is true. I remember an absolute majority of Russians supporting annexation of Crimea. "Крым наш (Crime is ours)" was their motto of pride. Sanctions should remain for as long as Putain and his cronies are at the wheel. I am sure a lot of Russians still believe that Ukraine should be "denazified and demilitarized".

I get what your plan was, but calling someone gay because they'll take it as an insult is one of the problems. To the many who won't get your reference, it will just seem like you're using gay as a straight-forward insult.
