Russian invasion of Ukraine | Fewer tweets, more discussion

Why would Putin risk undermining Trump by invading Ukraine 2 years ago? Trump was doing everything Putin wanted to undermine and destroy NATO. There's no reason to invade Ukraine if Trump, as he told Mark Esper, was planning to leave NATO after the election if he won. Trump kissed Putin's ass in Helsinki and stated he trusted him more than the US intelligence community. Over the last month, the intelligence community has proven to be right about virtually everything it said was happening.

Trump was utterly predictable. He was just a moron.

Oh, he was a moron. I just think that he was very unpredictable, and very irrational, so who knows what would have happened.

He's a YouTuber who makes excellent alternative travel blogs in Eastern Europe.

I've heard that he's also into the cheap sex tourism in those parts of the world as well, but I've not read up on the details.

Used to watch every video of his before the seedy details came out. Ruined it for me. Wish I never read about it.
Or he wasn't a rapist. Probably the latter more.

Whilst we will always celebrate Ukrainian military victories, try not to forget that the Russian soldiers are mostly lads who've been told they're doing the right thing. That plane going down was full of young men who leave families behind.

Situation is awful, even for the Russians.

Couldn’t agree more

Geez, can you imagine how depressing the selling point for a President might be to leave NATO in the next election?

Yes, but not a permanent member of the UN Security Council. I await your refutation.
Dude, the UN Charter simply says who are the permanent members. There are no stated conditions. Here:

Article 23
  1. The Security Council shall consist of fifteen Members of the United Nations. The Republic of China, France, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and the United States of America shall be permanent members of the Security Council
You're a fecking idiot.

Someone needs to tell the UK of that because we are building 2 new nuclear plants in Hinkley in Somerset. And then at least another 2 more in Sizewell.

fingers crossed the dymchurch expansions are approved too

The stated conditions are that those five are (were) the only nuclear powers on the planet. You have literally no clue what you're talking about. Why do you think those five are the permanent members and have remained so for so long?

Edit: for reference: " Scholar Sudhir Chella Rajan argued in 2006 that the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, who are all nuclear powers, have created an exclusive nuclear club that predominantly addresses the strategic interests and political motives of the permanent members—for example, protecting the oil-rich Kuwaitis in 1991 but poorly protecting resource-poor Rwandans in 1994."

The five powers (one nuclear, one quasi-nuclear, one almost there via espionage, another guaranteed said status by its relationship to the first and second, and the fifth, China) were granted this status in 45. Within twenty years, the only thing that kept them in that position was nuclear capacity (once China had come on board). After which they have maintained their position ever since. None of these five states will ever abandon nuclear and it is not entirely because of energy (it is possible, for example, that the UK will not need nuclear in three decades but it will retain the capacity to enrich uranium at a high level within its own terrestrial borders).

I'm open to a different interpretation. Perhaps these five being nuclear states really isn't why they have kept the security council closed for 80 years (60 in practice).

humans are so worthless overall. Fighting over literally inconceivably small pieces of land when you consider the vastness of the universe and everything out there.
Our consistency is impressive at least: still fighting over the western Eurasian steppe since, well…the dawn of history I suppose.

Wait, rapist? What? I don't want to derail this thread but that's news to me. I'd heard that he approached random Ukrainian women and proposed sex (sometimes paying for it?) but I had no idea about anything like that! Are you sure?!

I don't support invasion of any country on territory of another so I'm strongly against Russian invasion but...

how is this invasion different to what America is doing last 20+ years in middle east. How can they on one hand distrupt peace in all continents around the world in last 40 years mostly just because of their benefits and still act so stupid like they are saints against Russia. And other NATO countries including mine is in same water taking part in NATO missions and now acting like angels.
And all western media and citizens are playing this game. I like the outcry about Russian invasion because what are they done, even if heavily provoked, is not right, but why there are no outcry when USA and NATO is invading?

Half a million people took to the streets in Berlin alone to make their voices heard against the Iraq war. Western nations like Germany and France openly opposed the war.

What other invasions? Afghanistan was invaded because of 9/11. Yugoslavia was bombed because of a civil war that included ethnic cleansing and genocide.

It's plain wrong that there is no outcry over US/NATO wars. And none of these wars included invading a democratic country to annex it into your country.

The main Russian attack come through another former Soviet state in Belarus but here our media doesn’t make a big deal out of it and continues with the *Putin has no support* line. Laughable.

Come on, this hasn't happened.
Hence ‘unverified’ but we know the offensive was beaten back by Ukraine and they took a lot of prisoners, now they’re getting bombarded if you go look at recent Twitter videos. Point being, awful for both sides.

i went down a Reddit black hole one day after finding the details and saw court documents and loads of details - yeah. He also committed pretty serious financial fraud If I remember

Yeah I was the same. Really enjoyed the channel and then saw it was true and haven’t watched since. Really dodgey stories about him and I think it was some Redditor who exposed him.

:( I'll have to look into it and judge for myself, but if what you say is true, it's going to make it difficult to want to watch his content. Which is a shame, he seemed so likeable and down to earth. FFS!

You don't know what you're talking about. UN Charter of 1945 made all 5 permanent members, only 1 had nukes at the time.

Some of the unverified numbers on Twitter are horrendous. 3000+ Russian soldiers dead in Kharkiv…someone in Russia needs to stop Putin.

I don't think that such numbers hold truth. But if attrition and disheartening become serious among Russian troops, I can see situations in which soldiers will outright shoot their own officers and walk back home.

Going to be a lot more of this to come unfortunately :(

There needs to be as much real footage and accounts like this as possible.

It’s crucial that people understand war from a human point of view, and not just from a media narrative.

That goes for every war. The reality is that normal people don’t like this, it isn’t ‘in our nature’, it’s disturbing and painful and we hate it.

Innocent people must stop dying and suffering for the greed of pathetic sociopaths.

It feels so surreal seeing something like this happening and something the younger generation has ever experienced. I was too young to even remember 9/11 let alone anything like the Cuban missile crisis or the wars in the Baltic countries during the 90's (apologies if i got that wrong). But seeing all the various twitter updates throughout the day, information right or wrong, makes me wonder what on earth life must of been like in WW1/WW2. Back then most people relied on radio for news and most news wasn't broadcast until the news was confirmed. It must of been torture potentially going hours not knowing what's going on and wondering what the fate of the world and life as they know it will be. Compare that to today and the second something happens it's pretty much on tv and twitter straight away.

Huh? At the time the UN Charter gave those five countries permanent seats on the security council, only the US had nuclear weapons.

Please. I'm curious. What has NATO ever done that come close to what is happening now? I need to be educated and I don't want to research the answer myself.
Ask America how much they will like if Cuba became ally of Russia and they plan to set few rockets in Cuba.
Some will remember or know that the last time that happened we were one push of a button away from not following the MAD.

If I understand it correctly you are mistakenly mixing nuclear-weapons countries with the possession of nuclear power plants. That's a pretty basic mistake.

Oh man these footages are heartbreaking. Also the shelling vid.... fecking hell imagine being there

Its what America always does best, flexing their military might. I"m sure there were many things that could have been done without triggering an all out war. Biden just said he's moving US troops over to the eastern NATO front, into countries like Lithuania Hungary Romania... he could have done that months ago. Literally anything is better than nothing.
You mean what we've been doing now for years?

From a Ukranian guy thats has been one step ahead of every news channel so far:

"Ukraine air force lost 15 aircraft, Russia suffered severe casualties in 1st wave, 2nd wave beginning and now assaulting Mariupol"
