Russian invasion of Ukraine | Fewer tweets, more discussion

Obviously. My point was that scores of people have been making opinion-based predictions throughout the entire thread, me too, because it's the natural response to a possible event. I don't see the value in "gotcha" posts (even though some of those you quote I disagree with most) but don't want to derail.

Perhaps, but this whole thing has really pissed me off.

They want to instill their own government which will make Ukraine a satellite country, at least this is what probably is his main goal. Thus alienating them from any ideas about EU and NATO.

With all the air forces Russia have they can paralize Ukraine in couple of days..

Whatever his intentions are, he'll get it once his tanks are infront of Kiev White House. Hell Putin might have draft the whole think to be signed under gun point.

Kyiv government are advising their people to hide undeground as there is imminent risk of air attack. This is escalating very quickly.

And maybe he’d have fired you for your comment in this fictional world of bosses and workers.

Glad you're having fun. Meanwhile people are dying in a war. But yay, you win the internet argument?

Attaboy.

I'm not 100% sure. Ukraine are apparently pretty well equipped themselves with whatever they have been handed by the West in the last months. It will take more than a few days.

I'm by no means well in formed on the subject but it's possible NATO has been stalling on Ukraine's admittance to NATO under the misguided idea of not provoking Russia.

One of the main stipulation for NATO membership is that a country can't have any disputed borders or territories, something Ukraine has been involved in for a long time, so there's a huge question mark over their membership eligibility to begin with.

This.

The notion of Putin’s era NOT triggering a massive war at some point has never been buyable.

He’s a terrifying personality to be in that position.

I think a lot of the global destabilising events of the last 10 years have had Russian involvement and I also think this invasion will trigger what will come to be known as WW3, it’s been coming for some time, and these types of personalities aren’t capable of leading without following this narrative - they aren’t sophisticated enough.

Doubt it has much to do about being sophisticated enough. Their position is obviously threatened if the country is modernized, he’s essentially a dictator and they’ve been pocketing billions...He’s very calculated

They don't have the proper training for couple of months to stand tall against enemy that has numbers 10x they could pull off in every sense, especially in the air.

I can't trust Twitter because it's just a bunch of random videos that could be from anywhere or any time (one person posted a video of Russian and Ukranian soldiers dancing ffs).

If CNN are on the ground, in Kyiv, there has to be a better source than some random twitter accounts for what is actually happening.
https://twitter.com/Cen4infoRes and https://twitter.com/bellingcat are both good for verifying info and making sense of it all.

https://twitter.com/RALee85 is very comprehensive and doesn't appear to be getting much wrong.

The major news networks will be very much dependent on crowd-sourced info in this style of invasion.

Wait what? Are you serious?

Yeah what's wrong with that? Libya needs help. You lot all rushed to bomb the feck out of and destablise it into a hell hole, you can help put it back together again.

Iran has huge reserves and is being unfairly sanctioned.

Also the only real impact you can have on Russia is by not buying it's energy and hurting the pockets of the oligarchs who prop up Putin.

If you pay for it, nobody minds. It's the invading and taking thats the problem.

It's not about paying for it, but the hypocrisy of it all.

You sanction Iran because they're radical? Terrorist? etc but when your gas got hit you welcome them back with open arms? So all those sanctions for something evil that Iran supposedly did, is now forgiven because we need oil?

You don't see the irony here? You could have just ignored his comment, but instead you decided to make a big point out of it, ending in the condescending "attaboy", just to score some internet points. And all this while people are dying in a war.

Maybe he and I are misguided, but you're sure as hell no better.

One of the most surreal things about all this is that for all the “better prepared” talk, they’ve not mined harbours or blown up bridges/runways/train lines. Almost like they don’t want to anger Putin.
They should definitely have mined the harbor... the problem with the rail/runway/bridge destruction though, is you don't want to remove those resources from your own use until absolutely necessary. I do completely agree though, that as they retreat they need to go scorched earth and remove that infrastructure from Russian hands.

In this day and age I'm not sure how effective or sustainable that would be. I can't see the Ukrainian people accepting such a reality, especially if what awaits them (besides Russian coated oppression) would inevitably include economic ostracisation from the rest of the world.

You can easily spin it and ask how effective and sustainable it’s going to be to work against such a reality.

Harrowing stuff, already seen videos of innocents and civilians buildings targeted. Soldiers and innocent people will lose their lives while the politicians sit in comfort, stop fighting wars for the rich.
