Russian invasion of Ukraine | Fewer tweets, more discussion

Nobody should be cheering people dying.

But given this is a situation where Russia is clearly the aggressor and Ukraine clearly the victim, Russian millitary cost and defeat should be something we want. And that inevitably means Russian soldiers dying. There's no point in pretending that isn't what support for Ukraine resistance entails in this scenario.

Soldiers dying shouldn't be celebrated. They are simply obeying orders.
Did you cheer for the Iraqis killing American and British soldiers?

Because it's not THAT big of a difference!

This is a picture of US military bases and naval fleets.
One could say it's pretty fecking obvious.

If that's not call surrounding then i don't know what is.

Now, what would they think would happen? Inviting Ukraine to NATO? Arming them?

You are all over the place. NATO isn't the US and NATO doesn't responds or communicate in place of the US DoD.

Are we (the UK) actually doing anything to punish Russia? I haven't seen or heard anything from the Government, I thought given they were convinced an invasion would happen we would have everything ready to go immediately?

The world cannot just sit back and watch this happen. People need to move away from ' ah its not near us, it's not our concern' this is very real

The world absolutely can. Again the one sided conflict in Yemen and humanitarian crisis is still happening despite the fact that the world barely mentions it in the news.

Cause it’s in Europe init.

Probably waiting for the US signal. I expect UK to follow US' foreign policy here.

EU is going to be softer though.

Naive when the Tories are just an extension of rich Russian interests.

You don't pay so much money and expect punishment. As always with the liar in chief, words are meaningless because actions rarely, if ever, follow them.

Have lived in Czech Republic now for 14 years. A traditional central European country. I work for an American company that has a global footprint. I have many friends scattered all over Europe. I have travelled all over Europe, Russia included.

I am sat here in a daze. I have friends who have today been called up to the army. I have friends in Poland who when they look out of their window, they can see streams of Ukranian people arriving, scared and in tears.

I have friends sat at home not knowing if a bomb will drop on their head.

Please please, we must all stand together and stop him. Nato, US, UK, please dont let him take over another country. He wont stop and will keep going. They are shelling locations 70km from the Poland border. Putin must be stopped at whatever means necessary,

US are putting their soldiers here so we've had planes flying over our Eastern cities all the time too.

As I said, nobody should be cheering for indivual soldiers' deaths.

But if you want Ukrainian millitary success in the face of Russian invasion, then you want Russian soliders to be killed. Because that's what that entails. There's no point divorcing one from the other or obfuscating reality with choice language that avoids stating that that's what would be neccessary for the invasion to be resisted.

Any news on sanctions?

From bbc

EU sanctions will erode Russia's economy - Von Der Leyen
The president of the European Commission Ursula Von Der Leyen is speaking in Brussels to outline sanctions to "seriously degrade the Russian economy".
She says:
  • We will freeze Russian assets in the EU and stop the access of Russian banks to the European financial market
  • The measures will impact Russia severely, increasing capital outflow, raising inflation and gradually eroding its industrial basis
  • We will weaken Russia's technological position in key areas from high-tech components to cutting-edge software

The world absolutely can. Again the one sided conflict in Yemen and humanitarian crisis is still happening despite the fact that the world barely mentions it in the news.

And the world will do exactly that. Some minor economical sanctions, that won't really bother anyone, as they were already expected by the russian government. The west won't risk WW3 for Ukraine, that much I'm sure. Unfortunately, that's so obvious for russia, that they can do whatever they want.

The world cannot just sit back and watch this happen. People need to move away from ' ah its not near us, it's not our concern' this is very real

Its not so much “ah it’s not near us”

its more “it’ll cause WW3”

we all hate bullies, and Russia are barbaricly bullying Ukraine here

its not nice too see, but WW3 is the outcome of NATO getting involved.

Do you want world war 3?

I feel we aren’t doing enough, detest bullies, would love to bloody the Russian nose, but at a cost of starting ww3? No

we can’t let Putin carry on but we have too avoid WW3…..that would be total global devastation with millions of lives too be lost

According to some, we have to be careful about issuing harsher sanctions because it might provoke Russia into escalating things.

Wonder if we've got Gavin Wiliamson lined up to tell them to "shut up and go away"

Why is there no independent news on what is happening? All we hear and see is the Russian and Ukrainian news.

Because it's not THAT big of a difference!

I mean, it's a huge and obvious difference. It becomes extremely tedious discussing this if you can't tell the difference between US and NATO.

If that's not call surrounding then i don't know what is.

So most of them outside of NATO countries and have nothing to do with NATO. The objective of US power projection is protecting and promoting US interests pretty much everywhere. It's European safety. This US base build up is not solely targeted at Russia. Or China, or N.Korea. It's all of that and more. But it still has feck all to do with NATO.

Flipping your argument around. If Russia is already surrounded, the feck is the issue with Ukraine then? It doesn't alter the situation, still "surrouned". And why shouldn't Ukraine be armed if they want to be a sovereign nation?

Make it make sense, Dick.

Things are moving fast. We're basically witnessing a live invasion and reports have to be verified probably.

The world cannot just sit back and watch this happen. People need to move away from ' ah its not near us, it's not our concern' this is very real

What do you want? Western boots on the ground? Direct war between Russia and the US?

Its what always happens. The world abandons the countries under attack out of fear of the aggressor doing something more. Happened in the early 90s with the break up of Yugoslavia. Happening now. Shameful.

What do you mean? BBC, CNN etc.? There is a megathread on r/news, they have links to live feeds.

You want to know the difference?

NATO is NOThing without the US. That's the only difference.

Sums it up perfectly. Protecting US interests.

So why the feck are we all up in arms when another country (aka Russia) does the same?

Sure - let's flip that around again - why shouldn't Cuba have long range missiles if they want to be a sovereign nation?
