Russian invasion of Ukraine | Fewer tweets, more discussion

He might have? Was there ever a discussion about Ukraine joining EU? EU ain’t that big of a problem for Putin. I genuinely believe that he just hates NATO more than anything.

The Maidan and 2014 invasion in response to it were about the EU, not NATO.

Ridiculous to see everyone shattered about attacks happening all over Ukraine. I mean come on, folks have been saying this for a long time as a real possibility and it just goes to show most people were too scared to see the truth in front of them. Now those same people are crying about how NATO isn't doing more.

Sanction the feck out of Belarus. There are also reports Belarusian forces have joined on the ground.

Maidan was a response to Yanukovich choosing the Russian trade deal over European, no?

The annexation of Crimea was done obviously for strategic purposes so Russia could hold on to a warm weather port.

If the US and EU has been preparing Ukraine well with enough intel on Russian plans, it might be a lot harder for Russia than we expect.

Where are all the Ukranian soldiers? All I see are empty streets.

These statements are just so insulting and smug.

During COVID I frequented the CAF for all the invaluable info and opinions. This time round I'm steering clear.

Economic sanctions do a have a limit, at which point you do have to go to war. Not in the conventional sense, but there are actions that can be taken that don't involve conventional weapons or WMDs.

Russia is economically very vulnerable. Their economy is only about the same size as Austealia's. Hit the Oligarcs hard, prevent them from selling debt, ban them from swift and hard overall sanctions and they will hurt badly and soon.

Exactly. We all understand that NATO do not want to get into a direct military conflict against Russia, but taking into account how weak Russia's economy is, proper sanctions will make this war extremely expensive for the agressor.

So basically the opposite is true

Revolting news to wake up to. I guess we all knew the likelihood but these are the actions of a mad man.

Every minute Zelensky remains alive and Ukraine can resist, the more time there is to drag this out and respond.

Unfortunately they have huge gold reserve. They can carry on this operation for a long time..

They can not without sacrificing something else in return. They were not able to use their income efficiently when oil prices wers sky high, it will be much more difficult to sustain this war now. Look at their stock market and national currency, they are in ruins already. If the sanctions are really tough, they are in a really deep sh!t.

Russia is sanction proofed against most of these sanctions which is why they are emboldened to attack Ukraine. They've been setting this up for years and it's just the west looking like they are acting tough.

Problem is, russian money is so embedded into the likes of UK and of course the reliance on Russia for gas for big chunks of Europe, mean that any sanctions will only be met by huge spikes in energy costs along with rising inflation leading to recession. The sanctions won't do as much as people think, they've been sanctioned a lot in the past, it's literally all the west has and Russia has immunised itself against it.
