Rugby world cup

Gutted. They gave everything.

Can't understand why Jones didn't go for the drop goal, but he certainly helped steady the ship when he came on. As for that penalty, that was way out his territory.

I'm a very unhappy but proud Welshman.

Too far??

He had about a minute worth of time to do it with about 7 or 8 minutes left but he bottled it. When Wales got that penalty, he walked away from it.

Even at the very end, what was the point in going through all them phases? They weren't making any yards. What was the point in waiting for a turnover? He should have put everything he had into a drop goal attempt. It was ridiculous that they were just waiting for France to turnover the ball. Roberts was screaming at Jones to get ready for it but he bottled it.

Pussy. And Wales miss the chance of a World cup final because of it.

I'm a Welshman and I'm scared to to kick the ball over the posts.

So this big tough brave rugby player that was just crying after being knocked out of the World Cup.... am I right in thinking he's "brave" and "passionate" while Ronaldo was a "pussy" for doing the same thing?

We nearly beat South Africa and France!

The penalty was near the halfway line. You need someone who drives a penalty kick instead of someone who floats it, which suited the fullback better.

Outrageous decision on the tackle for me

If you sent them off for that they'd be sending em off every fking game - ridiculous

As for the result Jones bottled it immensely - not at the end but in the 72/3rd minutes when they had closeness space and at least five opportunities to get it back to him for an easy drop goal, but he obviously didnt fancy it.

He should have been screaming for it right then it was a a guaranteed 3 points

The sending off maybe ruined the game but Wales should still have won it - apart from the first pen their kicking was dreadful

Jones can drive a penalty. The point is that immediately after Wales were given the penalty, he turned his back without even seeing if Halfpenny wanted it.

Jones didn't want to know. How can you even defend him after watching the last ten minutes of that match? Wales should and could have won. Jones bottled it completely on numerous occasions.

The rules say it was a dangerous tackle. The spear tackle has zero tolerance. He was always going to get sent off, regardless of how harsh it is.

I still think Jones bottled it at the end. He had nothing to lose and everything to gain by taking a kick. Even if he only had a one in ten chance, it's better than no chance.

Read the 3 different scenarios, and scenario 2 is applicable here...he lifts him, and then drops him, so not as bad as driving him into the ground, BUT the penalty is the same...a RED CARD.

Real shame...but despite that, Wales had plenty of opportunities to get the win.

Yep they may be the rules but Ive yet to see one ex world class rugby player say he should have been sent off

It was 'dangerous' play but no malice intended and and Pienaar said he could have got them to look at it before charging in with a decision after two seconds and had he done that he'd have yellowed him

Never a sending off - absolutely never

What a game by the Welsh, great courage shown throughout but yeah - the red card and dreadful kicking proved decisive

Australia vs. New Zealand today.

Come on you Wallabies - go you good things!

I don't rate us a chance, really - but Daniel Carter is out so who knows. Here's hoping.

You never see dump tackles red carded, can't believe he made such a bold and IMO rash decision. You wouldn't have seen Richie Mccaw sent off for that..

Also great quote Pienaar, "Rugby isn't a contact sport, dancing is a contact sport. Rugby is a collision."

Also 2 I don't really care who goes through, I'd just like a good game and whichever one to hammer the French.

This is probably the easiest World Cup New Zealand could of ever dreamed of to host really. It's practically impossible for them to lose it.

I mean Wales as "robbed" finalists. That only happens in weak tournaments.

France is a bit of a bogy team for New Zeeland. The 2 biggest upsets ever in the WC. But let the All Blacks first beat the Ozzie, that will be tough enough.

Don't really know much about Rugby, but why is the WC such a poor playing field? NZ seem far superior to Australia and I saw France play against England, no way they'll beat this NZ side.. no other good teams?

NZ have been the best side in world rugby forever and ever...but for 20+ years, every time the WC comes around, that dominance disappears, and they choke.

But this time around, it looks like they'll break their hoodoo and get across the line. Australia are one of the best teams, but despite that Rugby is way behind some of the other codes in australia, whereas in NZ it is the no.1 sport.

Australia have suffered a couple of injuries to some key players(players that would offer a bit of creativity) and so have looked to their defense to get the job done in this tournament.

Oh and this is pretty typical for the Rugby WC, only a few good countries

South Africa
Australia
New Zealand
England

Ireland - haven't made a semi final in 20 years or something
Wales - their semifinal loss to France was their 1st in 20 years
France - very mercurial
Scotland - shit
Argentina - decent, but never ever going to be a real contender.

I've never understood that. Aussie Rules and Rugby League offer no decent international competitions. Is it just a lack of culture/class?

I'd hardly call such diversity a lack of culture or class.

Sport is very regional in Australia, and as far as I'm aware the only real national sport which is big throughout the country is cricket.

Utterly awesome display from the All Blacks especially the front row - talk about mauling and rucking yardage - fking immense. An object lesson and catching the ball in the air under pressure too everywhere on the field they nailed the aussies especially in the physicallity.

Might be that the Wallabies were fked by their incredible efforts in getting across the line against the South Africans but frankly I can't see any side would have stopped the all blacks today

As for next weeks if France make good selections and play as they did v England they will definitely give them a game, they'll force the All Blacks into a more running game imo which could be a great spectacle.

Although the Kiwis have the class and confidence and should win comfortably this French side are maybe the only side who might upset the applecart.

Although the Welsh were brilliant I suspect they've actually saved themselves from a right beating tbh

The Australian backline let the forwards down massively today. Extremely poor kicking and passing play just brought massive pressure. It was a task to back up two weeks in a row to that sort of shit and we were beaten because of it. Silly mistakes all game from that lot and we paid the price. The only thing that can be taken out of it is that it's a young side. Most of the players are between the age of 22 and 30 with a few old heads in Sharpe and Samo (sp). Plenty of development to go.

I feel really bad for Dan Carter though. One of NZ's best ever players and won't get to enjoy the spoils of the world cup.

Gatland has admitted they considered faking an injury to a prop so they could have uncontested scrums but decided against it on moral grounds.

The IRB are investigating and considering punishment.

Am I the only one that thinks thats a bit mental?

I don't think it was either. My point was by the letter of the law, it was easily interpreted that he could be sent off. I'm not saying I agree with it.

The reffing in this game has been diabolical as well

The reffing was on point. It was to the letter of the law, like it was suppose to be when Lawrence blew you into the semi's in the first place. Even if the ref was shite, it's tit of tat then.

Good post there.

Anyways, coming back to your comments about SA playing dirty rugby. What's your thoughts on some of the 'dirt' Australia were dishing out in the semi vs NZ?
