Rugby Union Discussion - Six Nations Time

Based on his man of the match interview, Duhan van der Merwe still has his Afrikaans accent.

england have gone from playing well and managing to lose, to playing shite and managing to win. gives a young side something to build on.

Yesterday you went back to the playing shit and winning by kicking the leather off the ball shite you had to endure before and during the World Cup. That’s not progress. It’s a backwards step after actually playing some rugby in the November internationals and against Ireland and France.

The ball went backwards but Dupont's game has been shoddy.

Watching Barrassi on the ground something crossed my mind, there is a hole in the rucks rules? The players that is talked on the ground is supposed to release the ball but the tackler is supposed to release the tackled player, so in theory they are both committing a foul at the same time, right?

Not sure, I missed it but I'll see if I can find a video on twitter

It's the typical case where a player is tackled, he is dragged on the ground and you can see that he isn't releasing the ball but no opponent play the ball.

So the two fouls cancel each other out? The ref only blows for a penalty if the attacking player releases the ball, or the tackler releases the attacking player. So long as neither player releases, play continues.

Which is how he referee’d that incident. The penalty he gave was for another Italian player going off feet at the subsequent ruck. He didn’t penalise Barassi or the guy who tackled him.

But that's the thing, cancelling out isn't a thing. And in that situation there is a continuation of fouls from both players, if it's a ruck they are both committing a foul and it's live play they are both committing a foul. My point being that there needs to be an adjustment of the rules, like for example creating a hierarchy.

Keep in mind that beyond the fact that Barassi is supposed to release the ball when he is tackled that rule exists because a player can't play the ball off his feet. While the tackler is supposed to release and he isn't supposed to bind with a player that isn't part of a ruck.
