What a game! I was in the pub with a bunch of French colleagues and totally outnumbered so it was extra sweet.

Got worried after 60 mins when we still hadn't gotten another try. I expected them to cause us serious trouble in the last 20 because their bench is so strong but it was great to see us pin them back and close out the game by keeping the in their end.

And thankfully Barnsy being a prick as usual didn't cost us.

Especially when you consider the XV we had out for that phase of the game.

And Herring never came back, so we can assume he failed the HIA.

He didn’t even need the HIA. You could see he was concussed watching him after the hit. Completely jelly legged and wasn’t even able to pick the ball up when it was at his feet. The idea that there was a “low level of danger” when there’s such clear evidence of a brain injury is disgusting.

I couldn't believe it. I seen the hit in real time and thought to myself that unless it was a fair tackle then Antonio was in big trouble. When it was shown to be high I was sure he was off. About as clear a red card as I've seen under the new rule. Hope Herring is ok. Nice to prove we can win well against a 15 man France but the result doesn't excuse how bad a call it was.

Have to say Scotland looked very good in the second half. Russell is stupidly talented, if he was consistent he'd be one of the best of our time.

Wales are getting battered.
"Scotland played well last week against England but according to you guys they are the best team around aren’t they?" said Biggar somewhat sarcastically.

"We’ll have to see how they go on Saturday, and let's see if they can back it up because the pressure is all on them.

You love to see it.

Mad stat. Apparently today was only the second time in 70+ internationals that a team with Shaun Edwards as a defensive coach has conceded a bonus point try.

Pretty sure the last time was Ireland beating Wales a few years ago! He's a super coach.

Gatland went radical with the forwards and the youngsters fronted up quite well. Now it’s time to do the same with the backs. Biggar, Liam Williams, Halfpenny all should be jettisoned. Frankly all the older players should be binned apart from Ken Owens and Faletau, a reboot is needed even if the World Cup is just months away.

@Pogue Mahone wanted to make sure I was right. Edwards was defence coach of Wales in 2018 when we won the grand slam. The year of that Sexton drop goal against France.

Here's a video to refresh memories (that I had only vague recollections of)

I was at the game so didn’t hear whatever cock and bull nonsense he used to avoid sending Antonio off. How the hell did he justify the yellow?
I have it recorded so I will get back to you on it . It was clear to me though that Barnes did not want to send him off .

He was talking some “ rámheis” about mitigation due to some of the force being on the arm and not the head which was just that, rámheis!

Not sure if it says more about rugby in England or redcafe that England played today and there isn’t a post in this thread :(

feck it, I’ll talk to myself then. England looked better, less errors, basics were better.
Willis looked a complete stud today, so exciting to see him back to his destructive best. Ludlam playing out of his skin as well means Tom Curry may not make it back into this side….completely unthinkable a year or 2 ago.
Lawrence-Slade in the centres was considerably better than playing Faz at 12, surprise surprise. In fact, Lawrence gave more than Tuilagi has for the past 3 years.
England still have a massive way to travel, but I expect them to compete with the stronger sides in a year or so….the talent pool is there, I’ve no doubts.
Italy, after running France so close last week, were a massive disappointment. Flashes of it in the second half but to be 20 odd points down at half time made it meaningless

Feel bad leaving you to talk to yourself after I’ve been fairly active in this thread over the weekend. But I’m afraid I got nothing! Haven’t watched either of your games. Sorry.

Ha. There’s a lot of Irish here. Also, I feel like it’s far more accepted to watch both rugby and football in Ireland.

Having Lawrence in there makes a difference, slightly biased as a Bath fan, but he’s been doing that all season. Personally, I’d rather we went with Smith at 10, but I think that was always going to be unlikely with Borthwick once he’d figured out that Smith/Farrell doesn’t work.

I can’t comment too much more, as I missed the first half with the United game on, and it was pretty obvious England were going to win from then on.

No worries….it’s an Irish-dominated thread but that’s fine by me, I don’t have anywhere near the tribalism I have with football, in fact im just as likely to watch South African schoolboy rugby as I am major internationals :D

If I had to pick one it’d be Faz. Purely down to Smith being a bit light defensively at the very top level….he’s brave enough, just doesn’t have the physicality to stop a big centre or back-rower.
Lawrence has been great in the Prem and it’s good to see him step up to international level. I’d like to see him with Marchant alongside as well, though I rate Slade highly

Ball in play for Ireland vs France: 46 minutes and 10 seconds. More of that please!

Will Barnes have to explain to some higher ups why he didn't see what everyone else saw?

I know what it's like mate. I'm pretty much the only one commenting here when the rugby championship is on.

He fecking certainly should! In this week’s least surprising news, Antonio’s been cited for his assault and will most likely miss France’s games against Scotland and England, after only missing 10 minutes of the game against the team whose player he injured (and feck knows how long Herring will be out for)

Im still shuddering from the impact. The more I look at it the more I am horrified.

Antonio is feckng MASSIVE

It was brutal. The worst thing about it was how you could see Herring’s head torque around the point of impact. That sort of rotational force is the quickest way to get a brain injury. And they had replays from two different angles clearly showing the way his head whipped around. Which is what made it so insane to hear talk of a low level of danger.

Absolutely right.

Its grim, but at least you can be comforted by the fact that the timezones make it quite hard to follow the RC a lot of the time up here.
Even my own hemisphere don’t watch England

He is absurdly large. Just wait till Meafou gets his french citizenship and they’re packing down Meafou and Willemse behind that front row. It’ll be disturbing.

He's a monster.
I was at this game a few weeks back and got the pleasure of seeing him with ball in hand live (Meafou). Genuinely felt a bit nervous for the defenders. Anyway, here’s a clip of him treating Tuilagi like the year 10s treat the year 7s:

 145kg brute force

Yikes. Although the Ireland game really showed that players can be too big. What makes someone like Doris so good is the combination of being big/strong and very very fit. He can contribute at multiple rucks within seconds. In contrast the massive French lads tended to take a wee breather on the ground after making a tackle. It’s not physiologically possible to oxygenate a frame that big as quick as you need in a fast paced rugby match.

I've seen 4 names linked to the vacant Leicester Tigers head coaching role: Vern Cotter, Rassie Erasmus, Michael Cheika and Dan McKellar. I think Rassie's social media use would have made him a hard sell for a coaching gig outside of South Africa but who knows.

True, though I think it’s the ticket against Ireland. As La Rochelle have had success against Leinster in the recent past, have an enormous pack and be hyper-aggressive at the breakdown, make every other ruck a huge fight for the ball, so it slows down the Irish quick-ball multiphase game.
Otherwise Ireland’s attacking play is so polished, and they move the point of contact so cleverly that they can beat anyone in the world when they have free license to quick ball

when he brought Smith on, he moved Farrell to 12. Whats the point? i would have like to see Smith play with Lawrence. Smith is most effective when he has a lump at 12, like he does at Harlequins. reverting to Smith/Farrell demonstrates nothing new.
