Rugby 2018 Discussion

Reap what you sow, Eddie?

Whatever about verbal abuse (he gives out plenty himself), physical abuse is totally out of order.

:nervous:

Reap what you sow? Has he form for aggressive hassling of people he doesn't know outside train stations? And would you say the same if Gavin Hastings got the same grief from some oppo fans after his comments?

They look more like pissed up opportunists than your average rugby fan. Hopefully they picked on the wrong crowd later the same day and got filled in.

On Wednesday, Michael Cheika said he will leave his post as coach of the Wallabies if they fail to win the next World Cup. Rugby Australia would be well advised to look at some successors to Cheika pretty soon. Vern Cotter if they go foreign but i can see Stephen Larkham getting the role.

I don't have an issue with people with grandparents playing for a country, to me that is a clear link (maybe I am biased as so many Irish footballers have used that connection). My issue with nationality in rugby is the players who move to a country to make money as professional athletes and then within 3 (or now 5) years they become eligible internationals, it brings an element of transfers in to international sport. A rule where either you have to be born in a country, have a parent or grandparent from there or lived there for some period as a child before becoming a professional sportsperson would seem fairer.

So we almost agree. I just wonder if Huw Jones, good Scottish name that, doesn’t get paid by Edinburgh and just came back for the honour of playing for Scotland?

Foreign coaches are also taking away opportunity’s for home grown talent. Imagine training for years from an early age, playing County rugby only to be overlooked for some Granny rule guy. I don’t have an issue with people going abroad for the facilities and training, many golfers go to American Universities, but to parachute in players with a tenuous link I dislike. Rugby League players switching codes is wrong too in my view.

Union is becoming more like League , smash up the middle job. Boring. I wonder if Eddie Jones needs a chauffeur?

Jones was born in Edinburgh and has family from Scotland, I have no issue with players getting paid for doing their job but my issue is when that offer of a contract is the first link a player has to a country. As an Ireland fan I find the fact that our union has to authorise transfers for the provinces makes this even worse, they're picking and choosing who they think they might select in a couple of years.

14 straight Kiwi derbies without a win for the Auckland Blues after they suffered a 27-21 loss to the Chiefs at Eden Park.

Horrific behaviour after the Hurricanes first try. Unless the Jaguares improve, i wouldn't mind seeing them dispensed with from super rugby. Considering this is pretty much Argentina's test team, they've stunk the comp out for the two and a bit seasons they've been in the comp.

Bulls maul defence was terrible. Good game of rugby though. Not the best week for the SA sides with the Stormers getting hammered and the Sharks conceding a late score to only draw their game. Cheetahs eeked out a win.

Jaguares need a serious change in attitude. But we've been saying that basically since they got to Super Rugby.

I'm hoping the Reds can exploit that on Saturday.

Not confident as such, because this is always our tough year with trips to Paris and London, even if the 3 home games in succession could be a great opportunity to build momentum if we can get off to a good start in Paris.

I'm happy with the depth we are building. There are two or three good players for both props, locks, probably 3 separate backrows who are all good internationals, really good options at centre and in the back 3. We could be stronger at hooker and while Carberry and McGrath are good players, we wouldn't want to be losing our world class halfbacks either.

What we need to see this six nations, is a real development of our attack. We have the talent and depth now where Joe can't get away with a conservative, safety first approach any more. I'd prefer us to finish 2nd or 3rd but show some real attacking endeavour, than win another championship playing defence and kick chase rugby.

That style is good enough for 6N but as we saw 3 years ago, it won't get you to the latter stages of a world cup and that has to be the end game for this team.

As for the other sides, I'm not as worried as most about England. I think they have real issues in their backrow, especially with Vunipola out. Underhill is a good prospect but Robshaw wouldn't make any of the 3 Irish backrows I mentioned and wouldn't get a look in at a Welsh or Scottish squad either.

Scotland worry me because Townsend will have them playing smart, expansive rugby with absolutely no fear of coming to Dublin for a result. I can see us being full of beans and confidence after good results against France, Italy and Wales and with the whole country whispering about a final day showdown in Twickenham, the Scots come over and put us to the sword.

My prediction:

Scotland (no Grand Slam)
Ireland
England
Wales
France
Italy

Pretty bloody worried about this pre tournament t prediction coming true now.

They're not even whispering about a slam over here. Brian ODriscoll and the boys are shouting it from the rooftops.

I fancy Ireland to beat Scotland thus put huge pressure on England ahead of their match in Paris.

What a game so far! Edge of the seat stuff, both sides playing good open rugby. Would like to see us control this a bit more now and bloody burst a gut to stop these quick lineouts.

Also the amount of bloody injuries we have at the moment, this has been a colossal effort in this 6 nations so far.
