Round of 16 | Switzerland vs Italy | Germany vs Denmark

Spalletti is the main culprit. It's mainly a fitness problem imho.
I understand our players are pretty poor and we're not as good as we were in 2021 but for sure we should be better than them.

Aebischer, Ndoye and Freuler have looked fantastic so far and play for Serie A team Bologna, how it's possible Inter or Juventus players look much shitter.

Our players just don't run and don't press. They all seem dead.

Bologna did almost as well as Juve this season. Fagioli is a poor player

Remember a few years ago everyone was mad for us to sign Scamacca? Is he not just a grumpier Wout Weghorst with tattooos and without the knack of scoring for his country?

Wasn't long ago Italy had all the plaudits attacking other teams from all angles, clubs looking at their players like Spinazzola, 31 years old now so I guess it was a brief peak for a few of them.

And to think if fecking Fulkrug didn't score, we'd be looking like our 1982 side right now smashing the germans :wenger:

I don't think it's possible to lose to this team. I mean they'd have to keep the ball for more than 2 seconds, wouldn't they?

That said, Switzerland has played consistently well this tournament, wont be easy for anyone to handle.

Italian football despite the recovery of the league for the last few years has been relying on a couple of ballers to bail them out for years. Said it at the last Euro's but Chiesa and co. just aren't it.

They're literally Barella, two Cb's, Donnarumma and 7 work horses. It's an even weaker squad than last Euro's, a worse manager. Most of all for a country who used to produce no. 10's like Totti, Del Piero, Baggio you wonder what the hell has happened.

Might be me and my nostalgia talking, but I feel like the quality of quite a few national teams has gone down a lot over the last 10-15 years.

Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Brazil, hell Argentina have multiples squads over the last 25 years with more individual talent than their squad than won the WC. People hype up France, but they aren't a patch on their 98-2000 team either.

W

The Swiss just need a Haaland type of player up top and they will be bossing this tournament. Embolo as great as he is doesn’t offer enough goal scoring threat.

Damn, and they had a better squad then too.
Not sure about that actually, when you factor in Pirlo's injury

The 2016 though remains by far the worst squad we've ever taken to a tournament, in terms of players

Yeah but it's Germany. Seeing that is about the only thing that could get them out of this panic and play to their ability. Beyond their ability, even

Also let's face it, the majority of the time we played each other in tournaments, you guys ended up not looking much better than this either. You needed penalties against Buffon-Barzagli-Bonucci-Chiellini and 7 relegation-level players ffs

fecking dire from the holders.

We really should have beaten them in the last euros ffs.
Not this again, I've seen similar sentiments from comments about beating Croatia in the 2018 World Cup. 3 years isn't that long ago but the current Italy team is very different from the 2021 Italy team who was on a mission under Mancini to win it all. But then again, I understand your point. That loss was singlehandedly down to Southgate. England had scored so early and he shouldn't have sit back.

If there's anyone who shouldn't joke about how shit the Italian team is, it's us. I still remember having to go through the tension of a penalty shootout against that crap 2016 team, after conceding a stupid penalty and Schweinsteiger missing the winning penalty.

Even the penalty that eventually won it went under Buffon, who could've easily saved it.

I can see how much you're holding on to this and it would be cruel to take it from you.

Lack of awareness by Italy. Couldn’t account for man running through on goal, and it paid off for Switzerland.

Nobody from Italy comes out of that half with any credit, and they can't just bank on their defence now. Will be watching the second half with interest.

Only one international goal so he can’t even touch Wout

That back 3 of Akanji, Schar and Rodriguez is quietly superb. They’re all good defenders and have enough pace to push up with a high line.

From there, they’re all excellent on the ball, capable of playing really incisive passes through the lines.

It gives them so many options, and with a hard working and efficient midfield 4, lets them dictate what happens to the ball for large spells.

Early days , but 40/1 after the draw was a cracking price on Switzerland . E/w to get to the final pays good money

Better record for Atalanta last season than Hojlund had the season before. £90m bid probably incoming from United later this summer.

I think Tonali is actually a huge miss for Italy as well. We have no one in the midfield who wants to get on the ball and run forward with it. Calafiori has shown a willingness to do that from the back in the group stage, so obviously a big miss there. Without players like that, if youre going to rely on passing out, you need to be able string more than 3 passes together

Calafiori is a huge miss indeed
