He needs to go, not good enough anymore. Why not go to china and get paid 20-30 million pounds a year for the next 3 seasons. Yep, it would cost us less to pay him off and be shot of him than if we paid him anyway and had to give him minutes on the pitch where he basically reduces us to 10 men.

I was surprised to see this news that he wants to stay and fight for his place. But if that's what he wants to do, fair enough, he is going into it with his eyes wide open so there will be no surprises if he doesnt make the team, he took it with humility last season so no reason to expect different next. He says he is going to work his arse off over the summer and be super fit for the start of the season, which kind of begs the question why was he not doing that in previous seasons? But yeah, if he can fight his way back into the team on merit, good on him. If he ends up wasting another one of the few years he has left in him sitting on the bench rather than actually playing it will be kind of sad, but if the guy doesnt like the idea of moving to the US or China then that's his choice.
