Rooney - Wants to stay next season

He doesn't care which club he is at he just wants the money - which is fine - but he'll also have to accept being treated in the manner he is.

Well, assuming he stays, I honestly don't think that would be a problem.

He didn't cause a stir when he was dropped. And Mourinho hasn't been questioned by Rooney's supposed mates in the media for dropping him either – there was a minimum of noise that didn't even emerge until well after he was dropped, and it died down almost immediately.

The general media narrative is not that Rooney has been horribly treated by Mourinho – and said narrative won't gain any traction now. It would have to be modified considerably, at least, to include elements the media haven't introduced thus far (in the past, Rooney friendly pundits have simply pretended that he's still the bollocks, basically – they can't do that anymore, and they know it).

In fact, if I were to make a bold prediction, I'd say it's more likely that Rooney himself will come under scrutiny if he ends up as a highly paid spectator at United. Not least if Mourinho gets it right next season, and our results improve.

I honestly don't think he's lost his hunger, I think he's just a very proud man in denial. He probably really believes that he can just lose that few pounds, reinvent his game slightly, and get that goal off his arse that starts the 20 game scoring spree that proves to the world that he still has "it"... and head into the Summer of 2018 to finally be a crucial, deciding player at a big international tournament.

Basically, he's a bit delusional.
I think this is very much the case. He's such a big fish, almost untouchable. He's probably getting told Mourinho left him out because they heard the medical said he had a head ache or something, and then they loop these excuses on every match day.

It's really a tragedy what happened to him. He's lost pretty much all of his close control and can't get past his man. His shot has been gone for the past 8 years or so. Btw, why did new never utilize more of that?

There are some values left though. He's pretty good at counter attacks when clever solutions are needed. Knows exactly where to go and when to deliver the ball. He works perfect with players who have a high football intelligence. Free kicks are also pretty awesome.

If he stays he's basically admitting that he's well aware of how shite he now is and he'd rather pick up a good cheque while he can.

Mourinho surprised everyone with how brutally he cut Rooney out last season. He's not going to suddenly bring him back in after finishing 6th in the league - he needs improvements, not hasbeens.

What can you say? People change. His priorities have changed. He has won everything. He has the record as well. He will need to work twice as hard for a smaller salary if he moves to Everton. At this point in his career, why do that when you can sit and earn 300k per week?

Because he probably has 2 seasons left, likes to play football, trains all week to stay in fit shape (by his standards), and it's what he defines himself as?
He'll have enough years as "ex footballer" to enjoy whatever he likes, and will already have more money than he can sensibly spend

He's living the dream, getting paid to do virtually nothing at the best club in the world.

Lord knows if that had been my life since I was 14, training every day, the banter etc I'd have a breakdown if that was over.

I'd rather stay just to train and have fun.

Either he'll return as a performing player which would be good for United (which also won't be happening as he is finished) and either he'll be a last resort bench player. Looks like he just wants to keep earn his wages and do feck all.

Why not leaving as a hero with the fans in his back? Giving it a go in the US and still earn more money than he could ever spend in his life? Gerrard, Beckham etc. they did the right thing.
Admitting to be shit and still stying here while taking away future opportunities for the club (#10 shirt, 300kpw, ...) is such a shitty attitude. I love this man but if he really plans to stay here for another season rotting on the bench and getting fat, all i ever admired and loved about him will be gone. A hero now, a clown from august on, if he is still here.

This.

Plus Rooney is an honorable man, I'm sure he is willing to take a huge paycut due to not being able to justify 300k a week.

with incoming signings he would likely have even less gametime aswell. May not even make the squads

Are we really surprised? No club in their right mind are gonna pay his wages. Don't get the anger towards him either, would any of you take a significant pay-cut from your job? Even if it meant you were doing sweet f*ck all in your current job?

To sum it up:

No need to worry about him being played at the expense of more deserving parties. Mourinho won't allow that. And if he does, he's nuts or incompetent or blackmailed – in which case we've far bigger problems than Rooney on our hands.

The money is what it is. We gave him the contract and can probably afford to pay it in full without this seriously cramping our style. Selling him without a) him taking a pay cut or b) us effectively subsidizing the buying club – is simply extremely unrealistic, and not something anyone involved can be blamed all that much for: It's a situation we got ourselves in by being too generous with his last contract – a feck up, but what can you do, water under the bridge, etc.

For his own sake, I hope he leaves. It would be far more dignified than hanging around as a joke. But we can't force him to do that, so it's really up to him.

Damn, this was the only transfer I was excited about this summer.

If opinions on caf mean anything, he has been hated for almost 4-5 years now. I dont think many consider him to be a hero. Even his breaking of record got the reactions "So thats it, now feck off"

I'm not a fan of Rooney at all but I really can't understand how anyone can be angry or surprised at Rooney over this. He clearly has no other clubs offering him this sort of money and we are the ones that offered him his current contract. Why would he leave?

If you had a contract on huge wages at your current employer and they informed you they wanted you to leave but your only options were to go to a much smaller company with much less pay or stay at your current job, do nothing, and keep making an exorbitant amount of money - I know what pretty much any sane human would do...

For some people the whole Love Of Football thing might be a factor. Wanting to play. Wanting to prove himself and get back into the England squad. That kind of thing. Some people might take the view he has a lot of money already and his time left in football is short.

But yeah, for him it's obviously not about that.

Last year was a fairly poor season's work, playing at the start of the season, but it was very quickly clear he wasn't up to it, a couple of comedy assists (who can forget that farcical uncontrolled ricochet assist for Ibra to nod in!), a tiny handful of goals, barely getting a look in for months, and only featuring heavily again when we basically needed bodies to fulfil fixtures and rest players!

He surely cannot believe next season would be anything but a squad role, and not in a useful one like, say Robson's at 37 in the 94/95 title winning squad, when back then you only rotated say 15/16 players all season.
He was injured for half the season to be fair to him. Otherwise he was regularly in the squad.

Its not really a normal job though is it, i dont have a stadium people full of people chanting my name and buying my merch when i hand in a project.

Saying that ive never regarded him as a united fan or believed he cares much so I'm not surprised. I think people forget he's just a heavily paid mercenary, anyone who had deluded themselves otherwise sadly might see it now

The irony is indeed delicious! Twice in the past, he wanted to leave and United fans practically went down before him on their knees pleading not to. Now he wants to stay, the fans can't believe their bad luck!

I wouldn't be at all surprised if he stays now. If he does, he's virtually giving up on the World Cup. Rooney's contract extension has been Moyes' most lasting legacy at the club.

Rooney loves the club and wants to stay. Fair play to him. From what Mourinho and the players say, he is great to have in and around the club. Players look up to him. Even if he doesn't play much next season, he'll still be important to our squad, in my opinion.

The fact that he's back in training shows that he is at least willing to work his arse off and get fit. May not change anything, but to show that type of hunger (cue silly joke), after winning everything and having such a long and successful career, is good to see.

If he doesn't stay, due to wanting to play regular football, then I respect his decision.

If he sees out that final year of his ridiculous contract without getting a look in it will be the most undignified end to a footballing career at the top level.
Your name might give you a clue to another one.

I get your point but still, trying to move to City and then Chelsea should've been a pretty big hint to most people that he wasn't here for his love for United. He's not Giggs or Gary Neville so I'm not sure why anyone expected him to behave like them.

I think he's given up on that and is willing to sit on the bench.
i'll say it again. The man has lost his hunger.
if he stays he has lost his pride and self respect

I think this is just an element of Rooney saving face.... I'm sure he would have felt he'd have had a few offers

quite sad really for a great player to become so unwanted

why do people still think this happened?

he stated many times he never wanted to leave for city or chelsea. in fact he said he only would have joined a club abroad.

He's already lost his pride and self respect.

He has nothing else left to lose, except of course £300k/week.

We should open up legal proceedings against Moyes over how that contract was ever given. The mind boggles.

What? As in one of the most professional players on the planet, liked by pretty much the whole footballing community? Funny.

Hopefully he manages to stay off the drink this season, cut out the casinos too please

Point is that BFS, fully aware of his decline and the fact that his days as a Bayern regular were well and truly numbered, joined United for one last payday.

Some would argue that with Rooney staying on to see out his contract, knowing his playtime will be severley reduced even more so than the previous season, he is basically putting his paycheque above all else.

To be fair would you blame him?
