I think Rooney is a better striker than no.10 would rather just put Rooney up top. Whether that means leaving Mata at no.10 or bringing in another midfielder for more solidity is another debate. Though saying that, I think a Rooney - Falcao partnership could work.
Agree but lets be honest.
LVG not going to drop RVP or Falco,
Until Mata put some magical performance again Chelsea I think the only place for Rooney is in no. 10 role.

Rooney & Falcao - would love to see this with AdM behind

Not only do we miss Rooney for his goals and assists (RvP has a terrible return for the minutes he's played), we also miss him for his good understanding that he's already developed with Herrera and ADM. He might have a poor touch sometimes but he helps our play in the final 3rd a lot by having a better understanding wth our fellow forwards than Mata has.

I'm very excited to see Rooney and Falcao play together. For some reason I think it can be our first striker partnership in a while that works well. Falcao is good in the air and good at bringing the others into play and a splendid finisher. Rooney just behind him with Adm somewhere should do well.

I need to get over it but Falcao Rooney and Welbeck would have had pace power technique and work rate in abundance. Enough to scare any team in the world we could have defended from the front. Instead Mata and RVP are poor defensively and their work rate is poor. Obviously quality players but I think the 3 I mentioned earlier would cause more damage on teams.

Those three could have been incredible.
They could break at speed, but also get close to each other and play through teams who sit deeper. Hernandez would fit in more seamlessly off the bench too.

Nothing wrong with wondering what it could have been like. Add Kagawa to the mix (I know, I know), and I'd have loved to see what they could produce.

Right now it's a mix of forward players who all demand a start, all play in different ways, and suit different approaches.

I'm a fan of pace and power and that 3 had it all with amazing qualities that were different. Welbeck running power Falcao predator Rooney's touch of genius. Plus when losing the ball the clising down from the front would have been awesome that was a big factor that was often over looked when it was Rooney Tevez and Ronaldo. Plus with a midfield 3 to choose from ADM Herrera Valencia Carrick Blind Mata I think we could have matched anyone in Europe when firing. We still could but I think RVP and Mata are currently square pegs in round holes just now and we are suffering overall with them in the team (great players that they are)!

Well I hope the 27% enjoyed their little break from Rooney that made them happy.
United didn't.

Have we done any worse without him than we did with him?
I might have missed something.
1 win and 2 draws? We definitely lacked that killer punch going forward and the extra muscle in the middle that Rooney provides. Last weeks game was exactly the type that Rooney so often won for us, would have made a difference today as well potentially.

Thank feck he's back, though it'll be hard at the Etihad with or without Rooney. We're always shite against City.

Team performance wise we really weren't any worse without him.

 that's about all I muster, potentially.
Whatever the feck that is supposed to mean.

Well LVG gave Mata his opportunity to prove himself and he did not take advantage of it so no-one can complain with Rooney waltzing back into the first 11.

As in we would have had somebody always getting involved and making an impact, and somebody who does more then his own share of defensive work playing, rather then Mata who can't be arsed to do anything defensively, and going forward has hardly done anything. He was decent today I thought but against Everton and West Brom we basically played with 10 men, 9 men even considering how little Van Persie did in them.

The thing is we do not need 10 players running 30-40 yards back defending. That is the real problem, Mata with the right players behind him would be effective. Does DI Maria track back?
Its about getting the right balance and that will come with time.
Rooney is a very good player but I doubt he would have made a huge difference in any of the 3 games he missed.

No, but you can't be carrying so many players defensively as we have been. They don't need to be tracking back 30-40 yards, but they have to do their bit, whether its with pressing the defenders, or keeping shape, or holding on to the ball well to relieve pressure, etc. Mata is weak physically and slow so just doesn't do any of that really. Extremely talented, but gets marked out of the game far too often. Di Maria isn't great defensively but he presses the opposition and can use his pace to make a difference even when he isn't playing that well. And Mata isn't on Di Maria's level anyways going forwards so unfortunately for him I can't see him staying in the starting 11 when you have Rooney who scores more, assists more, does more defensively, is our captain and generally just works a lot harder.

Other than the lay off to di Maria against Everton mata hasn't done much, I think Rooney would have done more in the three games so we have missed him, it will be an easy decision for LVG to put him back in the team.

Welcome back Wazza! Roll the red carpet out for him!

Would have much preferred him to Mata today.
Agree with this. Can't wait for him to come back.
Mata can have no complaints if Rooney replaces him in the team now because he hasn't done anything to make the spot his own in Rooney's absence.

Can't wait for him to be back. If we can get Falcao fit and Di Maria firing, a draw away to City isn't impossible.

Mata's been ineffective because RVP's been ineffective. If Falcao or Rooney had started today, there'd have been much more going on in front of Mata for him to pick out. He should stay in the side and RVP should drop out for Falcao/Rooney.

Then it's up to LVG to decide whether to stick with Januzaj or go back to playing two strikers in front of Mata. Against City, I'd opt for the former; important to keep Zabaleta and Kolarov/Clichy busy.

The way City are playing at the moment, a win isn't impossible either. They look rattled. If we go at them hard and fast we can take advantage of that.

The problem with Mata is that usually there isn’t much in front of him, as he stays ahead of play most of the time. Much closer to a striker than playmaker, however you understand it, and his stats prove that.

Can't wait! We've missed him, can't help but think we would have been at least two points better off if he had played the last three games!

Said all the way along that we would miss the guy. He's a vital player for us. Sure he has off games, but even in those you sense he could pop up and score or make that pass that leads to a goal. He's a total work horse and no matter what gives 100% to the last second

All players are going to benefit themselves from having him back in the team, can't wait to see him again.

I voted happy with that because I really thought it would give Mata a proper chance to show us what he can do. He hasn't, and we've missed Rooney massively. Glad to have him back.

Hear hear! Looking forward to seeing him rough up City. Hope that red card hasn't softened his temper, we need him angry for this one.

I think Rooney would have made a huge difference yesterday. Mata has been almost padestian these last 3 games - such a shame.
Question is, does LVG go back to the diamond with Rooney behind RVP and Falcao, or play one of those up front with WR behind him? For me, i'd stick with the same formation as the last 2 games as I can see the most improvements with that. I'd play RF with WR behind.

I tell you we bloody missed him, cannot wait to get him back for the city game. 27% can't see that our team misses him greatly when he doesn't play.

Opportunity missed by Mata. Look forward to getting Rooney back in the team.

Another bycicle kick please Wayne!
