Is Rooney done at the required level?

He seems to be getting slower after every game. There is nobody with a worse touch than him bar Fellaini and that includes Smalling and even DDG.

Sir Alex saw it and set Moyes up perfectly to pull the trigger on selling Rooney yet instead Moyes went and pushed for Rooney to get a new contract on ridiculous wages which has made it almost impossible to sell him.

Rooney doesn't even have a position anymore and simply does whatever he fancies regardless of what it does to the other 10 players on the pitch and we're playing a formation that is supposedly suited to getting the best out of Rooney yet it's a formation that means every other player isn't being played to their strengths.

We need to play a 4-3-3 with a ball winner (Schneiderlin), a deep lying playmaker (Carrick) and an all action box to box general (Pogba) with two pacey forwards either side of Ibrahimovic and drop Rooney from the team altogether regardless of him being captain.

Give him another 5 year contract.

It's quite possible he is doing this, but I'd be kind of pissed off if so...because ultimately a top manager needs to make bold, ruthless decisions, and if Mourinho truly believes Rooney's good enough then he should not be playing. I understand the stuff about Rooney's influence but Guardiola's been able to walk into City and give Hart the punt without a moment's notice.
If what happened to Mourinho at Chelsea had happened to Guardiola at Bayern, I reckon he too would have had to be more circumspect about dropping Hart.

I reckon we are dealing with the double whammy of low confidence: ours due to our poor last three years and Mourinho's due to a disastrous last season.

Ferguson's genius was he knew when players were finished no matter how big a player was. He dropped him from some really important games because he knew Rooney was declining. That was 4 years ago.
We keep buying number 10s and neglecting a ball playing cm for some reason and shoehorn him around the first 11 which baffles me to say the least especially with Jose's comments of, "he will never play in midfield for me"
Today he was like another man for Watford.
Absolutely this.

Good post mate

But at least Fellaini has been effective somewhat. He makes the best of his limitations. And he really gives his all - even if he just doesn't have the talent needed for us.

If Jose does not solve the Rooney issue, he will not have success this season. Simple as that. Looks like not even he has the balls to drop him

Bet Mourinho wishes he had managed to buy him at Chelsea now.
With hindsight getting David Luiz for Rooney and cash would not be as bad... And I am not rating David Luiz at all.

The greatest manager of all time tried to shunt him out in 2013 and this was after a season where he fecking scored 34 goals! That says it all

Our problems run deeper than Rooney (as seen against Feyenoord) but he certainly is not a top class player anymore. Hasn't been for a while in truth.

Not a Man Utd fan, not even English. Just an honest opinion but people will say he has an agenda.

Out of interest, how many years has Rooney left on his contract and what is he paid each year? I'm sure I heard a rumour he's on £300k per week?

David Moyes few lasting lingers of his legacy still remain, signing fellaini, and giving rooney a new contract that we stuck with this guy and some how all 3 managers have no problems playing him, which resulted 2 of the 3 losing their jobs. I thought first 3 games yes rooney starting to show something, a few assists in our goals, scoring, yes maybe, but? its just like last year to the point we are liked a cursed club blair witch style, that every player signed comes into the club is doomed. But reality is? you need 11 players on the field, and when one or 2 are technically all over the place and their past it, the team is not going to function. We also seem to have some obsession of fielding very slow players, rooney, mata, zlaten, fellaini, all in one team, what this team needs is more mobile players who are not past it. Once again when guys like Pogba in the centre of the pitch have besides him guys like rooney and fellaini, who have no craft creativity and positional wise to get the best out of him. Like many have said, fellaini is not a CM, rooney is proven he is not even a football player anymore, unless we solve the anchor man position and the no10 we are going into games feel like we playing with 9 men, hell the RB position needs addressing. Unless Jose wakes up and realises we must play 433 and drop rooney, when there is herrera, morgan, mata who all could play in the no6 and no10 positions, we playing inferior players. The amount of money we have spent on players, you want to buy out rooney's contract and let him go, because we carrying this guy to the point where its almost cost us a PL title and its not even october yet

Bringing up Feyenoord game, people should know we made a huge change in selection. There are quite many players who only played their first official game together. Those players not gel as well in their first game together is understandable and excusable. We lost due to am error by the lineman while the game is pretty much stalemate.

This game though, we look lost and worse than Watford for most part having worst player of both team on our side. For someone who doesn't travel midweek to be the slowest player on field come weekend...

The problem is bigger than just Rooney. We lost to Feyenoord playing without Rooney in the side.

I think he has a clause in his contract. I thought it was shite but I think it's the truth now.

No other explanation.
I've started to seriously think the same to, just because there are not any other excuses left why both Van Gaal and Mourinho won't stop playing him.

Daily Telegraph said:
Rashford is genuine trouble for an opposition defence. Which is not something that can be said for the hapless Wayne Rooney, who was once again about as mobile and effective as an oak wardrobe.
...

To quote myself...

In short we were bad vs Feyenoord, but we were worse vs Watford. To quote another poster: Rooney is not the only problem, but is the biggest one

The Feyenoord game had nothing to do with Rooney but he is our biggest problem right now, he looks out of place and shoehorning a player that just doesn't cut it is our biggest problem. Will we still have issues when he's finally removed? Of course but then we can tackle those head on.

Saying he isn't a top class player anymore isn't even telling the whole story. He's a fecking pub player that would be shown up in the championship at this point.

Hard to motivate your troop if your squad leader is performing like crap.

Oh how I wish our stupid press people would say something like that!

Rooney had 12 goals in SAF last season, RVP had 26

I know, but the pushing out started towards the end of that 12/13 season. Remember when he got moved off to the LW in that Madrid game and then eventually benched in the 2nd leg

3 years. Goes to 2019. We'd owe him around £40M I think if we cancelled his contract. Don't know if any penalties and such are included - it could be more.
