In terms of revenue and fans worldwide, we are. We might not be the best, far from it, but we are still, along with Madrid, the biggest name in football imo.
Hard to say how many fans we really have. The club has claimed '659 million' on many occasions, almost 1/10th of the world's population. Can't imagine that's correct. And good thing that survey was done before the Moyes/LVG years

The 24-year-old striker is set to sign for United for an initial £75m, despite former club Chelsea matching the bid.

"It's a club that is hungry to win the league again, to be dominant in the world again," Lukaku told ESPN, who say they spoke to him after his medical.

"It's the sort of opportunity I've always wanted since a child."

Lukaku is in the United States and was arrested in Los Angeles last week following a noise complaint. He is due to appear in court on 2 October.

The transfer for him, initially reported by BBC Sport on Thursday, is believed to include £15m in add-ons.

Yes they did!

So, it's £60m plus £15m add ons?

Why do people still moan about the transfer fee's? Just get over it.

He'll be fantastic for us. What a spine of a team Jose is assembling here.

Bailly Lindelof

Pogba (New CM?)

No it's clearly £75m upfront (hence the use of the word initial) plus a further £15m in add ons. It's beyond cringey seeing united fans do all sorts of mathematical gymnastics to lower the fee.
It's £90m and we pay 50% of first year's wages (this may or may not be made public)

'Initial 75m' clearly implies the addons come on top of that.

Depends what the add-ons are. Everton still owe us money for Schneiderlin, we just gave them Rooney and we could relieve them of £7.5m of the transfer fee for Keane.

If it's £75m + keep the outstanding Schneiderlin and Keane money (£15m) plus Rooney (invented valuation of £10m) then they're hardly add-ons.

The clubs do, of course. The clubs can decide to value rooney £100 trillion gazillions if they want to
That's the thing. It seems like Everton are briefing the press that he's being valued at 15m (or I've even seen 25m). Whereas we seem to be briefing them that he's a freebie. Which one actually seems more accurate based on the situation (especially if we are paying some of his wages)? I'd say the latter.

He'll be a good player for you and score plenty. Morata was more of a risk.

I am happy he was the one you went for though. This is mourinho doubling down on his preferred style of play and putting a definite ceiling on the kind of football you'll be playing.

I reckon he'll get around the same number of goals Zlatan got but the rest of the team are going to find it harder to get going without Zlatan in there. He didn't set the world alight with his overall play but it's still streets ahead of what lukaku offers. I don't think working the channels now and then will compensate for that.

I don't. He looks more like a footballer now. Can take him more serious when he doesn't look like a weed smoker.

feck me, I hope you're never in any kind of managerial, supervisory, policing or recruitment position in any job ever. What a dumb post, shocking stuff.

There are sure addons no doubt, what's the problem ? I don't think the club will find a problem paying 10 or 15m one year later to Everton for that addons. We paid one addon for Martial one year after he joined us.

It's really not that complicated folks the transfer value ks £75m, with the potential to rise to £90m.

I'm of the opinion that we'd have let Rooney move on a free to Everton regardless of Lukaku. He's become a legend at the club and it's the least we could do.

Hope the club announce it soon, sucks if you want to be productive and have to check the thread every now and then

Also means he's been successful if we're having to pay these addons

This is all based on the mistaken assumption that Martial, Rashford, Mkhi, Mata and Pogba will all post mediocre numbers again. We just need one of the supporting cast to really turn up to support Lukaku and we will be right up there again. Its not like we desperately need Zlatan's link up play when we have Pogba, Mata and Mkhitaryan to do that, Lukaku needs to do what he does best - be in position to score tap in, headers and run in behind to stretch play.

 Reguardless they owe us money or not its the valuation of the player which is agreed on the paper that counts.

Technically, BBC says "it is believed to include" so we aren't really sure if the add-ons are even a thing

Also means he's been successful if we're having to pay these addons
And if your chief striker is a huge success with the defense we have we will win trophies for sure. There is none better than Woodward in monetizing on pitch success. It will all add up.

How it's misplaced loyalty, or how it's our biggest problem? I'm going to assume it's the former, and it's misplaced because your employer going around breaking the rules is hardly behaviour which should be encouraged, or do you think otherwise? The thought that he owes the club something because they blatantly disregarded rules regarding transfers (no less) and recruitment on numerous occasions is ridiculous.

The fact that he decided to reward a bunch of crooks for breaking the rules and getting caught is completely misguided loyalty, and the fact that he chose that over joining us (which I can only assume was more or less a done deal) is enough to make me hope we don't go back in for him. The main reason is, as I stated, that we can't afford to go a year without a high quality player like him, so we should aim to fill the place we reserved for him with someone else, if at all possible.
His teammates didn't break the rules. His manager and coaches didn't break the rules. The fans that have been cheering him on for the last few years didn't break the rules. Those are who he feels loyalty to. It was some relatively faceless bean counters who broke the rules.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying we should definitely be going back in for Griezmann next season. If Mourinho has somebody else in mind that is almost as good that we can get now, then Griezmann misses out. That was the risk he took. However, if Mourinho feels he's good enough to be worth waiting for, then we'll all be waiting for him with open arms next season. Personally I feel the latter is more likely, but it's certainly not a sure thing.

Hurry up and announce it, I need to cut my grass. This checking on social media every few minutes, is not very productive for me!:D

I think it will be announced when the team touch base in LA. I believe we fly from UK about 13:30 (I read that somewhere). So, we won't get to LA till about 11pm, UK time? Please, anyone feel free to correct me on all this?!

The addons usually mean that Lukaku has to make 100 league appearaces, score 100 goals or win the Ballon'Dor in his time here.

This won't be paid till 3 seasons later, if ever.

Besides when did we get so uptight about how much the add ons are? Is that ever a factor when reporting a transfer fee? Was Ronaldo's move really just £80 million? Was Bale's move only £85 million? Who the heck knows?

People need to relax about the total fee and just realize the fact that how strong financially united have become via the new found marketing model even at the lowest in footballing sense after decades and enjoy the power and the new era under mourinho.

Who cares about the fee, it was widely reported that Chelsea matched the bid, and Lukaku picked us ahead of the current PL Champions. That sums up United's power

Maybe. "we just need a few players to get better", whilst not an unreasonable assumption, is still a somewhat hopeful assertion. I don't get the vibe from mourinho that this is all in the cards when it comes to attacking players though.

Maybe a few of them are going to benefit from a more direct style of play but I think you're moving towards a similar setup of Rafas Liverpool. Solid defence with two top attackers having to shoulder the majority burden of getting more than one point from the game whilst the team secures the clean sheet and try their best to set the stage for the two main guys to do the business.

Not saying it's a doomed strategy, but I think you will be be a team looking to score decisive goals rather than plenty of goals. And I am not sure how well you will cope when plan A is not working.

I don't think working the channels now and then will compensate for that.

Well, we'll see. The issue with Zlatan was that he dropped too deep when we were struggling to get a foothold in the game, this allowed the opposition to step up and press us in further and we had to play multiple passes to get anyone to penetrate the back line.

Having a vertical threat at the focal point of the attack will be huge in forcing the opposition back line to sit deeper and creating space in between the midfield and defence. Often we dropped points by sitting back from winning positions and allowing the other team to have the ball and the attacking impetus and trusting that we will ride it out- having a counter threat will improve our chances of that happening next year.

i don't think anyone is under the illusion that we will be playing short intricate passes. It will be direct, with longer passing and dribbling/crossing from the wide areas.

I'm guessing the thread has moved on a fair bit, but I went out to Wireless Festival and returned to a huge race debate involving Heskey and Drogba!

Tbh, I think the point is valid, although not malisciously intended. I remember taking issue with the same posters who had admitted they hadn't seen Bailly at this point last summer continually saying 'we need to find a ball playing centre half to play alongside him'. It was clear to me that he obviously just looks like he's a brute with limited technique to some, despite him actually being excellent on the ball. Many other examples too.

Anyway, Rom medical seems all done now, and I imagine we'll have an official announcement today and an unveiling tomorrow.

Romelu Lukaku has admitted he did not think twice about agreeing to join Manchester United when the opportunity arose, describing the Red Devils as the "biggest club in the world".

United announced on Saturday they had reached an agreement with Everton to sign the 24-year-old in a deal understood to be worth an initial £75million.

Lukaku, who has been on holiday in America, is now set to put the finishing touches on the switch and should then be able to link up with Jose Mourinho's side on their pre-season tour of the States.

The Belgium international admits he is grateful to have been given the chance to join United.

He told ESPN: "It's the biggest club in the world. It's a club that's hungry to win the league again, to be dominant in the world again.

"This is the sort of opportunity that I always wanted since I was a child and when they came calling I didn't have to think twice."

What the hell are people waiting for. We've announced we've reached agreement, he's spoken about how happy he is to join.

People take the whole 'won't believe it until he's photographed holding the shirt' line to a ridiculous extent.

Dont think it is that, i just want it announced and seeing him holding the shirt. I just want it officially done and move on from redcafe for a while, now i need to check more often instead of doing some work. We are excited, not nervous about him not coming here or that he wont sign.

I like the fact that he is quoted as saying he is going to need to work harder - that's exactly the kind of ambition I want to see.

Why are people bringing up the deals for Keane and Schneiderlin when this is an entirely separate transfer? None of that will be worked into the add-ons.

And that's £75m.

If we're agreeing to cance those payments on their part (which is essentially our money even though we haven't received it yet) then that's a more certain cost from our point of view then the types of performance/achievement related clauses we were speculating about before, which may or may not have ever been activated.

I woke up yesterday morning to read that the transfer has been agreed. And people were arguing about the fee. Twenty fours later......and people are still arguing about the fee. Who gives a shit?

The obsession football fans have with their club's finances is weird as feck.

Of course it will. Do you not think if a club buys a player from another club who owes them money for other players that this isn't worked into the deal?
