You are sort of overlooking the tiny aspects of United being the biggest club in the country by far with the finest traditions.
A start with a team clearly on the up, under a manager who didn't actually reject him, but instead it was Lukaku's decision to go, and they have a good relationship (check his quotes on Mourinho).
Also look at how Chelsea have only bothered to come in now, when we'd shown the main interest. "Why have you not come in for me before now" to paraphrase Shearer to Fergie.
I wouldn't put too much esteem on the "reigning" champions bit either, not in this current climate where the previous winners have dropped massively in 3 of the last 5 seasons, and it's as competitive in the top 6 as it's ever been.
