Romelu Lukaku | Napoli watch

I thought it has been said many times that OGS prefer other options in the front so it is the best for both parties for him to leave.

Yes, Ole prefers Martial/Rashford upfront but Lukaku also does not want to be here as a Plan B striker. The two things do not have to be mutually exclusive.

He made the right choice not to. He already scored 20 goals this season and rebuilt his reputation. He will always label as a flop/donkey if he stays.

Honestly guys, he’s still terrible. Watch a lot of Inter when I go to my father in laws for dinner on a Sunday as he has a Portuguese satellite and they get all the games from all over Europe.

He still has a poor first touch, still wanders around aimlessly, still tries weird skills that aren’t in his locker and still points at where the ball apparently should go....

difference is, the Inter team he plays in doesn’t need him to do anything other than get on the end of their crosses and through balls which are consistently decent and constant enough to mean he’ll get goals. They are a working unit so much more developed in the basics than Utd are right now.

it was right for us to let him go. If we had two proper wingers, two overlapping fullbacks, Bruno, Pogba and a real DM so those two were largely free to create, then MAYBE he would work here.

I agree. If he stayed he will still be shit for us because he doesn't want to be here with a reduced role. He downed tools last year and would probably have got even fatter this year sitting on the bench for us.

He's gone to Inter, sorted his head and fitness out and he's reaping the benefit of that. We recouped a large part of our initial outlay on him and removed his relatively big wages from our books.

Everybody wins.

When you say rebuilt his reputation..... he's done in the PL.
The Italian league is inferior and no decent Spanish side will ever sign him.

Despite his tallies, there was still a point with us where if you paused it as the ball was passed to him, I'd have bet on him fecking it up every time. Guarantee I'd have been up at the end of the season.

The flip-side of that though Veeva, is that we've now got a striker who loves ball to feet... and he's so much less of a threat than Rom is when you play to his strengths.

His style won't fit Barca or Real Madrid anyway. He is a target man so he is best fit under coach like Mou and Conte. He needs service from wingers. Conte wanted him back in Chelsea, and Lukaku's poor performance in his last year with Man Utd didn't put him off. Lukaku repaid Conte's faith so far this season.

It is a win win situation for all 3 parties involved. The only issue for Man Utd is the board didn't sign a backup striker.

Sure agree with that

Yeah it's not an ideal situation. I much preferred how we played when Martial was with Rashford though, than when Lukaku played.

He's at his best when he can get the ball either behind the defence or on his feet into the box, where he's really good at using his frame to create space to shoot

Crosses are not a good way to use him, he's not particularly good at getting free in the box and doesn't have great intuition and instincts, his movement inside the box isn't great

He's doing well playing with his back to the goal, inter rely on him a lot with that. In general his combination with Lautaro is the basis of Inter's(and indeed Conte's) attacking play and it's been excellent so far

Yeah ditto, though I'm still unconvinced that Rashford is the out and out CF though.

I'd sell Martial now personally - and sign a CF with high energy who can press from the front with Rashford.

Top of the league tonight and also has the scoring record for fastest to 20 goals for Inter

Which is why hes slotted in well at Inter because they are used to Icardi who played in a somewhat similar way. They have to get the ball to him in the box or hes ineffective. Fans know his poor touch slows the team down but Serie A is already slow and as long as the goals are there they will overlook it.

Call me controversial but I think it was stupid selling him with no replacement lined up

To add to the controversy, I don’t think Ighalo is as good as Lukaku. We should have just kept Lukaku another year, or until we eventually do sign a replacement.

If Ighalo can score half the goals Lukaku can we should be happy.
He is just a late panic buy. Hopefully a proper striker comes this summer under a new manager.

If you have a player that wants out, we might as well take the opportunity to offload him. Especially for the price we got for him.

We should definitely have had a replacement lined up, but we sold him too late. Guess the club didn’t want to risk bringing someone in and then having the Lukaku sale fall through. Since it takes us 3 months of negotiating to get our transfers done, regardless of whether we’re buying or selling. We’re just not efficient in the market and it’s causing problems.

Careful now, we don't want crazy controversial opinions like those here.

There’s nothing whatsoever controversial about that, I’ve been banging that drum for months.

Ole alienated Lukaku instantly and judging by our focus in the Summer and reportedly only being interested in Dembele or Mandžukić, added to Martial being given the 9 shirt, he genuinely thought Martial could do it.
It was naive at best and could end up being a monumental feck up that ends up with us in 10th instead of say 4th.

You’ll get loads on here though telling you Lukaku was shit, asking how many did he score last year, slagging off Serie A, telling you Lukaku demanded to leave but completely ignoring Ole’s role in that etc etc.

Fact is, we’d be way better off this season with Lukaku on board an in form.

Nar, better not to alienate said player to start with.
That way you have options to keep the player if you can’t get anyone in, rather than go into the season so light.
I’m convinced Ole thought he was fine with Martial anyway, reports in the Summer and the 9 shirt confirm that. We were only gonna get another back up at best.

Yeah I also think had an ok first season. Not great, but still scored around 25 goals overall.
He dropped near the of it. The Sanchez moved certainly seem to have had a negative impact to our attack.

People got quick to jump on our players back during Mourinhos sack run. I don't think it is easy performing in a toxic environment.
Even though Lukaku was a Mourinho favorite at the time.

I think we'd have been exactly the same. A frustrated, unmotivated player doesn't improve the team. He didn't want to play with us anymore and we sold him as best we could.

Because not replacing him was a mistake doesn't mean selling him was too. He had a massively detrimental effect on our overall play even when he was scoring. We needed to get him out of the team without a doubt.

What a bunch of clowns we have. i live in South Africa and am fortunate to watch Serie A every week. People on here giving an inaccurate opinion on Lukaku. He is a beast in the league and plays with his back to goal and sometimes pops up on the left. Hold up play is awesome, bringing team mates into the game. His first touch is still not the best. Do yourself a favor and watch the games before you comment. Lukaku is proof that if you are coached the right way you will get the best out of him.

Ole pushed him out of the club do not get it twisted.

I'm curious if you have any proof to back up this rather serious claim, because Lukaku has always spoke very highly of him.

Take it a few more weeks under Ole and we might get. Sanchez might be better than Rashford and Martial combined.
Mourinho was right to bring him in ;).

This place

What happened to all the posts saying what a donkey he is? He's scoring and seems to be enjoying his football, good luck to the guy.

He wasn't what we needed and it was clear that he wanted to leave even though he was played often by Ole, scored against fodder like Palace and Southampton but had a poor record against the top teams.

Is it a stick to beat him with? Shouldn't be as we knew what we were buying. Now he's doing well it seems to be polarising opinions on here.

Lukaku was shit and his head wasn't here and that was before Ole came on board, his form was utter wank under Jose as well. He is thriving in Serie A and at Inter because they are playing to his strengths which is play the ball in the channel for him to run onto. Ole doesn't want to play that way which he is entitled to, Jose wanted the ball played into his feet which was never his strength.

Getting rid of an out of shape, couldn't give a shit Lukaku was the absolute right thing to do. Not having a replacement agreed before or after the sale is incompetence of the highest order.

There are different opinions about every player in our team. Don't think there is anyone that everyone agree is amazing and should be first choice with years to come.
Rashford maybe now, but I remember people slating him too. He has many flaws too.

We let go players like Ronaldo because they want to leave. So how he does there is irrelevant. Good for him and you guys have to move on, its like some bad break up with some of you.

Which is why hes slotted in well at Inter because they are used to Icardi who played in a somewhat similar way.
Not really? Icardi and Lukaku play nothing alike and Inter play and attack nothing alike last season

They have to get the ball to him in the box or hes ineffective.
Not really, he's generally very involved in the build up.

Besides, he's a striker. Of course he needs to get the ball in the box to score, like every other striker ever

Fans know his poor touch slows the team down but Serie A is already slow and as long as the goals are there they will overlook it.
For every poor touch there's a good one. The way this place zeroed in on that and started making it up as if everytime he got the ball outside the box was a turnover makes no sense to me
