Will he ever get that hat trick?
Pretty much everyone who had seen Lukaku at Everton, Chelsea and WBA could tell you, put the ball in front of him and he’ll do damage. He is not a target man. Ball put in front of him twice tonight and he has two goals. Hopefully the penny has dropped with the players and the manager.
This is the type of striker he is, not a target man.
Yeah he certainly at times this season has had decent hold up play. On average tho to get the best out of him it’s putting the ball in front of him be it down the channels or just him running on to something. I personally wanted him because I’ve seen him make those runs before. He creates space which for me is something Zlatan didn’t do so I was hoping him doing that would bring out the best of Martial and Miki operating behind him. That was certainly my impression before he came here, and at the start of the season. But there have been lots of games where his hold up play has generally been excellent. His passing in the final third is generally pretty clever and incisive. And there's a level of selflessness there that I definitely wouldn't have expected to see. Today his hold up play was great I thought.
Everything he does looks inelegant all of the time and clumsy much of the time, but he's got more to his game than goals. If anything I've been less impressed with his goalscoring than his all round play. He doesn't have any real capacity to score a goal out of nothing and he is definitely a confidence player in front of goal.
To me it looks like he's trying too hard and putting too much pressure on himself. A good world cup with Belgium after a 30 goal season in his first year at United could alleviate that massively and see him reach a new level next year.
He would never have been my first choice but I'm surprised people are so harsh on him here. He's certainly been good enough.
Dont want to sound like i am slagging him off but seems he deals with things better if you try to play football with him then if you hoof it and expect to hold it every single time, specially if long ball isnt precise.
In what way could anyone construe that as being critical?
Played well but looks rather heavy to me.
Thing is, we don't have a Beckham to provide as many goals for him.Rom has been the one player actually doing his job recently. Even against Newcastle he was running the channels, making through balls and so on. Glad to see us play to his strengths for once with the early forward balls. We need to do much, much more of that though. Still too much dawdling in possession from the other 10 players for my liking. We need to play to Rom like we used to play to Ruud.
