There's some real promise for the big guy. Always a goal scorer but I'm seeing a different side to his game come to the fore and long may that continue.

Woeful today. He isn't helped by our defenders hoofing the long ball too much but there was alot of times Lukaku was receiving the ball and it was then creating an attack for them as he lost control of it. Really needs to improve his touch and movement.

Actually thought he showed some improvement in link-up, especially in first half. Did very well for our 1st and 3rd goal, though that miss was shocking. He doesn't really trust his right foot at all.

There is no way I would bench him for Arsenal.

Surprised he is getting so much criticism. Did not score but was involved in two of thee first three goals and created space for the fourth. So he did contribute. Needs a goal though.

For a player who allegedly can do nothing other than score tap-ins he’s racking up the assists nicely. He does need to score again soon but he played well tonight and the criticism he’s getting is well over the top, no doubt fuelled by butt-hurt Morata fan-boys.

Bit confused by those saying his link up play was poor tonight. Was involved in 2 goals and nearly created a couple more. Saying that, he deserves criticism for his finishing tonight. Not worried about that though, it will come

It’s not falling for him right now but he’s not hiding which is the main thing.

Still working really hard and he got 2 assists, that touch for martials goal was really underrated.

Yes he needs to find his scoring boots, it’ll happen. Was close with a few nice shots today, let’s hope he can end it against arsenal.

For the record, his PL goals are more evenly distributed between right and left foot than any other striker at a top club (maybe at any club?)

Probably his best game in things other than goalscoring and people are still slating his non goalscoring attributes.

Basically, Lukaku has to win every physical duel, have a perfect touch every time, make the perfect pass every time or he's shite.

Huh? It'd be good if he was even able to hold the ball up once. Look at the trouble troy deeney caused our defenders. Lukaku is like a feather in comparison.

That miss was pretty woeful, there's not getting away from it.

I don't know what to make of him at the moment. He's playing like somebody who's seemingly low on confidence (evidenced by some of the misses he's had recently), but his overall game isn't that bad.

He goes on some nice runs, he's working extremely hard, some of his layoffs and through balls are working well but he's blowing a lot of his chances when in on goal.

I'm sure he'll come out of this little blip fine, though.

Didn't know that and it's a little bit surprising tbh. Have a feeling he always sets up for a left foot finish like today.

Don't have much problem with his performance. That miss is what clouds many people judgment.

I think I'm probably his biggest 'hater' on the caf but apart from that comical miss, today was one of his better games with the ball but ultimately still not good enough.

He owes Lingard drinks for a year for potentially saving his ass tonight.

He should have buried that chance for sure, but to say our capitulation would have been his fault is a bit rich. 3 goals to the good, you don’t expect to throw away a lead in that position.

It’s a random fact that stuck with me. Read it when we signed him. Apparently an almost perfect distribution between right foot, left foot and head. Might have changed since. Probably slightly skewed to headers now.

What was the second assist? Fairly sure he only had one?

His best all round game and his pass completion rate was 58%? Only De Gea had a lower rate of every player involved, on both teams.

He had a good first half today but so much of his game is so crude, when he is bad he is really bad.

He played well tonight.

Deserves stick for the miss. That's his bread and butter.

"He's just not confident. He just needs to get it back. We can't drop him because it'll affect his confidence."

If his mental strength is so weak that he can't respond positively to a well-deserved recall to the bench then he will never become the player some here are hoping. Mental strength is everything.

I said it the other day, he is being treated differently to other players who are being dropped when under-performing. We have this fixation on playing him always because no one can lead the line, so to speak. Rigidly, we play in a way that limits us to requiring a target man and when that target man isn't playing well we're stuck with him. City don't play with a target man, and because of that they can have Aguero, Jesus or a number of like-minded players "leading the line", without requiring anything like the specific set of physical skills Lukaku has. Rashford can't play central instead of Lukaku in this set-up, nor can Martial. Only Zlatan can and that is down to the rigidity of the system we're playing, which makes someone like Lukaku, no matter how he's performing, undroppable.

Nah, he's very two footed. It's just a general confidence issue.

He was good in general play. Should have scored though. He will knock in a few some day. Haters gona hate.

As mentioned in the match thread, he will not find an easier match than this... and he just doesn’t seem to give his all. Doesn’t give 100% and doesn’t make enough runs for our players to exploit. I am certainly not Zlatan’s biggest fan anymore given he’s old and rusty, but do you remember all those passes from Pogba over the line to him last year? Those looked so easy, but it was also because Zlatan made the good runs behind.... it never happens with Lukaku, he is way too stationary and easy to read.

Everyone can miss a chance and everyone can miss an open goal like he did today, but would you bet against Aguero, Lewandowski, Ronaldo or Kane in that situation? That is what’s needed I’m afraid... to reach the level we want to be at. For me, the worst thing today was not his miss - but that pass in the end to Zlatan on the right... just incredibly bad and without any touch or feel whatsoever. That’s where he needs to be better... basic, basic football and technique.

If he was playing at home against Watford it will be an easier match straight away.

Mixed bag, involved in goals 1 and 3 but was sloppy at times with his touches and missed a sitter that could have killed off any fightback.

People keep saying he got two assists tonight. Did I miss something?

Not really an assist, but for the freekick goal he dropped the shoulder and played a good pass to Lingard, who then passed it and a player (Young?) was fouled.

His holdup play is a bit worrying atm.

There are literally 10 games easier than this at least since Watford will most likely finish in the top half of the table. But logic isn't the strong point when you have an agenda :D

You're right, just checked EPL only: 19 headers, right foot 26, left foot 47.

Genuinely had a sense he much prefers to take it to the left, but it's probably more being a case of him thinking too much in front of goal atm.

I have always been a big fan of Lukaku and was chuffed when we signed him, but he needs to pull his finger out.

He has been poor for about a month now, not just because if his lack of goals, but his overall play.

Another very good bit of play but “not really an assist” was the turn and pass to Lingard before he set up Young for his first goal.

Also that perfectly weighted through ball to Jesse which he chipped over and the cross which the same player almost tapped in at the far post.

For a striker that has people worried about his all-round contribution he sure as shit contributes a lot more than hanging around waiting for tap-ins.

His crosses are generally quite good as well.

For some reason he look like he lost a bit of confidence. I really think that he should not drop deep so much and instead expect service and do what he does best as a striker on top. Still he provides to the team even in this state. Hope things loosen for him soon!

I was desperate for him to score towards the end, obviously a bit frustrated he didn't but I was encouraged by his all round performance. Hopefully his next scoring run begins on Saturday and kicks on from there, I still believe he can be a match winner for us on his day.

This forum is a joke. The past few seasons we have been crying out for someone who simply scores. Mourinho goes out and buys someone who does just that and all of a sudden we're complaining that he doesn't do much else aside from scoring. I give up.
No we have not been crying out for someone who can do nothing but finish chances. We had that in Chicharito. Lukaku isn't even very clinical, so we haven't even got what you think people have wanted.

I think he is incredibly shit at playing football, but obviously he's big, strong and fast, and can hit a ball sometimes!
No but I think he's a good player, but would Barca, Bayern and Real for example be interested in him? Not really. Good player, but not great. We're never gonna win Champions League with Lukaku as our main striker, that's for sure.

He had some impressive moments but that was one untidy performance. Gave the ball away cheaply far too often. Complete brain freeze when Rashford handed him an open goal to score.

His current and Ibras run last year are almost identical in their timing. Lucky for us, we have other players chipping in with the goals this season.
