Robin van Persie

They didn't win them someone else did, they just happened to be around see May, Neville.P et al.

Berbatov's goals got us more points than any of our other strikers in a title win. A little more than just being around. Next.

£20m combined for Mertesacker and Gervinho is quite the piece of business too.

My club's players are better than yours. No, mine is. No, mine is. Next.

What we ideally need is some sort of system, a table if you will, whereby we could objectively judge which team is the best.

And then in an even more ideal world, we'd spend the season glued to a second table, second-guessing the first by pricing in disparities arising from the fixture list. Kind of like par, in golf.

 Exactly.

Yeah, and we could create a new website and take that discussion there.
Tell us more.

I've heard he's the best striker in the world, but I don't know enough about him to make such a call. What are all your thoughts?

I've been away for a couple of days, and apparently we actually are in for Van Persie and it's not just paper bollocks? Well, colour me hugely disappointed. If we get him it'll kill an awful lot of my excitement for the season, even if it means we'll almost certainly win the league.

I'm glad this thread has turned into a cock waving exercise, there was far too much Van Persie talk for my liking.

If one cannot wave ones cock like a silly bugger during silly season then all hope is truly lost.

Sorry, what?

I'm sorry you think it laughable to prefer Manchester United's first choice striker be a local lad that came through the ranks rather than an ageing world class striker we've pinched from another huge club due to that player's greed. Personally, I think it's what any United fan should prefer, but I guess I'm weird like that.

I'm probably Welbeck's biggest fan, but if he's good enough, he'll get game time. Not that I think we'll sign Van Persie mind.

But both Danny, Chicha and others have time on their side. Plus, they could learn from RVP's forward-play.

I too would be hugely disappointed if SAF were to combine arguably the Premier League's best striker in Robin Van Persie with arguably the Premier League's best striker Wayne Rooney to create what would be perhaps the most devastating upfront duo in world football. I just can't think of anything worse. Poor Hernandez :(

He's not ready yet.

you really think this is happening Steve?

I don't think we will break the bank for him...which means he will go to City.

not bothered either way.

we need one more quality midfielder. That is what will decide if we win back the title.

Greed to win trophies?

No idea, mate. Of course, Wenger/Arsenal could decide to accept a cheaper offer from Juve, no matter what we bid.

He just spent the season as our first choice CF, only being dropped on the rare occasions in which we made a tactical change. If we sign Van Persie, he'll take Danny's place. I wouldn't be surprised if Fergie showing so little faith in him encouraged him to leave.

I take pride in this football club's way of doing things, and I take huge pride in those rare times when Mancunian footballers make themselves part of our first team. I don't want us to be like City, and signing Van Persie would be incredibly City-like, hence their being our main competition for the signing.

I'm not sure. If Berbatov leaves as expected, then Rooney/Welbeck/Hernandez seems to be one short of Fergie's customary four-striker squad.

Is there anyone on this board who wishes in 1995 we'd signed, say, Effenberg, and left Scholesy to rot on the bench?

Sometimes you need to buy in experience to cover what you're about to lose. You can't just say there you go kid, go do it by yourself with noone to learn from.

It looks like we're about to lose Berbatov and Owen, we need another striker. Welbeck doesn't need to play every game in the season to develop or be our number 2 striker. He isn't ready yet. He needs to learn from the best and develop gradually.

With Kagawa on board we'll probably switch to 4231 in which case we'll have Kagawa to play behind the striker with Rooney up front, backed up with Hernandez and Welbeck. Rooney will drop deep to replace Kagawa from time to time with either Hernandez or Welbeck playing up front. We have just enough players, Kagawa's arrival has protected us from any negative effects of Berbatov's potential departure.

If Amos had had a season in which he was our first choice keeper throughout, and had acquitted himself very well for such a young player, and had then started for England at a major international tournament and been one of the very best young players at that tournament, then yeah, I would have been disappointed with us signing De Gea.

As it is, you've attempted to rebut my argument that our first choice CF shouldn't be replaced by invoking the goalkeeping equivalent of Joshua King. Are you mentally deficient, or was there some elaborate joke you had in mind?
