Robin van Persie

If Van Persie's maths are as bad as Pete's then Arsenal could afford him yet.

Say what? That maths doesn't make any sense at all.
His uplift in wages is £2M/year plus his signing on fee of £5M. So we get another year at an effective discount of £7M set against a transfer fee of £12M. Simples.

RVP will leave this summer, for all Wenger's madness I don't think he'd make that stupid mistake of losing him for free and keeping an unhappy player

That's ridiculous. The cost of keeping him is what you pay him plus any loss of a transfer fee.

Same as Rooney didn't want to play for you. They end up doing it anyway if paid off or held to contract - see Modric.

We get another year for £7M less than we would have done if he signed the contract or we take the £12M - a £5M differential. Not worth it.

Him signing a contract is no longer part of any equation. That is not the potential cost of keeping him for a year. You could make £12m plus save whatever his current wage is. That will be how much it costs.

But you're just taking two numbers that don't really relate to each other and subtract one from the other. It doesn't work like that. You don't get another year for £7M less as opposed to a £12M fee, you get another year for whatever it is you'll now actually pay him + the potential transfer fee.

The only way to calculate what it will cost you is to see how much more money you'll have a year from now if you sell him now as opposed to if you keep him and let him go on a free.

Screw the mathematics. You're club captain is fed up and wants out and you don't have the financial will/muscle to convince him otherwise. Better to bite the bullet and get rid rather than risk having an unhappy, half arsed player spearheading your league campaign and possibly corroding the dressing room.

Pete's silly maths aside there is an argument for Arsenal trying to keep him. If he's the difference between qualifying for the Champions League and not then letting him go for a smallish fee now isn't the best option.

If he was forced to stay he'd surely want to play well to ensure that he got a good deal from a top team when his contract is up.

No - you're ignoring the value of having him for a year and the costs that would have been incurred if he signed the new contract.

I think we can easily afford to write off that figure too. It's not like we're Wigan or Fulham and desperate for 7 million quid.

Maybe Arsenal's thinking is this: we won't let him go for less than CL-qualification would earn us.

Sidenote, why does he want to leave where he is captain of the club and the star player of the team?

Money, trophies or just getting sick of Wenger's bullshit?

He'd probably decide his destination months before the season ends. You'd have him playing post January with absolutely no motivation. Not to mention potential fan back clash if he agreed to join United/City. Sure, he could be professional and give it his all, but it could easily go the other way.

All comes down to the old dilemma of if you want an unhappy player at your club.

He is coming to the final years of his career and wants to win silverware IMO. That and a whopping contract to boot.

I'm not exactly convinced that losing RvP makes us massively weaker. Don't get me wrong, it's not good, but we do have two very good new signings in Giroud and Poldi. We also have the Walcott option. I don't see a huge drop-off in goals scored with that sort of attack.

Same schtick as Rooney then? He was shut by being paid up, RvP will be shut up by being held to his contract.

He was quietened by the money, he was shut up by winning trophies

Neither do you have to offer, its not that you will hold him to his contract if it comes to it. He'll hold you to a free transfer

I would actually gain some respect for le arse if they made him stick to his contract. These players are all to happy to sign when it means a whopping pay rise, but ask them to stick to THEIR side of the deal......and its tantrum time.

Sounds like the title of a Jeffrey Archer "novel"

I don't remember Rooney winning any trophies between kicking up a fuss and being bought off. If we hold van Persie to his last year we effectively get it for a loss of £5M if Wenger considers that worthwhile.

I can't decide whether you are on a wind up or have the maths skills of a yoghurt....anyway he will go this summer because he wants to leave and Wenger has already bought his replacment. Wengers posturing is to increase the price which will not rise above £15m for a player of 29 with his injury record.

Great player but not for United IMHO.

If he signed a new contract, you would be able to get a bigger transfer fee than 12 million now - or in 12 months time.

Ignoring this, you're not taking account of the intangible aspects. Your best player and captain signing on would improve morale and improve the attractiveness of the club.

It's both.

Van Persie NEVER said he want to leave Arsenal right now !! Its Arsenal who force him to sign a new contract or leave!!!
