Robin van Persie

Why sell to City and not Utd?

That's what I'd like to know, particularly as Wenger was totally adamant from the start of the Nasri saga that he wouldn't be sold to United.

He was adamant that he wouldn't be sold period. They sold to City instead of us because Nasri wanted to sign for City.

Van Persie's mine: Fergie tells pals he's confident of landing Arsenal ace

Manchester United boss believes RvP will snub interest from neighbours City and Italian champs Juventus and link up with Wayne Rooney

Manchester United believe they have won the £20million race to sign Robin van Persie.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is confident the Arsenal captain will team up with Wayne Rooney to form a formidable strike-force in a rebuilt side he hopes can win back the title.

Howdy pardner: Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie in tandem? Frightening!
Manchester United

Van Persie scored 30 Premier League goals last term to help the Gunners to third in the table, while Rooney struck 27 times for United.

Ferguson is understood to have told footballing friends he believes van Persie will be moving to Old Trafford, despite the interest of money-bags Premier League champions Manchester City and Italian league winners Juventus.

Selling his skipper to Sir Alex would be a huge blow to Gunners boss Arsene Wenger.

It would come 12 months after a summer that saw City buy Samir Nasri and Barcelona purchase then-captain Cesc Fabregas.

But Arsenal have little option but to sell - unless they want to lose van Persie for nothing next summer, as the forward has announced he will not sign a new deal.

Blue it: Ferguson could beat noisy neighbours City to RvP's sgnature

City are committed to off-loading players before sanctioning more big spending and, despite the champions’ vastly *superior financial clout, van Persie is believed to have been most tempted by a move to Old Trafford.

The 28-year-old Holland star was back in training this week after Euro 2012 and with a number of bids already made, Arsenal are keen to decide on his future before leaving on a Far East tour this weekend.

'Ferguson is understood to have told footballing friends...'

He's a very good player but we have other areas in the team which need to be strengthened first. It would be a strange signing considering the options we have upfront plus RVP's wages and injury record.

I think we're all being far too sensible about this. :D Signing RVP would be brilliant.

The following link is one of many confirming that AW refused to sell Nasri to us. For some reason, it seemed he thought that strengthening the world's richest team was perfectly ok though.

I'd imagine he was asked the question about United as we were linked to him at that period and he was just saying he wouldn't sell him. Later on that summer he was saying that he couldn't sell Cesc and Nasri or Arsenal weren't a big club any more. It's just bullshit posturing, I doubt he has as much power as he makes out.

Im certain this article in the Mirror has been put out by RVP's agent to make City panic into offering RVP an extra 50,000 quid a week on top of what they already have offered him! You can be sure to see RVP flat out rejecting Uniteds interest in a few dasy once he gets the extra 50,000 a week he is holding out for

--------------RVP------Welbeck
Nani-------------Rooney-------------Valencia
---------------Kagawa----Carrick

------Evans-------Vidic-------Ferdinand
-----------------De Gea

Does away with the left-back question if nothing else

Is he really going to go for silly money? Why wouldn't anyone just sit tight for a year and scrap for him on a free transfer?

He's already said that he doesn't want to leave. Seems weird.

This whole thing stinks. I don't necessarily expect loyalty, but there is a way to go about your business and not make mugs out of the club that made you a hot property.

Ahh. Fergies been talking to Bob Cass again then?

This is never going to happen.

It really has reached a point that if a rumoured United transfer is either high profile or expensive, no one believes there's any truth to it.

Despite being the same player he is today - 12, 24, 36 months ago RVP would have have been a 'nice to have' based on his performances season by season & injuries but it wouldn't have been a transfer to set the world on fire.

He obviously had a fantastic season last year but he could (and law of averages would say he will) fail to reach those heights again.

I'd have him like a shot but only on our terms. I certainly wouldn't be happy about chucking a fortune at him.

Berbatov out, say 7m.

RvP in, 20m.

Younger, better, it makes sense.

This interest is classic SAF.
if he likes a player, he likes him forever.
Even if he is nearly 30 and will cost a lot given that, he will make sure he's in the hunt now he's going.
Didn't we bid for RVP 3/4 years ago...

feck logic, let's sign him. Fergie needs to steal a star from Arsenal before he retires so I can gloat at my Arsenal supporting friends.

Why didn't they (RvP's reps.) just get Bob Cass to write this. The "has told his friends" line would be taken a lot more seriously.

While I agree with your sentiment, it's a two way street. It can be argued that van Persie's efforts were absolutely pivotal in Arsenal still being a Champions League club. He's done more than his fair share.

Where as signing a Van Persie wouldn't exactly be a bad thing, it'd perhaps mean sacrificing or hindering the progress of someone excellent or potentially special in order to accommodate him. Still, this:

---Rooney----------Van Persie------------Nani---
-------------------Kagawa----------------
-------------Scholes------Carrick-------------

...looks disturbingly good. You've then got to some start giving game time to players of the quality of Giggs, Welbeck, Valencia, Young, Cleverley, Anderson, Hernandez and maybe even another top class signing though, which could prove difficult. We might actually have a bit of luck with injury for once...we're due it.

Do reckon Van Persie would be a bit of a strange signing, and that he's probably going to either suffer a drop in form at some point or just get injured again.

Why would Rooney start ahead of Valencia or Young out wide? He's not very good out wide at all.
