Robin van Persie

Carrick's playing in defence. You cannot draw conclusions from a game where Carrick's playing in defence.

 Carricks played in defence several times. Evans, Smalling, Jones being missing means he has to fill in. None of our midfielders are injured.

Anyone back in the 'we don't need Van Persie' camp after that game?

I don't think there's even been a signing whereby I've been so caught in two minds. I changed my mind about three times during that game alone.

A game in which Carrick - a midfielder - plays in defence cannot be grounds for claiming that Kagawa is not part of the front four (or two). He may be played as part of a two in midfield but that will be only if we have regular central midfielders unavailable.

The main reason Carrick played CB was due to a lack of defensive cover right now, made sense to give him a run out there in a friendly.

What is your point exactly?

Well, I was trying to work out what your point was. Kagawa in midfield today is not indicative of how we're going to line up, especially as Carrick was only really playing there by necessity. It's not a counter-argument against RVP as I'd welcome him, just Ferguson's thinking can't be pre-empted.

What'll actually happen to end this silly debate as that we'll play 4-4-2 or a 4-3-3 or 4-5-1 whenever it suits us. We don't have to stick to one formation.

I've always firmly been in the 'we don't need RVP' camp.

I've been there and back about 20 times now and I still haven't decided whether or not I like it. My thinking now is that this Rooney, Kagawa and Nani business is going to be...the business.... and that signing Van Persie would most likely mean shunting the former two all over the place.

....but it's Van Persie, though. :p

Worst part of Fergie not being at the game is that we won't get any new transfer gossip after the game :(

This saga reminds me a lot of the summer we went for Berbatov and then tried to shoehorn him into the team. There's an argument that you can never have too much firepower and people will point to City's Dzeko, Balotelli, Tevez and Aguero and say we need that kind of depth to compete. Maybe? But after the Berbatov experience I have my doubts.

For me Kagawa should be in the hole and Rooney should play up top unless either is injured. But just like when we splashed out on Berba if we go big for Van Persie we have to play him. That means other players will have to be juggled to make it work and whether or not that causes the side as a whole to function better is something I'm not sold on as yet.

Make no mistake, signing RVP would be a big statement of intent. Truthfully though, muppet aside, I won't be fussed if we didn't get him.

I wouldn't mind seeing:

----------De Gea----------
Rafael---Rio----Vidic---Evra
------Carrick---Cleverley---
Valencia---Kagawa-----Nani
-----------Rooney---------

Personally, I've placed all my muppety desires on this signing. If we don't get him, I will jump into a skip, and so keep my hopes and dreams company. :D

If we get him, then good. I'll support him, just the same with anybody who joins, but I don't think we're desperate for him.

I want to see Kagawa played in the position he should - just behind the striker.

Won't be fussed not getting the player of the year and indeed one of the world's best strikers. Bizarre.

The way I see it, to compete with City's millions and force now we have to slightly abandon our current principles of investing for the future.

RVP would be a phenomenal statement of intent and an incredible investment. I'm beyond caring about resale value and wages when we're spunking so much away in debt repayments and IPO selloffs that barely benefit the club.

Tonight, for me, showed that we don't need him, and just confirmed this as a luxury signing if it happens. I'd much prefer to see:

Valencia-Carrick-Cleverley-Nani
Kagawa
Rooney

with everyone playing in their proper position than trying to shoehorn Van Persie in, while ultimately making someone play out of position. I know, I know, the season is long and there are plenty games, but I honestly would prefer if we didnt get him. Obviously, if we do get him I'll support him 100% and all, but I reckon the money could be better spent elsewhere.

Hardly a luxury signing you cheese-paring bastards - you've only bid £15M. In the immortal words of Arsene - feck right off.

It's a squad game though, one injury to one of our best players and things could be looking different. I thought we looked much better without Hernandez and Young today.

I'm sick of all these freakin transfer sagas, just bid 22 million to get the player instead of faffing about just to save a few million. And then Gill rubs it in our face by saying there is funds well put up or shut up Gill:annoyed:

Peter

We are pulling Fergie's wire

No fecking chance RVP will go to Salford (why would you?...........no decent restaurants in that postcode, unless you like curry sauce with your fat fried chips and don't tell me Cheshire is better.....though Man Zen in Knutsford is good, but who wants Chinese cuisine every night?)

He's not going.........get used to it?
