Robin Van Persie - Were you happy we sold Jaap Stam?

He scored an own goal but he was one of the better player when he came on. Atleast he cared.

Should also have gotten a penalty

The GK could have saved it. He was surprised, but he still looked like he wanted that one to go in instead of saving it. The ball wasnt hard hit or placed, absolutely atrocious from both.

I feel sorry for his situation. It's not nice seeing a terrific player like him so unhappy even if he is being a bit immature

It'll take a brave man to go back to turkey now after tonight. He felt the wrath of the Turkish press and national team last week when he claimed they would slip up in one of their two games. And things couldn't have gone more wrong for him and more right for turkey tonight

The reality is that van Persie is, and was, a dreadful strike partner. Which is why it always baffled me that people saw him becoming some Bergkamp-esque link up man as he 'lost his legs'. He's dreadful at it.

He was great in behind Adebayor when he wasn't injured.

Whatever anyone thinks about Rooney he put far more effort into his game for Moyes than Van Persie . Van Persie seemed to initially give his all for LVG when he arrived but when the team was struggling he just seemed like he couldn`t be arsed or maybe his legs just couldn`t do it anymore .

A lot of the fans here fell for his PR, he was very good at it, saying all the right things.

As a fan I have very little 'response' to how I feel about a player as long as they are mostly delivering on the pitch and don't do/say stupid sh|t, so this is how I sort of saw the situation for RVP (where I'm most giving him benefit of the doubt and my own opinion):

Under Moyes/LVG, Rooney plays no matter what, RVP is pissed off that he doesn't get the same treatment to play into form because he is a superior player (in technique, ability, movement, touch etc) and in actual effective contribution.

And I believe that*. Say what you want about being a professional and putting the effort in etc but if the manager won't give the same level playing field then there's little 'point' in trying harder to prove them wrong. E.g Look at Hernandez (under LVG), Berbatov (under Fergie), Januzaj (under LVG) and probably more I can't think of, all acted 'professionally' and didn't get them back into the team or anywhere notable/had manager's trust.

I know this is going on apologetic levels here but the common theme is Rooney. His form and undroppable status has affected a MASSIVE flux of players and their development here for the past 20-36 months (you could even include Falcao in there).

*If you had to make an educated guess on RVP's past form, his technique and ability, had he been given the same amount of time on the pitch as Rooney, I would bet he would have offered a lot more than whatever Rooney's 'hard work' does.

I understand there needs to be effort but sometimes class always prevails and I absolutely believe RVP's class would have prevailed. Look at his stats so far in Turkey and his games for Netherlands.

I know there are flaws to what I'm saying like attitude affects changing rooms and his style not matching the team etc but basically I'm saying Rooney has been absolutely detrimental to the development of Utd for 2 years strong now.

Nah, I think that's overly harsh on Rooney- and trust me I've given Rooney plenty of stick on here over the last 12 months.

Van Persie played every game he was fit under Moyes to the point where Moyes actually admitted he played him for longer in a game than he originally wanted to because we were losing. He started 18 out of 21 games in the league and the three times he was subbed on it was when he was coming back from injury. Under van Gaal, van Persie played almost every game in the league until he was injured against Swansea in February. Whilst it's fair to say it didn't suit him to play along side Falcao, Rooney was moved all over the place until he got a run in the 9 position in the last few months of the season. His stats in Turkey haven't been that great and having watched him a few times during this qualification his influence on the national team isn't what it was even compared to 18 months ago in the World Cup when his game was on a downward slope.

For what it's worth I think van Persie would have been a decent squad option for us this season and if Ferguson hadn't retired Rooney likely wouldn't even be at the club, but to suggest Wayne's the reason he's not here anymore just isn't true.

Is it true that he was once caught bagging players' boots for the purposes of selling them on while they were out training whilst he was an Arsenal player? Seems unlikely given his earnings, but then again it has been known for a footballer to pinch things (toilet seats, Gucci purses at Harrods, cheese spread) at the same time that they're earning thousands per week.
 No.

The rumour is that that was Adebayor after his last game at Arsenal, but I refuse to believe that either.

This. He must be cursing Fergie's retirement timing every single day.

Wtf was he thinking with that header?

With regards to Fener, I think he left because Van Gaal couldn't guarantee him a starting spot anymore, with Rooney slated to play the season as a 9. Probably the reason why he's so pissed off that he's being dropped over there in Turkey.

If he'd wanted to fight for a first team place, he could have done it in Manchester.

Theo talked about it in his autobiography. All the players would bring in the gear from their sponsors they didn't want, usually horrible, garish shit. van Persie would turn up with a bin bag and take some of it for himself.

Am I missing something here? Isn't that image supposed to be a fake?

Has to be fake. He's absolutely slaughtering him.

Besides, Van Persie has NEVER come across anything like the person described in that image.

I always thought he was quite a lot of a twat, tbf.

''You can take a player out of the Arsenal...

A lot of the fans here fell for his PR, he was very good at it, saying all the right things.

I never really warmed to him, of course I cheered for him as he was our player and I enjoyed watching him the title winning season, but I never felt he was sincere about what he was saying concerning the club.

In any case, he's showing terrible attitude at Fener currently.

I don't know. I think he was genuinely excited to play for us and in particular under Sir Alex. It must be hugely frustrating for him to then find out he's retiring. For footballers it's a job and at that moment he had enough money so was probably joining us to win stuff, when he felt that opportunity was taken away from him he probably was hugely demotivated afterwards. Compare his attitude under Fergie to Moyes and even LVG (and now at Fenerbache) and it's nowhere near as positive. People may say it's unprofessional and that's fair enough but for these lot it's their job. If my boss left tomorrow and was replaced by someone who came across as incompetent then I don't think I'd be dead up for coming in to work and giving it my all probably.

I don't think it's particularly fair to call him a twat etc either, no one knows the circumstances. He's moved to a new country and in the last few years has gone from a premier league winner (and the best player in that team), having a very good World Cup to sitting on the bench in Turkey and scoring own goals like this...I doubt he's going to walk around laughing and joking every 5 minutes.

Yes I'm fairly sure they are, but Lord knows I'm not reading Theo's book to find out. I meant to edit and say that this is the basis of the story but the site crashed and I forgot.

It's fake.

Too good for turkey anyway. I guess sitting on the bench is better in Spain.

Would be an odd move for Barcelona. RVP doesn't really press defenders nor does he make those runs to stretch the defense anymore.

Anyways, it's sad to see how RVP has declined. I thought he'd still be at a top level as he'd age, but boy was I wrong. We definitely sold at the right time.

We'll still have the 2012-2013 season though. He was amazing that season :D

What a bullet. I still think he isnt hat bad, scores some goals at least even if his allround game lacks.

That bad? He is without any effort still the best striker we had/have before we bought Martial. And would have been the logical back-up striker for Martial if it wasn't for inside politics.

I agree and I've said it in this thread before, if we played good/fast enough or in a system where he would be in AND around the penalty box, he is still one of the best strikers in the world for me imo. Technique, first touch, intelligence, movement and most importantly of all goal scoring ability/awareness. It may just be paper talk but it wouldn't surprise me if Barcalona did go for him. Look at what Larsson did for them.
