He still gets labelled as injury prone which is something I don't understand tbh.

He was pretty much injured for 6-7 years straight at Arsenal, playing 20-30 games a season. No wonder people are reserved.

An injury prone player doesn't play all 56 PL matches in a row. It's a hard label to get rid of

Was just gunna say that.

I must admit those stats surprise me. I still think of him as an injury prone striker. I guess, as you said, that label is difficult to shake.

He's at United now. Injuries will happen. It's the United way unfortunately.

I don't think its worth starting a new thread, but purely based on ability where does everyone rate van Persie as a striker compared to others of the Ferguson era?

Purely based on ability Rooney and Van Persie are the best I've seen.

In general, I rate RVN as the best.

His injury proneness is only emphaised when he sustains good form and has a big role in whatever team he plays for.

I seem to recall the season Adebayor scored 30 goals, Van Persie played something like 10 league games. And started several games on the bench. Nothing was said about that.

Him & Rooney up top, connecting the way they've been lately (or even to a better extent) should make this a very interesting season :)

Still not getting involved much to my liking, but he's still delivering the goals which probably is the main thing. We tend to look to Scholes or Rooney who will then pin a 25 yard pass to one of our wingmen, perhaps Robin needs to demand the ball more often. He's more than capable of putting a through ball at the edge of the penalty area if he's not in the box himself

He was everywhere last game. A lot of our play was going through him. I dont want him to come too deep anyways.

He doesn't only want RVP to fail, he wants him to get injured.Big difference between the two mindsets

Well getting injured is another form of failing :D

Seriously though like Excal said I think he's joking. I just found it funny more than malicious.

Think of a peter as a lil' puppy with a bark louder than his bite and all is good, he might actually come off funnier that way!!

When Hargreaves went to City I wanted him to be injured too. It's quite natural. Whenever Van Persie does get injured you can be sure we'll get all sorts of opposition fans laughing and doing the "told you so" routine.

In fairness, there was no need for hope with him.

For you maybe but I'm not sure not for most ( I hope so anyway). Being an opposition fan doesn't force one into thinking like a brick. It's pathetic IMHO and even unhealthy

When you're best player and captain jumps ship to one of your rivals, are you going to be all magnanimous and wish him all the best? Heck no, you're going to wish he fails miserably.

Jesus that's a bit harsh...Fergie told him we were done with him. So he was free to go anywhere he wanted. He decided to go for the club with the best resources.

I didn't want him scoring a last minute winner at OT, but wish injury :nono:

You don't have to go from one extreme (wishing injury) to another (wishing him well) you know .... That's a very stupid way of thinking

He fails but not that he gets seriously injured! Serious injury could mean end of a career.

What is wrong with you?

I disagree specifically with this part. For me this is exactly what football is all about, one of the main roles it plays in society. It is a game that is taken very seriously and used as a proxy for man's tribal instincts. It is all about "them" and "us". It is a place to channel your irrational hatred in a relatively safe and harmless way. When we are watching or just thinking about football we can feel and say things we wouldnt usually feel or say.

OK sometimes it spills over and there are still limits - see Kick Racism Out of Football. And it is good that there are limits. But does it really matter if Pete jokes that he wants RVP to get injured? I would say not. Even if he is not joking, even if he hopes upon all hope that he gets a career ending injury: so what? It doesnt make it any more likely to happen.

When Pete is done thinking about Man United and Arsenal, he can get back to his rational self and continue to be a good boyfriend / husband / father / neighbour / friend and all-round upstanding member of the community. I'd be lying if I said I have never thought irrational and ugly things about footballers from "enemy" teams. In the cold light of day, do I wish them or their families any harm? Of course not. But in the context of football, as proxy war or tribalism, I allow myself that irrational indulgence, without ever allowing it to spill into actions.

Football is just a vessel for channeling the uglier - but still natural - primal instincts people have. It is potentially dangerous because it can spill into racism, offensive chanting, violence etc, and that is all wrong. So it needs to be monitored, clearly that is why these ugly things happen around football. But I think it is better to have a place for it to be vented than to suppress it altogether, because these things will come out. I think of it like a social safety valve for these kinds of emotions and that kind of behaviour.

Massive tangent, anyway, Ill stop now.
