I disagree specifically with this part. For me this is exactly what football is all about, one of the main roles it plays in society. It is a game that is taken very seriously and used as a proxy for man's tribal instincts. It is all about "them" and "us". It is a place to channel your irrational hatred in a relatively safe and harmless way. When we are watching or just thinking about football we can feel and say things we wouldnt usually feel or say.

OK sometimes it spills over and there are still limits - see Kick Racism Out of Football. And it is good that there are limits. But does it really matter if Pete jokes that he wants RVP to get injured? I would say not. Even if he is not joking, even if he hopes upon all hope that he gets a career ending injury: so what? It doesnt make it any more likely to happen.

When Pete is done thinking about Man United and Arsenal, he can get back to his rational self and continue to be a good boyfriend / husband / father / neighbour / friend and all-round upstanding member of the community. I'd be lying if I said I have never thought irrational and ugly things about footballers from "enemy" teams. In the cold light of day, do I wish them or their families any harm? Of course not. But in the context of football, as proxy war or tribalism, I allow myself that irrational indulgence, without ever allowing it to spill into actions.

Football is just a vessel for channeling the uglier - but still natural - primal instincts people have. It is potentially dangerous because it can spill into racism, offensive chanting, violence etc, and that is all wrong. So it needs to be monitored, clearly that is why these ugly things happen around football. But I think it is better to have a place for it to be vented than to suppress it altogether, because these things will come out. I think of it like a social safety valve for these kinds of emotions and that kind of behaviour.

Massive tangent, anyway, Ill stop now.

I'm glad to know I don't have the same psychological issues as you and yet still enjoys football for what it is.A "vessel for channeling the uglier " :wenger:, it's as if you're talking about pedophiles who are doing their best to suppress their sick urges

Whatever.

I am looking at it from a societal, anthropological perspective. Of course it does not mean the same thing to everyone. But when you have crowds chanting, people "hating" their rival teams - Liverpool, Leeds, City, whatever - this is what is going on. It is all based in human tribal instincts. Or that is what I think.

I haven't even wished injury on Tevez (though I have occasionally been slightly annoyed how he glides through the season with no non-golfing-related set-backs whatsoever) despite all that has happened there, but I also doubt Peter's post was 100% serious.

When Hargreaves went to City I wanted him to be injured too. It's quite natural. Whenever Van Persie does get injured you can be sure we'll get all sorts of opposition fans laughing and doing the "told you so" routine.

Who?

I can see what you're saying. In "techie" terms, you're saying people use certain apps of their personality in various areas of their life. Hence, the demonstration of monitored tribal behavior in football.

Once again, Hargreaves went to City, that's quite a difference. Were you livid with Silvestre when he went to Arsenal?

I know Van Persie was their star man and was becoming a bit of iconic feature but still, their 'only' true problem is that he showed an ambition for glory in a bigger and better club. The whole stuff about rivalry is all bollocks.

You can't compare Silvestre to van Persie in fairness.

I'd liken it to Ronaldo moving to Madrid for us for Arsenal fans.

From an Arsenal point of view I'd say it's worse than Ronaldo to Madrid. At least Madrid aren't in the same league and direct competition against United.

It would be like Rooney moving to Arsenal, or Torres actually going to Chelsea. Or I suppose Tevez going to City, apart from the fact Tevez was never our main man.

United fans still have a lot of love for Ronaldo, I don't know if the same can be said about Arsenal fans and RVP.

Then again only deluded Arsenal fans still think that their team is good enough to be in competition against United :smirk:
It's like the gooners live in this fantasy world where they're competing for trophies vs United/City/Chelsea

Most fans are a bit bitter if they let go of their best player - we would be / were too. However, you also have to move on - I'm happy we got him, he's a brilliant player

Harsh!

I still desperately wanted the poor sod to get his career back. I didn't want him to be a success at Citeh, but wishing injury on a player after all he'd been through.... that's pretty fecking twisted.

I certainly didn't! I was quite pleased when he scored his goal for City, the relief on his face when he scored it, was a nice sight. Such a shame it didn't work out.

A sidenote, but how good was some of the interplay between RvP and Rooney yesterday?

Off the top of my head, his one-two with Rooney which culminated with van Persie almost laying one on the plate for Hernandez was breathtaking, and he had a fantastic interchange with Rooney in the second half around the cenre circle that made me just marvel at their awareness and speed of thought.

He's actually going to be what Berbatov was supposed to be, isn't he? The perfect, goalscoring foil to Rooney, who'll also lift the team to another level offensively through his all-round game.

Must be weird for him to be playing in a team where more then one other player can actually head a ball...

It's nice to see his full ability been utilised. Arsenal just turned him into a total goalscorer but seeing as we actually have other players who can score goals, we're not as reliant on him in that aspect.

He's noticeably getting better each game he plays for us. Exciting times.

I like how when he drops deep to get the ball he almost always looks for a forward pass.

He's certainly worth the cash we paid for him. When we were two nil down yesterday I was a bit worried and then I thought "if he can carry Arsenal for a whole season, then he can help us out a lot more".

I have to say he has been really good for me these last few games. He is so much more involved in the build up. For me he has been better than I thought he would be. TBF these last few games his finishing has been a bit off.

Very true. He's also not shy when getting stuck in and will actually try and go past a player.

Top drawer!

I don't really recall him missing any of the proper chances he's actually had?

Yesterday itself he missed a chance(probably a couple of chances) which you would normally him expect to take, should've atleast hit the target.

And he looks like quite a rough player too.

I think when he first came to the PL he was a lot more fiery. He got a red card in one of his first few matches (I think) and Wenger was going ballistic at him, something along the lines of "what did I just tell you?!".

He still has a bit of a mean streak in him and you could see that in the last CL game. He doesn't back away from people trying to square up to him and he will get his revenge if he sees someone else being rough.

To be honest I think we need some of that grit and determination from more of our players at times.

One journo last night described his first touch as like a brick hitting a bag of sand. Thought that was a perfect description.

I can't agree with that part of your otherwise good post - City and ourselves have a local rivalry that makes it an entirely different move that Tevez made; he was a big enough player that that move was a betrayal.

Ourselves and Arsenal aren't anything like that - our main rivalry came a decade ago when the league was at its best before Roman changed it forever, and as personal as things got between the teams I don't think the rivalry can be compared to United v. City, or Arsenal v. Spurs. Those are on another level altogether, and players moving between those clubs are rightfully hated by their old clubs, such is their nature IMO.

I had this conversation this summer with Arsenal fans, and actually they considered it was very similar to Tevez going to City. I think we don't really see Arsenal as main rivals as they haven't competed for trophies for a few years now, but on their side, they still see us as the team of Roy Keane and those gritty, tough games. Some fans (probably not the historic fans, more the fans that started supporting Arsenal in the last 15 years) see us as at least as much, if not more, of a rival than Tottenham for example.

I didn't quite understand why Arsenal fans went so over the top with this transfer, but I didn't quite realize they had this amount of animosity for us.

I think for Arsenal fans it is quite comparable to the Tevez City move. They see themselves as title contenders every season and selling your best players to title rivals sticks in the throat almost as much as selling to your most hated rivals. From their perspective, a club like Arsenal should not be selling their best players to their rivals, so it serves as confirmation of their limitations. Its like a glass ceiling on their aspiration that seems to be getting lower and lower with every sale they make to the Manchester clubs, threatening to crush them into oblivion.

Selling RVP to us was just being realistic, something Arsenal fans tend to have trouble doing. We havent been their rivals for a while now, its not like they'd have been selling RVP or Nasri before that to Spurs. Thats different.

Our two best strikers are both mentalists... :devil:Rooney and RvP are both dirty as hell, and definitely won't take a step back in handing out retribution for slights real or imagined.

Yes but sometimes having reality imposed on you is as bad as anything else. It is the football equivalent of walking up to a former Beauty Queen who is well into her 40s, with quite notably saggy tits, and telling her she looks a bit like your gran.

His first touch is fantastic.

Also, for someone without exceptional pace, he sure likes to just burst away from tackles and drive up the tempo in our game.

Like I said yesterday: Everything Berbatov should've been.

Both Rooney and Van Persie are massively intimidating to defenders, their ability alongside their dirtiness will worry all defences

Better than waking up with a couple of whores.

I think he's getting better with each game, he started out scoring vital goals for us but now we are seeing the full class of his game, such a majestiuc player to watch.

I don't think there was any doubt about his quality. He really is top class. It's just whether he can continue to stay fit. I doubt I'm the only one who cringes every time he's roughed up a bit of the pitch.
