"He called me up and said other clubs were in for him, but because I played for two of them, United and Juventus, he wanted to hear my thoughts about them," he is quoted by the Daily Telegraph.

"So we spoke for five minutes about Juventus and 55 minutes about United.

:lol::lol:

Was one of those that didnt really think we needed Van Persie at the time,

However, it seems like Cantona in his profesionalism he is Fergie's kind of player...

Quote-Arsene Wenger

“Every move he makes, every gesture, he tries to do it to perfection.

“You can call him at 10 o’clock at night, you won’t find him in a nightclub.

“He’s either watching a football match, a video or preparing himself for the next match.”

I have been surprised by just how professional the guy is. His attitude seems A1 and he has looked delighted to be here from day one.

When you compare Van Persie and Kagawa to the credentials of Eden Hazard i think we got the best deal.

Not just saying that because Hazard chose Chel$ea, just the way he pimped himself out then disrepected all the clubs involved by playing wait to see who i have chosen.

... as opposed to Van Persie who made it quite clear from the outset that he was going to come to us, and didnt string City and Juve along at all, you mean?
Absaloutely, i have my red blinkers on :wenger:

Having said that i'm not sure how in the hunt City actually were, Juve were for sure but Van Persie wanted United and obviously Weger didnt.

Well if his (RvP's) words are to be believed than the moment he knew United were in for him and he called VdS his mind was made up, and the reason why we got him is because he wanted to come here, not Juve or City.
Which is quite something considering our rivalry with Arsenal.

Not quiet like Hazard playing "I have yet to decide whether it will be the Blue or Red of Manchester??? Oh wait something interesting has come along that has nothing to do with money... i want to play for the European champions"

Van Persie has more class than Hazard for sure. But he is more mature, less caught up in his own hype.

I am sure if Van Persie had signed for Juve he would be playing up how much he always wanted to play for them. In fact, as I remember it, at the start we were told Italy was his preferred destination, no?

Hang on, pass those red-tinted specs again....

All our players are really cool, loyal, cut-them-they-bleed-United heroes. And everyone who chooses to go elsewhere is a twat.

Phew, that's better.

To me it looked like Mancini was certainly interested but he had a massive problem of tryin to make space for him in the squad, and he clearly couldnt add him to the ranks unless he shifted someone like Dzeko or possibly even Tevez.

Mancini publicly confirmed his interest.
Either van Persie didnt want to go or Mancini never got the money to make the move.

It's obvious Mancini was frustrated this summer, he wanted to buy more players, but at the same time found it very hard to get rid of some of those already on their books, that's why City brought in pretty much every one of their recruits on deadline day.

Robin van Persie is the kind of player you rarely meet in your life: an exception, the very definition of the word. He has everything a coach dreams to have in a single player: he's smart, classy, clever when he moves, has killer-instinct, and is focused during 90 minutes.
He has a deep love for football. He watches matches at home, analysing everything. It's so rare for a single player to have such a quest for perfection, allied with such talent and class. It's fortunate. He spent eight seasons with me, and he never stopped developing himself. We could never imagine he would become the player he is right now. It hurts to see him wear another shirt when he is at top level.

He's not difficult to manage because he is an ultra-pro. He's at home every night. If you ring him at 10 in the evening, he will answer, because he will be watching some game or preparing himself for some match. With those roots, he is easy to work with. You can have different views to him and, because he has a strong character, he expresses himself like the Dutch usually do when talking about football. But it's pretty easy to discuss things with him because every movement, every gesture has to be done with perfection for him.

Now he's gone, don't ask the fans to understand what is not understandable. Even I do not understand, and I am deep at the heart of the decisions. You have to deal with it. That's life. We are here to help people to express their talents. A coach must have a positive influence on their players' lives.

I would have preferred Van Persie to sign for a club in a foreign country, in order to avoid playing against him several times per season, but it's a fine challenge for us to prove we can exist after such a move, to show we can score goals, play well and survive everything.

RVP and Wayne Rooney have everything to play together. Sometimes, great goalscorers don't really fit together. But if you analyse the pair's technical skills on the pitch, it can work. It will require some understanding, from the technical and from the personal point of view, but their separate success will increase the links between them. If those links exist and if they both score, it will be very, very strong.

Is it wrong that I respect Wenger/Arsenal so much more than other clubs and their managers?
For some reason I can't even "hate" them (apart from a short time after a game in which they beat us or something, but that's the case with every club), and I know in some people's opinions I should simply because we're rivals.
While I might despise Chelsea, City and Liverpool, I don't have that feeling with Arsenal, I generaly want to see them do well apart from facing us, and I've never been a particular fan of theirs at any point in my life, United was, is and always will be my team from the day I knew football till the day I die.

On a somewhat related note, do you guys think RvP would be at this level had he not been coached by Wenger who continously stuck by him through all the injuries and other setbacks?

The soft corner towards Arsenal started somewhere in between the time when they became a 4th place club/not genuine title contenders .

It wasn't the same 8 years ago.

I have never had much time for Arsenal, personally. But being a premier league also-ran seems to suit Wenger quite well, he is more likeable since being relieved of the pressure of contesting trophies. I guess you have to learn to be humble when you win feck all every year.

I actually have found myself stopped disliking Wenger as he seems very reflected, and when he does come at the press full guns blazing there is normally some truth to it. Brilliant manager and he has done a great job with Arsenal. Too bad Rodger's took over Liverpool as he seems likeable too, not like Dalglish...

ok, 8 years ago I was 11 and wasn't really that much "into" football as I am now (only watched games, and even then I wouldn't/couldn't watch every single game, etc.), so I'll give you that. if I was born several years earlier I might not be feeling the same way about them, but still.
It's not like Liverpool's a threat for the past few years yet I still can't stand them :)

Not really, I very much respect Wenger (he's still very much the 2nd best manager in the league in my opinion) and quite like him these days in fact. As far Arsenal, I don't mind them... there's no long standing rivalry there, nor are they a real title threat... so what is there to hate?

I agree with this. They have their faults (so does United of course) but Arsenal is a proper team with proper history and Wenger is the second best manager around for me.

Don't think it's in Wenger's nature to badmouth a player when they leave Arsenal. That's the job of the fans. :smirk:

He can be a myopic cnut but he is still a quality manager. Good to read what he really feels about RVP, instead of dwelling about the negatives.

Great quotes from AW.

It will be interesting to see how SAF tries to accommodate all 3 of Kagawa, Rooney and RvP into the side in big matches.

I guess it helps that all 3 are versatile/interchangeable - especially as any one of them can drift wide.

Seems to be more than that, though. He seems to hold him in a very different regard going by those quotes. Reminds me of whenever Fergie speaks about Ronaldo. It's very strange to hear Fergie talk about a player the way he does about Ronaldo.

Our strikers are RVP and Rooney, RVP and Rooney! Holy feckin shit.

With Kagawa here too this is the most quality in the side since 2009 easily.

All we need is a healthy backline and Fletcher and we can win anything we want.

The Manchester - Liverpool rivalry goes a bit beyond football, doesn't it? Also City, in the past was not a title contender, too.

Here's a little bit about Wenger vs Fergie:

Let's be honest, he moved to united for nights like tonight. I get a feeling we may see something special from him tonight

Don't get carried away, he's had much bigger nights than tonight in an Arsenal shirt.

All I mean is he has moved to play on this stage as he clearly thinks he has more chance of winning the CL with is than arsenal. The reason he moved here starts tonight
